Calgary Flames History

The Flames originated in Atlanta, Georgia in 1972. After eight years, they relocated to Calgary in 1980, where they were greeted by a far more hockey-friendly fanbase. Thus began the Battle of Alberta, which refers to the ongoing rivalry between the Flames and the Edmonton Oilers to the north.

The Flames were vanguards in terms of bringing in foreign players, as Håkan Loob became one of the league's first European stars. Loob, Doug Gilmour, Joe Nieuwendyk, Mike Vernon, Lanny McDonald, and Al MacInnis were the stars behind the Flames' only Stanley Cup Championship in 1989, gaining a measure of payback against the Montreal Canadiens in six games. Montreal had defeated the Flames in the Stanley Cup Final three years earlier.

Despite a block on players from the USSR, the Flames had the foresight to draft Russian star Sergei Makarov in 1983. Makarov was among the first Russians to play in the NHL when he joined the Flames in 1989-1990.

Despite financial issues, the diminutive Theo Fleury and Jarome Iginla led the Flames throughout the '90s, bouncing in and out of the postseason with little long-term success until 2004, when the Flames made another run at the Cup, only to lose to the Tampa Bay Lightning in seven games. The Flames have made it to the Playoffs 25 times and have two Presidents' Trophies to their credit, along with seven division championships.

Calgary Flames at the Scotiabank Saddledome

Home to the Calgary Flames, the idea for the Scotiabank Saddledome was seeded when it became clear that two major events would be in need of a world-class arena — the bid for the 1988 Olympic Winter Games and the arrival of an NHL franchise. The Saddledome opened its doors on October 15, 1983. The arena became a star attraction during the 1988 Olympic Winter Games, hosting both the figure skating and hockey competitions. In the fall of 1994, the arena underwent renovations and one year later the new Scotiabank Saddledome was unveiled. The Calgary Flames celebrated their first season at the arena during their home opener for the 1995-1996 season. The arena can seat more than 19,000 guests and hosts 150 events per year.

Yah Baby - the Flames Won!

    by Rattler53 on 3/8/11Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

It was a great game to attend! The Flames started a bit slow but were in command for the 2nd & 3rd periods. Iginla's 30th goal scored on his penalty shot were the hilight of the evening. The Saddledome staff are always helpful and I like the Saddledome as a venue.

The event was awesome the seat were not worth the money. Someone like myself who doesn't know the venue like the saddledome and doesn't realize that seats row 3, 21 and 22 are directly behine the coaches and team bench should be made aware of the exact location of those seats. We hardly saw any of the game due to coaches and players standing up in front of us. Had to watch the game thru big screen most the time.

The energy of a stadium that is around 90% capacity is awesome. Probably one of the best hockey venues I have been to.

    Excellent Venue AWESOME sport!!!

by AirShark on 10/29/10Scotiabank Saddledome - Calgary

My Cousin and I flew up from San Jose to see our SJ Sharks play in Edmonton and Calgary. The fans in Calgary were great to us, the venue is beautiful! I've been to San Jose, Anaheim, Phoenix, North Carolina, and D.C. for NHL games. Calgary is the nicest facility of the list. The fireballs shooting out after a goal are just great. You need to try a pocket dawg. Afterward, we got to meet some of the Sharks players in the stands. GREAT TRIP!

    Flames vs Sens

by Katievjack on 3/14/10Pengrowth Saddledome - Calgary

It was late starting due to the wrong size of glass being available after it was broken in the warm-up. However it was a great game, good seats and the atmosphere was amazing.

    A bit of a yawn

by heinodewittoderwatt on 3/7/10Pengrowth Saddledome - Calgary

I'm a big Fan of the German and Switzerland Icehockeyleague and I was very pleased to lock an Hockeygame in Canada but what a disappointment. Not the fast game I know, bad temper @ the audience on the tiers... Never ever! Sorry

    Sad example of hockey

    by disgruntled22 on 1/9/10Pengrowth Saddledome - Calgary

Wow, the Flames did not come out to play. From players falling down all over the ice, always passing to the other team, never taking a shot, not keeping someone in front of the net, fanning over the puck to take shots, it was a sad event. Our key players (Jerome, Oli), need to stop trying to make a fancy play and just take the shot. Sometimes it is actually about trying to win the game! Its not that Columbus deserved to win, but that we certainly didn't.

    Flames games are fun!

by Katievjack on 12/30/09Pengrowth Saddledome - Calgary

I am an avid Flames fan, the seats we had for this game were excellant, Flames players gave my 6yr old son high 5's when going on and off the ice! Too bad they lost 5-1 against the Canucks! I wish the Flames had played a little better, but there was a fluke goal, that flew int he air and we could see Kipper looking for it! Go Flames Go!!!

    Great entertainment at the Saddledome

by BritishNHLFan on 12/20/09Pengrowth Saddledome - Calgary

We took our two kids to their first hockey game, the tickets were affordable, we were up in the top but still had a really good view and could see everything clearly. The game was good both kids were up cheering the flames on and we especially enjoyed the entertainment in the intervals, UK sport events could learn a lot from the great family atmosphere and the good entertainment.

    Flames lower bowl seats

by Katievjack on 11/22/09Pengrowth Saddledome - Calgary

I must say that apart from the 7-1 loss, the seats were awesome! I got to give the team high fives on their way off the ice, however I think that due to to loss they were not in the mood for this! If they had played a little better, these seats would have been the best I have ever sat in at the Dome!!!
