Calgary Flames History

The Flames originated in Atlanta, Georgia in 1972. After eight years, they relocated to Calgary in 1980, where they were greeted by a far more hockey-friendly fanbase. Thus began the Battle of Alberta, which refers to the ongoing rivalry between the Flames and the Edmonton Oilers to the north.

The Flames were vanguards in terms of bringing in foreign players, as Håkan Loob became one of the league's first European stars. Loob, Doug Gilmour, Joe Nieuwendyk, Mike Vernon, Lanny McDonald, and Al MacInnis were the stars behind the Flames' only Stanley Cup Championship in 1989, gaining a measure of payback against the Montreal Canadiens in six games. Montreal had defeated the Flames in the Stanley Cup Final three years earlier.

Despite a block on players from the USSR, the Flames had the foresight to draft Russian star Sergei Makarov in 1983. Makarov was among the first Russians to play in the NHL when he joined the Flames in 1989-1990.

Despite financial issues, the diminutive Theo Fleury and Jarome Iginla led the Flames throughout the '90s, bouncing in and out of the postseason with little long-term success until 2004, when the Flames made another run at the Cup, only to lose to the Tampa Bay Lightning in seven games. The Flames have made it to the Playoffs 25 times and have two Presidents' Trophies to their credit, along with seven division championships.

Calgary Flames at the Scotiabank Saddledome

Home to the Calgary Flames, the idea for the Scotiabank Saddledome was seeded when it became clear that two major events would be in need of a world-class arena — the bid for the 1988 Olympic Winter Games and the arrival of an NHL franchise. The Saddledome opened its doors on October 15, 1983. The arena became a star attraction during the 1988 Olympic Winter Games, hosting both the figure skating and hockey competitions. In the fall of 1994, the arena underwent renovations and one year later the new Scotiabank Saddledome was unveiled. The Calgary Flames celebrated their first season at the arena during their home opener for the 1995-1996 season. The arena can seat more than 19,000 guests and hosts 150 events per year.

    Great stadium...

by Anonymous on 12/30/14Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

...if you're not sitting up in the press level. Most of those seats are probably ok, but ours were near center ice, which meant we had a metal guard rail blocking the view to parts of the rink. Oh and people were walking around during plays (?!), so at times the only way to see the rink was on the big screen. In other arenas sitting in the nosebleeds just means that the rink is far away, not that your view is actually blocked by guard rails and people walking/standing during plays in the aisle just below your seats. Really disappointing!

I had a great time, I enjoy watching the Calgary Flames. I took my uncle for his birthday and Robyn Regehr is my favourite NHL hockey player from the Calgary Flames. This was my particular reason for me to buy these tickets.

    Calgary Flames Better Than Blackhawks?

by Cmoneyswag on 10/4/13AMAZING - Cincinnati

The Calgary Flames are a great team and perform with zeal. They are a team that capitalizes on making an early advantage, and with defenders like Butler they can keep it for the whole game. However, they are lacking a good center. This isn't a problem anymore because they have a new player who is fitting that role and is a wonder to see on the ice. Overall, the games they play in will leave you on the edge of your seat and having short fingernails.

We were stuck in the WORST press level section(12 seats 4-6) with a bunch of people who were too drunk. The level was so bad that we were not showed at all, or no gifts were given in our area because of them. Instead of the security doing something about the group of people, 3-5 security guards all stood in front of us watching them the entire time. We had stuff thrown at us. They were commenting on 12 year olds going by and screaming swear words, and I had MY 8 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER with us!!! We couldnt SEE the game due to your staff, and my daughters birthday present was ruined by others. Thanks to your staff who didnt do something until 2 min left of the game! Will not be travelling 6 hours for that ever again!

    Red Wings rock the Saddledome!!

    by Mattrick14 on 2/2/12Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

A perfect venue for two great teams to showcase their talents. I've seen a lot of college hockey live, but this was my first pro game and I was blown away with the experience! Calgary was very accomodating and friendly despite us being Detroit fans. We were white jerseys in a sea of Red C's and came out with a win, and we never got mugged on the way to the car! haha. Overall, great experience and will be going again and would recommend to anyone interested in the sport.

    1st experience, Best experience

    by Squ33 on 10/11/11Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

The tickets delivered though e-mail was absolutely fantastic. The game itself was epic. Penguins beat the Flames 5-3 on opening day (Wife is a Penguins fan). Three fights broke out (on the ice), which were very entertaining. Even at PL seating, the action in the rink was still quite good. I will definitely be going again!

Great game for preseason! Too bad they lost or else would have made the event more fun.
