MOS DEF / YASIIN BEY IN CONCERT:

As one of hip hop's most revered lyricists, Mos Def never ceases to surprise and impress with his dexterous flow. On stage, he cuts a stylish figure, effortlessly displaying his wordsmithing skills, charismatic energy, and boundless positivity while paying tribute to cultural icons like Mohammed Ali. Whether performing with longtime collaborator Talib Kweli or rolling solo, Mos makes sure crowds are bumped, grinded, and fully educated in the "fundamental mathematics" of his intricate verses, laying it down as only he can on tracks like "Ms. Fat Booty" and "Body Rock." With a highly anticipated new album in the works, Mos will treat fans to another dose of cerebral hip hop on his 2014 tour dates.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Dante Terrell Smith, best known by his stage names Mos Def and Yasiin Bey, is a Brooklyn-born rapper, actor, and producer. His hip hop career began in the early '90s with local alt-rappers Da Bush Babees and De La Soul, with whom he collaborated before releasing his debut single "Universal Magnetic." In 1998, he teamed up with Talib Kweli to form the duo Black Star, whose debut LP is considered a contemporary classic and major influence over the "backpack rap" scene. As a solo artist, Mos Def has released four albums to critical and commercial acclaim, firmly establishing his reputation as one of the genre's most stylish lyricists. Reuniting with Talib Kweli for several highly anticipated Black Star shows in 2014, Mos has fans eagerly awaiting more as rumors of new material mount.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"This was a dreamy, uplifting, soul-satisfying, freaky, funky time well spent!"

"I've always wanted to see MOS DEF/Yasiin Bey in concert. He didn't disappoint... Great energy..!"

"Mos is 100% in the moment and his show was an intimate experience with a nearly sold out crowd of true Mos Def fans. Great ambiance, music, flow -- and who knew Mos could step and dance like he did."

    An American Treasure

by Yolee580 on 5/1/18Sony Hall - New York

Yasiin Bey is an American hero, period. Every hip hop fan should pay homage by seeing him perform at least once. He speaks from his Soul to yours. He is a man who loves his people and does all he can to heal us, give us clarity and remind us of our greatness. This was an incredible experience.

    Entertaining

by phleebbt on 12/27/16Apollo Theater - New York

I attended the show with my best friend, and we're both fans of Yasiin Bey. I liked this show, but I really didn't think it was one of his best performance/shows. I have seen him give a better show, with more of the fan favorites in mind. Also the show started almost an hour late, and ended short, not considering the lateness of the performance. If you are a fan go see the Yasiin Bey, but be open to the unexpected.

    Will Never Forget This Night

by thelight7 on 12/25/16Apollo Theater - New York

The music, the skills, the flow, the energy , Yasiin has not lost his power as many have said. Great performer , dancer and sense of humor. He ran through the crowd after the show and I was able to embrace him, pure spirit. I hope he choices to do more shows before retiring completely.

    First Half Okay...Second Half Trash

by Lyrical1NYC on 12/24/16Apollo Theater - New York

The only friends he brought out was Pharoah Monch and Slick Rick. We thought the show was ascending when he let Pharoah Monch do "Simon Says." Then he brought or Slick Rick for like 3 minutes and proceeded to try and convince us that we should be excited by his short appearance. Then he did some new stuff on his album which was extremely weird. The beats were very simplistic, one of which I felt I could have created off of my casio keyboard from when I was seven. I expected mos def to do hits from black star, miss fat booty, stuff from the rawkus records era, you know, his hits. I was sadly disappointed and would not recommend this to anyone. It felt like Mos Def was just trying to get a check. Save your money.

Fan of Mos def not Yasiin Bey

by Oas818 on 12/24/16Saban Theatre - Beverly Hills

Well I was very excited for this show, it was his final tour, plus he hadn't been out here for 5 yrs, plus it's in LA so I'm thinking it's gonna be amazing. Couldn't be more wrong. Yasiin seemed to be on one and he didn't perform any of his classic songs. He performed several from the Ecstatic but even then he didn't do "Quiet Dog Bite Hard" or "Life in Marvelous Times." Ima give him the benefit of the doubt and think he was just rusty but he better be back too....with Talib.

I would see him again and again. I wanted Kweli to come out, but even solo he is amazing. One of the best to ever do it!

    Disappointed

by Pariah314 on 12/16/16Saban Theatre - Beverly Hills

Mos Def now known as Yasiin Bey has always been one of my favorite MC's to listen to but this concert honestly was a huge let down. This was suppose to be his retirement tour and he didnt leave a good lasting impression. He only did three classic tracks! The crowd wanted to hear their favorite songs but he ignored the requests and was arrogant in his approach in his answers. Ive lost a little respect for him after this.

    Very disappointed, I left early.

by Billygoats89 on 12/16/16Saban Theatre - Beverly Hills

I'm a big Mos Def fan, my first time seeing him and was looking forward to watching him perform. After one hour, I was falling asleep. When he returned from Africa, it seemed like he wasn't the same. He came back as Yasiin. That's my bad, I was looking forward to Mos and not Yasiin. I'm still listening to my Mos Def tracks, much Love, but very disappointed on the show.

    What Happened?!

by Igotoshows on 12/16/16Saban Theatre - Beverly Hills

The show was terrible. It was really sad because I love Yasiin Bey's music. He seemed too high to be performing, he was mean to the crowd and he just didn't care to be there.

Yasiin Bey was a sad mess...

by ITYBTYBNY on 12/12/16Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

Reggie Watts = Fun, inspiring and entertaining! Yasiin Bey, aka Mos Def = a disappointment. Something was clearly VERY wrong. He came out super late, the hype men/DJ's were trying hard to cover, and when he finally came out, it was clear he was drunk/high beyond ability to perform. The crowd was restless and the energy in the room dropped quick, so we left before it got any uglier. My heart hurt for whatever happened that led to this night going down like this. Mos Def is a highly skilled artist, but we didn't get to see that on this night.

    YASIIN THE DREAM!!!

by OracleBey on 12/12/16Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

Catch Bey if you can! You will regret it if you miss him before he retires FOR GOOD. Great openers: Alia Sharrief with husband Ras Ceylon, Jallal, Reggie Watts & M1 of Dead Prez! The host, Chris Riggins was dope & Ankh Marketing always serves!

    Booooooooooooooo

by FkaMosDeffan on 12/12/16Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

Went to see Mos Def he was awful period. Acknowledged he was "lit" drunk high I don't know but he restarted his songs often and barely seemed to know the words. He was an hour late and the gentlemen hyping up the crowd before kept talking about real hip hop, if real hip hip is being late not performing with all your heart and generally torturing your fans is it any wonder hip hop has moved from the arena back to the club. Thankfully Mos said he is retiring so only a handful of fans will get taken by this last cash grab before he fades off into used record bin. On a positive great venue great staff and Reggie watts was a 10 wish he had been the headliner he was fantastic and I had no idea who he was. Beware if you go to see Mos on this "final tour" (he'll be back when the cash runs out 7 years tops before there is a blackstar reunion) he may have been your favorite and "woke" at one point but that was a decade + and many movies ago. Keep that memory sacred save your money and listen to his albums at home LOUD to remind yourself of what real hip hop once was

    Mos was drunk

by Anonymous on 12/12/16Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

Yasiin was too drunk to stay on beat and showed up a half hour late or more. Don't waste your money on him. See Reggie watts though.

Headliner was superlate. Lateness is expected, but I got bored. Almost left before he came. Ended up leaving early to catch the Bart. Since It started at 8 I expected it to be over before 12.

Nothing like the classic mos def if that's what you're expecting. The local act was more entertaining. People were leaving early.
