Tampa Bay Lightning History
The Tampa Bay Lightning joined the league as an expansion team (along with the Ottawa Senators) in 1992, and earned their first berth in the Playoffs in the 1995-1996 season. The Bolts began to achieve consistent success in 2002-2003; the key ingredient was 1998 first-round draft pick Vincent Lecavalier, a center who went on to play 14 seasons for the Lightning and set almost every team scoring record.
After making the second round in the 2002-2003 Playoffs, the Bolts rocketed to the Stanley Cup Final the following season behind the league's scoring leader, Martin St. Louis, the goaltending of Nikolai Khabibulin, and the efforts of Lecavalier, Brad Richards, Fredrik Modin, Ruslan Fedotenko, Cory Stillman, and captain Dave Andreychuk. The Lightning defeated the Calgary Flames in a Stanley Cup Final that included four games decided by one goal, two of which came in overtime. Fedotenko scored both goals in the clinching 2-1 victory in Game 7.
The Lightning flirted with Playoff success the next two seasons, but struggled for three years after that. After bringing in Hall of Famer Steve Yzerman as general manager, the team returned to the Playoffs in 2010-2011, 2013-2014, and again the following season, when the Bolts — boasting the highest-scoring offense in the league — won 50 games, and the Eastern Conference title. They dispatched the Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, and New York Rangers in a hard-fought series en route to the Stanley Cup Final, where they ultimately lost to the Chicago Blackhawks in six games.
Powered by the scoring of Nikita Kucherov and Steven Stamkos, the Lightning contended again in 2015-2016, only to be turned away in the conference finals by the eventual winner of the Stanley Cup Championship, the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Lightning subsequently went on to win back-to-back titles, taking home the Stanley Cup Championship in 2020 and 2021, becoming the first-ever team to win two Stanley Cup Championships within one year. The Lightning appeared in the championship again in 2022, but lost to the Colorado Avalanche in Game 6.

Even My Tampa Bay lost..it was great game to watch and cheer for..!!! Go Lightning!!!!
I love ice-hockey anyway, but actually seeing an NHL game is the US was brilliant. The pace and skill of the players is quality. St Pete's is a welcoming enough venue. Prices are quite steep mind, so take enough money to break the bank. But it was totally worth it.
The game was awesome, the Lightning played a tough game and Smith stood on his head. The shootout was a plus, even though we lost. Club level is nicer than most peoples homes, with a bathroom outside almost every stairway and drinks right there. The Forum is definetly a great venue.
Awesome hockey game!!!!! Great game with lots of action. Sabres tied with 14secs to go in regulation then won in a Shoot Out.
Great game. Lightning fans disappointed with OT loss, but it was a good game. As a Sabre fan, of course I loved it!
The game and sthe show was prefect.. I was on the gasme last season and as game as the programm was much better..
As a tourist from the UK me and my wife thought we would take in a game to see why it is so popular. All we can say is wow, big shots and hard hits the action was intense and we loved it so much that we are getting tickets for the next game v buffalo sabres, it includes a 120 mile round trip but who cares. Let's go Lightning let's go!!
Second and last game here in SPT Forum and again an amazing moment : Lightning won 3-2 against his local rival Florida Panthers after being trailed 1-2 after 2 periods ! The crowd was awesome... 2 great moments in TB...
I took a group of children to the game. Purchasing tickets on-line is easy and convenient and I have done it in the past. Not being familiar with the St Pete Times Forum, I was unaware that the best tickets available would be the third level, section T. Needless to say, we were disappointed to be placed at the highest possible point in the stadium and look at many other empty seats in the third level. The game was excellent and we will probably do some more.....Maybe
The process from beginning to end was smooth. From finding the seats. We were accomodated well with a request of 8 seats within two rows. Seats were great. Game was great- first win is always a plus. We love to frequent the games and would definetly do this again.
It was an amazing night for my first game at St Pete's Times Forum... Lightning won 5-2 and the last three goals were scored just in front of my place (section 103)... Great crowd even if the Forum was not full...
Please, and I beg you, stop the thundersticks....this is not hockey by no means. In the day we use to clap our hands and cheer. These things are the death of hockey! Please stop!
One of the 10 best hockey games I have ever been to. Devils tie in last second of regulaton and win in a shoot out. FANTASTIC!
Zajac ties the game with fractions of a second left in the game and the DEVILS go on to win it in the shoot out after a scoreless OT!!!! One of the best live games I have ever been to and I have been to many.
Kudos to Tampa Bay for bringing thier stars. My 13 yr old son has been a rabbid Tampa fan for years. It's amazing the difference from the AHL to the NHL!
One of the best games I have ever been to!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Though a pre-season warm-up, the Lightning came out hot in the first and third periods, looking more like a step on the way to the Stanley cup. Two fights in the first 30 seconds of the game (and this was pre-season) showed this year's team has spunk. Forechecking, great defense on power plays, and an immaculate 2-on-goalie passing play to clinch the win--WOW!
