Several technical issues during concert.
by Ungh on 12/28/13State Theatre - PortlandRating: 2 out of 5There were two very annoying problems persistent thru the concert.
The first being that some of the stage lights were pointed directly into the audience's faces, thus blinding them to the performance happening on stage. A pre-concert check and adjustment were all that were needed, yet didn't happen.
The second major annoyance was the sound system, when the concert started a bank of speakers was humming loudly like one would get when you pump the volume loudly to a speaker but no audio. Throughout the concert the audio would drop and come back on blaring then drop again. Several of the stage microphones experienced several problems from unplugged cables to apparently being shut-off by the sound team.
As far as the actual band and the concert they produced, it is hard to tell how they actually sounded, the drums were overpowering thru several songs but I cannot speak to whether or not that was their sound of a butchering by the sound system.
The songs that sounded the best were the ones they wrote themselves, and I must say they did a good job on their own songs, the TSO songs ran the gamut from sounding like a professional band doing their own take on a TSO song to a horrible teenager garage band sound.
The narration was interesting, however the narrator had no emotional output during the narration which was most noticeable during the north seas storm narration, the sounds/lights are simulating a lightning storm at sea and the narrator stands there in an every-day voice telling us to hand-on.
Overall, I THINK they are a good band, but the lighting and sound issues were just overpowering to let me give a complete review of the band. Perhaps a new sound technician, or new gear, or the technicians arrive an extra hour earlier to make sure things are setup properly BEFORE the band hits the stage because it is details like this that make or break a concert.
