Portland Timbers History

The Portland Timbers joined MLS in 2009 and wasted little time in their mission to prove that The City of Roses was a proud soccer city. Under head coach Caleb Porter and Newcomer of the Year recipient Diego Valeri, the Timbers clinched the top spot in the Western Conference in 2013, earning their first-ever playoff berth. By 2015, the squad had notched their first MLS Cup victory over the Columbus Crew. Valeri would continue to play for the club until his retirement in 2022 after cementing himself as one of the biggest stars of MLS and earning the league's Most Valuable Player in 2017.

Led by head coach Giovanni Savarese, the Timbers topped the Western Conference for a second time in 2017 and followed the next year with a spot in the MLS Cup Final match against Atlanta United. The Timbers were ultimately defeated, but the match managed to set a then-record for league attendance with 73,019 fans checking in at Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Portland won the 2020 MLS is Back Tournament and made another run to the MLS Cup Finals in 2021, but fell to New York FC on the Timbers’ home pitch at Providence Park.

Portland Timbers at Providence Park

Built on one of the most historic grounds in American professional sports, Providence Park is located in the Goose Hollow neighborhood of Portland and is the oldest configured, soccer-specific stadium in the MLS, dating back in some form to 1893. The 25,218-seat facility has since undergone several renovations, in 2001 and 2019.

Providence Park currently hosts the Portland Timbers as well as the NWSL’s Portland Thorns. The pitch has also presided over matches for the MLS Cup, MLS All-Star Game, and two Women’s World Cups.

Great spot right in the middle. If you can't handle the sun I would not suggest this area, but we loved it.

    Obstructed View - Not Disclosed.

by SorryKid on 7/30/12JELD-WEN Field - Portland

Decided to take my son to the Timbers' game for his birthday. Selected "best available" at "any price" in searching for tickets. Section 119, Row - A, Seats 3-4 came up. Looked like good seats on the stadium map so I bought them. When I went to the game, I discovered that the view of the left side of the field was 50% obstructed by a guard rail. There was no disclosure when purchasing the tickets that it was an obstructed view. Very disappointed.

timbers were pathetic but great atmosphere

    by pdxrider12 on 7/30/12JELD-WEN Field - Portland

The play on the field was pathetic but the crowd kept us entertained.. but seriously it was like watching 12 yr old kids playing on the field. The price of the ticket is not justified

You can't go wrong with a Timbers game at Jeld Wen

by PDXGeek on 7/26/12JELD-WEN Field - Portland

The atmosphere at Jeld Wen Field is great. It's something you don't want to miss especially if you like soccer since there aren't very many venues in MLS with this type of fan base. Plus Tom Hanks even showed up.

    GA seating process was horrible

by Anonymous on 7/17/12JELD-WEN Field - Portland

It was my fist time experiencing a seat in GA at a MLS Timbers game. It was stressful to say the least. We heard that they made people who wanted to sit immediately behind the goal show up at an undesignated time to receive a wristband and then those 1000 people had to go back prior to the game to get in line again. What a hassle. That made us feel as though we needed to be there at 6:00 for a 8:00 game in order to sit in th the bleachers above the walkway. If there is such concern about seating in the GA section that a wristband process has to be implemented, seats should be reserved in GA as well. First come first served would still apply but during the purchasing process. The anxiety experienced leading up to the game will keep us away from future games unless we are able to purchase tickets for reserved seats.

    Terrible

    by t5cents on 7/16/12JELD-WEN Field - Portland

Our defense and keeper are terrible. It was like going to watch a kids tricycle race after having watched the Tour de France. Simply pathetic, but the crowd and the Galaxy didn't dissapoint. Now if only the current season ticket holders wouldn't renew so I could move up on the waiting list, I'd be stoked. RCTID!!!

    Timbers v Quakes

by Orphy on 7/5/12JELD-WEN Field - Portland

Truly amazing. I had been to a few minor league football (soccer) games before but was nothing like this. It made me think of the quote, "pomp and circumstance" since it was an event to behold, not even counting the game that was played. I just wish my wife could have been with me to witness the spectacle (she is, “In Country”). If you are a people watcher, or just enjoy a very exciting atmosphere, you must attend at least one game this year.

    Timbers Bounce Back

    by RCTID107 on 7/5/12JELD-WEN Field - Portland

It was a Timbers match. What more needs to be said? As a bonus they played well and beat the currently highest ranked team in the league. RCTID

    Timbers win at home!

    by JoeMama4 on 7/5/12JELD-WEN Field - Portland

Great seats, the pole in front of you blocked a minor portion of the field but it's not that bad considering some of the other seats in sec 211 where you can't see half of the field.

    Seats not sellable

    by 1timberfan on 7/5/12JELD-WEN Field - Portland

Section 211, row o, seats 11 and 12 are not "obstructed" view, they are "half field" view. you cannot even see the goal at the opposite end of the field. They should not be up for sale. very disappointed.

This was my first MLS game and we had a tremendous time. I would recommend arriving early to enjoy the atmosphere. Parking was close and we had an easy walk. Depending on where you sit you may need to explain a few expressions to young children.

    Fun game, but bad seats

    by MC82 on 6/26/12JELD-WEN Field - Portland

The game was great but I bought tickets as soon as they went on sale and a couple months later I get an email that they are obstructed view. But at that point all the other tickets are sold out. I bought them as a gift to a friend and was disappointed I had to tell her months after I had given them to her.

Too bad we didn't win the game!

by TAfan on 6/13/12JELD-WEN Field - Portland

The Timbers aren't as good as we hoped they'd be. I have four season tickets in the TA section, but bought these two because I thought having extras for this game would be a good idea. Well, I spent most of the game hanging out with my family down in the TA section or just walking around. Seats were way too far up in the nose bleed area just in front of the tarped off section.
