Calgary Flames History
The Flames originated in Atlanta, Georgia in 1972. After eight years, they relocated to Calgary in 1980, where they were greeted by a far more hockey-friendly fanbase. Thus began the Battle of Alberta, which refers to the ongoing rivalry between the Flames and the Edmonton Oilers to the north.
The Flames were vanguards in terms of bringing in foreign players, as Håkan Loob became one of the league's first European stars. Loob, Doug Gilmour, Joe Nieuwendyk, Mike Vernon, Lanny McDonald, and Al MacInnis were the stars behind the Flames' only Stanley Cup Championship in 1989, gaining a measure of payback against the Montreal Canadiens in six games. Montreal had defeated the Flames in the Stanley Cup Final three years earlier.
Despite a block on players from the USSR, the Flames had the foresight to draft Russian star Sergei Makarov in 1983. Makarov was among the first Russians to play in the NHL when he joined the Flames in 1989-1990.
Despite financial issues, the diminutive Theo Fleury and Jarome Iginla led the Flames throughout the '90s, bouncing in and out of the postseason with little long-term success until 2004, when the Flames made another run at the Cup, only to lose to the Tampa Bay Lightning in seven games. The Flames have made it to the Playoffs 25 times and have two Presidents' Trophies to their credit, along with seven division championships.

Calgary Flames at the Scotiabank Saddledome
Home to the Calgary Flames, the idea for the Scotiabank Saddledome was seeded when it became clear that two major events would be in need of a world-class arena — the bid for the 1988 Olympic Winter Games and the arrival of an NHL franchise. The Saddledome opened its doors on October 15, 1983. The arena became a star attraction during the 1988 Olympic Winter Games, hosting both the figure skating and hockey competitions. In the fall of 1994, the arena underwent renovations and one year later the new Scotiabank Saddledome was unveiled. The Calgary Flames celebrated their first season at the arena during their home opener for the 1995-1996 season. The arena can seat more than 19,000 guests and hosts 150 events per year.
The Calgary Flames’ 2023–24 regular season kicks off in October at home as the Flames face off against the Winnipeg Jets. The Flames take on Alberta rivals the Edmonton Oilers in the 2023 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton on October 29. The team plays their final game of the regular season at home against Pacific Division opponents the San Jose Sharks. Here’s a list of key games to keep an eye on:
Tickets for the 2023–24 regular season can be purchased on Ticketmaster, the Official Ticket Marketplace of the Calgary Flames.
The Flames have made three appearances in the Stanley Cup Final, and have won once (in 1989).

I wish that the red lot was bigger so I didn’t have to worry about getting tickets that sell out within 5 minutes.
Unreal! This was the most intense and emotional game I have ever been to! The crowd was loud and proud! Two days later I still have no voice from cheering! GFG!
First, the good: great atmosphere and excitement in support of the Calgary flames. Now, the less-good: It seemed like all the youth of Calgary who aren’t yet allowed in the bars were at the red lot - nothing wrong with that but definitely worth keeping in mind if you’re 30+. The beers were 10 bucks each. The food choices were very limited and had long lines. The security on the way in made us dump out the water from our bottles (and water for purchase was $3.50).
I have 3 tickets 🎫 available for sale, selling for a fair price, Pm me if you’re interested….Thanks (563) 296-5897
È great experience the other fans treated me with respect and had fun in a decent section of fans seating behind home net
I bought a jeraey from the fanitics store, and i will guarantee i will be back. Love the saddledome.
The seat I got was great. Had a full view of the entire ice surface.
No matter who we asked for directions, or where to go for our seats, everyone was helpful and informative. It was a great 9-5 game and experience. The only thing that wasn’t so great were how high up our seats were. You can’t tell how steep it is when ordering and you haven’t been there before. Having height issues I was willing to pay more to move and when I asked someone where I could go to get different seats, they accommodated us with lower seats at no charge. Next time, and there will be a next time, I will purchase seats lower. The higher seats are not for everyone. Thanks Calgary for the great and friendly experience!

Excellent game, as the Bruins won. Marchand didn't lick anybody! Line-up to Men's room after 1st period was brutal...almost pi$$ed myself. Sadly was located by stairway, so had to try and view game around a friggin' hand rail...but I digress! Got to drive 5 hrs one way to watch the game with my daughter, watch my favorite team beat The Lames in their own barn/saddle, so that's all that really matters! :)
I realize the Saddledome is out of date, but to have a thick railing blocking the view of the ice can be fixed pretty easily. Thinner material, plexiglass, or whatever can make those seats less obstructed. Then do something about the fair weather fans that walk right in front of you during game play and it might have been a better night.
Flames games are so much fun compared with many other NHL teams/arenas. We have such a fantastic fan base and people really come to celebrate and party!
Was east to download and use at the venue was totally efficient
My overal experience was good, seats were amazing and close to all the action. Only down fall was my team lost.
Everyone was really helpful an had some good seats. No problems gettin in.
We are Leaf fans but when we travel we love to take in other games around the country. After a season of The North, we feel we know the Flames more than other years. It was historic to see the first meeting with the Seattle Kraken! We took our great nephew Sean, a Calgarian and big Flames fan with us. He had a blast! It was the first time attending a game with COVID protocols.....and we were thankful for them, made us feel safe.. but we we were expecting a complicated entry. It wasn't! Well done! The great Canadian welcome to past captain Giordano made us proud. When TML captain Tavares played the first game at his previous team, the Islanders, they booed him. Disgusting. Thank you Calgary for your class. The night was fun, safe and we got our money's worth with overtime and a shoot out! The only downside was the final score, unfortunately. We look forward to another game, maybe next time with our Leafs! For now, Go Flames!
We had fun as a family, great entertainment. Prices on food was a little high I thought but they usually are at big stadiums. Fans in our section were great. Where my mom and sister was they had a drunk lady searing and spilling her drink. Thank goodness she did not spill on them. Thanks to Flames organizations for a great time Chad loved his gift.
There was a goalie fight. They ended the period early cause there was a full brawl. Enjoyed the Happy Hour prices and being in Saddledome.
I have never been on ice skates so I can’t begin to understand what they go through out there, but sometimes it sure looks easy! At home, I am always giving direction, advice, my opinion 😱 and go Flames go! I love my Flames and will always support them. But sometimes 😢 and mostly ❤️🏒🥅👏😁🔥🥰🔥❤️🔥 Go 🔥Flames 🔥 Go🔥
Great family friendly atmosphere. True hockey experience.
