MOS DEF / YASIIN BEY IN CONCERT:

As one of hip hop's most revered lyricists, Mos Def never ceases to surprise and impress with his dexterous flow. On stage, he cuts a stylish figure, effortlessly displaying his wordsmithing skills, charismatic energy, and boundless positivity while paying tribute to cultural icons like Mohammed Ali. Whether performing with longtime collaborator Talib Kweli or rolling solo, Mos makes sure crowds are bumped, grinded, and fully educated in the "fundamental mathematics" of his intricate verses, laying it down as only he can on tracks like "Ms. Fat Booty" and "Body Rock." With a highly anticipated new album in the works, Mos will treat fans to another dose of cerebral hip hop on his 2014 tour dates.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Dante Terrell Smith, best known by his stage names Mos Def and Yasiin Bey, is a Brooklyn-born rapper, actor, and producer. His hip hop career began in the early '90s with local alt-rappers Da Bush Babees and De La Soul, with whom he collaborated before releasing his debut single "Universal Magnetic." In 1998, he teamed up with Talib Kweli to form the duo Black Star, whose debut LP is considered a contemporary classic and major influence over the "backpack rap" scene. As a solo artist, Mos Def has released four albums to critical and commercial acclaim, firmly establishing his reputation as one of the genre's most stylish lyricists. Reuniting with Talib Kweli for several highly anticipated Black Star shows in 2014, Mos has fans eagerly awaiting more as rumors of new material mount.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"This was a dreamy, uplifting, soul-satisfying, freaky, funky time well spent!"

"I've always wanted to see MOS DEF/Yasiin Bey in concert. He didn't disappoint... Great energy..!"

"Mos is 100% in the moment and his show was an intimate experience with a nearly sold out crowd of true Mos Def fans. Great ambiance, music, flow -- and who knew Mos could step and dance like he did."

  • I'm changed.

I'm changed. What a powerful show and what a phenomenal presence. Yasiin Bey is not merely a performer, he is a mystic who happens to love music and has enough compassion for people to share it with them. Blessed Gift.

  • Openers were the highlight of the night

    by LolaNosta on 11/4/19Greek Theatre-U.C. Berkeley - BerkeleyRating: 3 out of 5

Busta Rhymes was crazy fun- full set, kept it hype and tight the entire time. Eryka Badu was a total surprise- full band, light show, beautiful performance. These 2 made it 100% worth the trip . Mos Def/Yasiin Bey however .. I guess the past is the past. Leave Black on Both Sides where it belongs , on vinyl, in your fond memories for being 20 years younger , because watching him do a half-effort run through with garbage sound on a dark stage did nothing but make the crowd start filing out.

  • One of the best shows ever!

    by Rynwinter on 10/31/19Greek Theatre-U.C. Berkeley - BerkeleyRating: 5 out of 5

This is definitely going down in history as one of the best shows! Start to finish I was absolutely enthralled! I can’t wait to see all of the artists again!!!

  • Greek Theatre is a disappointing venue for hardcore fans

    by Priscilla G on 10/28/19Greek Theatre-U.C. Berkeley - BerkeleyRating: 1 out of 5

2 of the artists started there sets late and the venue's response was to cut their sets short by turning down their microphones mid-song and turning the lights off on the stage. I found this so disruptive, in particular to Yasin Bey. It was his anniversary tour for the iconic album Black on Both Sides, and I couldn't believe they cut his mic in the middle of UMI Says, which, ironically, is a song about living in the moment and being the best person you can be. Even after the set was stopped short, the crowd cheered so loud, but the technicians wouldn't so much as turn his mic back on so he could address the crowd and say goodbye.a I understand that the venue is on campus, but the experience was so disappointing. They should rethink how they handle late set times.

  • It was phenomenal!!!

    by JM on 10/28/19Greek Theatre-U.C. Berkeley - BerkeleyRating: 5 out of 5

Seeing all those legends on stage and performing their classics. The crowd was ecstatic although too much smoke. Overall though it was worth the 18 hour bus ride I took just to see this show!

  • Too packed and need better food options.

    by Jamie on 10/28/19Greek Theatre-U.C. Berkeley - BerkeleyRating: 3 out of 5

The venue was uncomfortably too packed which made it tough to use the restroom and get back to where you were. Food options were basic and terrible.

  • Amazing!

Everything you didn’t know you needed all wrapped into one ball of goodness to your soul!

  • Yasiin Bey

    by M. on 10/28/19Greek Theatre-U.C. Berkeley - BerkeleyRating: 2 out of 5

Frankly disappointing. Slick Rick and Busta Rhymes were the highlights. They took forever between artists and by the time Erika Badu came out we had lost our enthusiasm. I don’t know if they do that so people will buy more drinks between artists but it was very annoying. By the time Yasiin Bey came out we were exhausted from waiting around and left. Also Erika Badu mostly just sampled her own songs rather than actually singing them.

  • Show was DOPE, Venue was whack!

    by NiteOwl on 10/28/19Greek Theatre-U.C. Berkeley - BerkeleyRating: 3 out of 5

Show was fantastic, Souls, Slick Rick, Busta all hype as hell. Badu was hella on point, Mos Def comes out plays half....HALF of Black on Both Sides and the Greek Theater just CUTS THE SOUND AT 11PM sharp! No 2nd half of the show, no encore, not even a chance for Mos to chirp out with dignity... that gets the bozack, funk the Greek Theater, its not the artists fault, but it sucked, never going back...

  • Amazing show

  • My rating is for the venue only!

by Pissed off Erica Badu Fan on 10/28/19Greek Theatre-U.C. Berkeley - BerkeleyRating: 2 out of 5

I will NEVER go to the Greek Theater Again. They cut the mic off of Erica Badu and Yasiin Bey. So disrespectful. Other than that, sitting on that hard concrete for hours wasn’t the business either. I will def see the artists again but will never go back to this venue
