Calgary Flames History

The Flames originated in Atlanta, Georgia in 1972. After eight years, they relocated to Calgary in 1980, where they were greeted by a far more hockey-friendly fanbase. Thus began the Battle of Alberta, which refers to the ongoing rivalry between the Flames and the Edmonton Oilers to the north.

The Flames were vanguards in terms of bringing in foreign players, as Håkan Loob became one of the league's first European stars. Loob, Doug Gilmour, Joe Nieuwendyk, Mike Vernon, Lanny McDonald, and Al MacInnis were the stars behind the Flames' only Stanley Cup Championship in 1989, gaining a measure of payback against the Montreal Canadiens in six games. Montreal had defeated the Flames in the Stanley Cup Final three years earlier.

Despite a block on players from the USSR, the Flames had the foresight to draft Russian star Sergei Makarov in 1983. Makarov was among the first Russians to play in the NHL when he joined the Flames in 1989-1990.

Despite financial issues, the diminutive Theo Fleury and Jarome Iginla led the Flames throughout the '90s, bouncing in and out of the postseason with little long-term success until 2004, when the Flames made another run at the Cup, only to lose to the Tampa Bay Lightning in seven games. The Flames have made it to the Playoffs 25 times and have two Presidents' Trophies to their credit, along with seven division championships.

Calgary Flames at the Scotiabank Saddledome

Home to the Calgary Flames, the idea for the Scotiabank Saddledome was seeded when it became clear that two major events would be in need of a world-class arena — the bid for the 1988 Olympic Winter Games and the arrival of an NHL franchise. The Saddledome opened its doors on October 15, 1983. The arena became a star attraction during the 1988 Olympic Winter Games, hosting both the figure skating and hockey competitions. In the fall of 1994, the arena underwent renovations and one year later the new Scotiabank Saddledome was unveiled. The Calgary Flames celebrated their first season at the arena during their home opener for the 1995-1996 season. The arena can seat more than 19,000 guests and hosts 150 events per year.

    Calgary Flames - NHL

by luckyphil on 2/22/18Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

I attended two NHL matches at the Saddledome when I was in Calgary and it was a great experience. The atmosphere was excellent and my 9 year old son loved it as well. I would certainly recommend this for sports fans.

    Flames fans are awesome!

by hamsaus on 10/25/16Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

Originally from Saint Louis, we met up and decided to catch the STL Blues vs. the Calgary Flames. I can't even begin to describe what a positive experience we had. We went to our nosebleed seats, and a young man offered us seats in the lower bowl, about 15 rows back from the net. It was incredible! The concession food was good as well. The fans gave us friendly banter, the best kind, and we went home with a Blues victory! All in all, would do again. Thank you, Calgary!

    Not for kids

by MelanM on 11/25/15Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

Standing in one line for over 1.5hours to see 3players with kids and then to be told all the other line's for different players were closed before the players even got out to he table,it's a bit disappointing.Last year at COP was way better than at the Dome

    Awesome!

by jferland on 11/24/15Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

This experience is like no other, I've always wanted to meet the Flames and this time we got the opportunity. It was amazing. The only down side was that every line we tried to get into got cut off as soon as we got to it, there was too many people. Good thing we could just stand to the side and take pictures of them, and occasionally they would say hi. Overall great experience!

    Fans were a pain!

by Anonymous on 3/24/15Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

Not bad wish a better explanation of the seats I was getting had of been provided. My grandson and I were seated amongst a couple of teams of young unsupervised children. They were more interested in beating each other with the air batons staff handed out. then the game. I'll have to think long and hard before I attend another game!

    Great first time experience

    by Avril30 on 12/30/14Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

With the exception of people comming in 10 minutes late to try to find their seats and then trying to get us kicked out of our seats because they thought that we were in their seats, which we were not the experience was great. We were very far up and didn't have a lot of options of where we were to get food or drinks unless we wanted to walk 1500 stairs during intermission.
