Winnipeg Jets History

The Winnipeg Jets were founded in 1997 as the Thrashers, and began play in the 1999–2000 NHL season, spending 11 seasons in Atlanta and making the playoffs once in 2006-2007. In 2011, the franchise was sold to True North Sports and Entertainment, which relocated the team to Winnipeg and adopted the name of the city's original franchise in the World Hockey Association, the Jets.

Major league hockey dates back to 1972 in Winnipeg, which was home to one of the founding franchises of the WHA and one of four (along with Quebec, Hartford and Edmonton) to join the NHL when the leagues merged in 1979. The original Jets moved to Phoenix in 1996 and became the Phoenix Coyotes (then the Arizona Coyotes, who were in play from 1994 to 2024). In the 14 seasons that the Jets have been in Winnipeg, they’ve made eight playoff appearances, including a run to the Western Conference Finals in 2018.

In 2016, the team established the Winnipeg Jets Hall of Fame, with the "Hot Line" trio of Anders Hedberg, Bobby Hull and Ulf Nilsson as the inaugural inductees. Recent inductees include Teemu Selänne and Teppo Numminen.

  • Skills Competition Did Not Disappoint

Great to see the fan appreciation by the players. Nate Schmidt seemed like the most genuinely happy player. It was amazing how engaging he was.

It was a great atmosphere mixed with home and away fans that joked friendly

by Aardvarkchili on 12/6/23Canada Life Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

Everything was great. I can't think of anything that would have made it better. I think this venue is an important part of Winnipeg and they provide top quality services and entertainment.

  • Oilers vs Jets

by JPE on 12/3/23Canada Life Centre - WinnipegRating: 4 out of 5

Great game, & great fan experience. Sub par food & drinks are far to expensive

  • Good game, great building.

by Ontario boy! on 11/21/23Canada Life Centre - WinnipegRating: 4 out of 5

The seats were great, the staff were professional, pleasant and approachable. The craft drinks were good, the domestic beer was hit and miss we had 2 that tasted horrible. Great overall experience, Clean facility easy to get around.

  • Great arena to watch the game but....

by Sen on 11/21/23Canada Life Centre - WinnipegRating: 2 out of 5

The game itself is exciting, however the amount of intoxicated people who are obnoxious is disappointing to those who avtually come to enjoy the hockey game. I dont understand why people come to the game only to get hammered and obnoxious or unruly.

by JB on 11/2/23Canada Life Centre - WinnipegRating: 4 out of 5

Music is far too loud and seemed to be all of one genre. Not good, if you are looking for a diverse ( age wise) crowd/fans. Pitched too much to the young and the young are not your strongest fan base in the arena at some, if not most of the seat prices. No harm in mixing it up. Hats off to one of your arena staff. Coming in I had not been able to put my tix in my wallet ( the Ticketmaster programme simply would not allow it?!!!) and the first person, female at the gate, was not helpful. However, another attentive young man spotted my challenge, came across to help and got,me on WiFi to locate the tix! I was impressed. And grateful. I appreciated the salute to Blake Wheeler. Expected even more given his contribution over the years and his dedication to the Jets brand, which I personally had the pleasure of experiencing.

  • Seats

by Shell on 10/22/23Canada Life Centre - WinnipegRating: 3 out of 5

You need bigger seats. The person next to me had to move up and blocked my view the whole time because her partner needed space. So my game wasn’t to enjoyable

  • Winnipeg Jets home opener

by Suz on 10/18/23Canada Life Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

The Winnipeg Jets arena is fantastic. Very easy to find your seats. Clean and bright. Jets fans are awesome, courteous and respectful. Best sports arena I have been too.

  • Accessibility

by Anonymous on 9/28/23Canada Life Centre - WinnipegRating: 3 out of 5

Accessibility of the area is pretty good! Although one down side to being a smaller arena is there is less wheelchair accessible seats, they are usually sold out or very limited to options, yet every time I have managed to go, there is ALWAYS able body people sitting in the accessible seating section, the last time I went there was a couple young 30’s sitting beside me then after the first period the went and sat closer to the bottom, it was just a waste of the accessible seating that someone with a real disability could have used! Also why am I only allowed 1 companion? people with disabilities have friends and like to enjoy the game with more then 1 person sometimes. there needs to be some kind change with accessible seating areas, thank you

  • Wpg whiteout is EPIC

by Sherbear on 4/25/23Canada Life Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

What a freaking rush standing among thousands of fans cheering our Jets on. Not the end we wanted, but the battle was incredible! No voice by the third and I still cheered with everything I had!

  • Absolutely amazing.

by Dar on 4/11/23Canada Life Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

I really enjoyed the game, it was so worth the 8hr drive to come see the Jets win 2-0. I will definitely come cheer them on again in the future. 🥅🏒 Halle is quite the goal tender. 🤗

  • Food is so expensive

by Kevman on 4/8/23Canada Life Centre - WinnipegRating: 3 out of 5

Loved everything about the experience except the food prices. It’s just too hard to enjoy the game without a good snack.

  • We hit a great game! Jets were on fire! Much needed W over D

by Sloop on 4/3/23Canada Life Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

My only complaint…. Your craft beer corner needs to support local breweries from Manitoba. Rotate the taps / support local!!

  • Jets vs Detroit review

by Clint on 4/3/23Canada Life Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

I thought the entire experience was perfect. The seats were awesome, friendly staff, the Jets won 6-2

  • First time at WPG JETS home arena.

by Rod on 3/21/23Canada Life Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

Great venue and atmosphere. My family and I were able to get lower bowl seating for 6 of us and it was awesome! We do not live in Winnipeg but are huge Jets fans. I will certainly return to Jets games at home any time I am in Winnipeg in the future as will my family.

  • Good game, horrible food

by CF on 3/20/23Canada Life Centre - WinnipegRating: 2 out of 5

Seats were fine, game was good, but our “Gourmet Burgers” were stone cold. Not just room temp, but actually cold. Seems like they are just warming up pre-cooked burgers, and not doing a great job of it.

  • Bruins @ Jets March 16, 2023

    by C. J. on 3/19/23Canada Life Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

This was my first time at a Jets game in Canada Life Center, I had a great time. Friendly staff, reasonably priced drinks and food. I'll be back and I may bring friends.

  • Game was boring.

Very disappointing game. Its like they were not there.
