ZZ Ward rocked...but...
by ClevelandBormah on 3/26/14House of Blues Chicago - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5Normally, I have nothing but positives to say about a ZZ Ward experience, and in this case, the show itself was amazing (as usual)! However, the pre-show meet and greet left a bit be desired (although it was not ZZ's fault). My daughter and I arrived at the HOB Chicago at 4:45pm for a 5:30 meet and greet (at $100 per ticket). The soundcheck took longer than expected, which if anyone knows the business, is not unusual. (However, I almost wonder if ZZ's people even knew the meet and greet was to take place BEFORE doors. Normally, these events are scheduled POST-concert.) In any event, doors were scheduled to open to the general public at 6:30. At 7:00, we were about half of the way through the meet and greet session when we heard the venue had opened the doors to the general public because thay felt they could no longer hold them. I was told they felt ZZ was taking too long, which considering the number of people that paid the extra to meet her, was not the case. However, I would have been OK with the venue opening the doors had they roped off a section covering the front of the stage, thus reserving that section for the meet and greet folks. We paid considerably more for our tickets than general admission did, and although we did get to meet ZZ, we were also entitled to early floor access so that we could all stand up against the stage for the show. Yet by the time we made it to the floor, there was no room near the stage. In fact, the floor was two-thirds full already. My daughter and I ended up wiggling our way to the far left side of the stage...but literally right in front of the speakers...and we were lucky because most of the meet and greet folks had to stand in the rear of the venue since the show was sold out. Even with earplugs that were given to us, it was uncomfortable at best. We made the most of it because we care about ZZ and appreciate her talents, but with no accomodations made or subsequent compensation offered by the venue, it left a bad taste in my mouth. ZZ...you were your incredibly wonderful self and tore it up on stage! HOB Chicago? You have a beautiful venue there, but you could have and should have handled things better.
