Whoopi Goldberg on Tour
For all her achievements in theater, movies and television, Whoopi Goldberg has never lost her reverence for the connections she forges with audiences at her reliably outrageous stand-up performances.
Her appearance in November, 2019 at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City marked another milestone for a performer who first came to wider attention with Whoopi Goldberg, the one-woman stage show she brought to Broadway with the help of director Mike Nichols in 1984. The acclaim for her skills drew the notice of Steven Spielberg, who cast her in the lead role of The Color Purple. Goldberg's Academy Award nomination led to her successful run in a huge variety of dramas and comedies, including such smash hits as Ghost in 1990 and Sister Act two years later.
Her forays into television include her Emmy-winning run as executive producer and resident "center square" personality on her revival of the game show Hollywood Squares. Never afraid to share her views, Goldberg continues to elicit laughs and provoke thoughts as the moderator of ABC's The View.
In March of 2019, she appeared at New York's Beacon Theatre as cohost for Love Rocks NYC, the star-studded annual benefit for the nonprofit organization God's Love We Deliver.
Whoopi Goldberg Background
Born and raised in New York, Whoopi Goldberg caught the performing bug at an early age. Her first audiences were the relatives who gave Goldberg her distinctive nickname, comparing the aspiring comedian to a whoopee cushion.
Her years studying comedy and theater in California and New York led to the development of the characters who filled her first stage hit, which was named The Spook Show before she and director Mike Nichols brought it to Broadway as Whoopi Goldberg in 1984. In 1985, she earned an Academy Award nomination for her first major screen role, in Steven Spielberg's The Color Purple. That launched a movie career that has included such beloved films as Ghost, Sister Act and The Lion King.
Among her television credits are her groundbreaking talk show The Whoopi Goldberg Show and the Emmy-nominated NBC sitcom Whoopi. Her Emmy-winning revival of Hollywood Squares ran from 1998 to 2004. In 2007, she joined Barbara Walters on ABC's The View as the show's new moderator.
One of America's most decorated performers, Goldberg is among the few to win an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony. Her other honors include two Golden Globes, a Drama Desk Award, two American Comedy Awards, the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor and a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame.
My wife and I enjoyed the show. We wish it was longer.
My wife and I are avid Whoopie fans dating back to her early days. Unfortunately, with this performance she appeared very uninspired and has lost her cutting edge commentary on the political and sociological current affairs that she once made her comic fodder and held her audience laughing aloud. We didn't go to hear about her daughter having to take marihuana candy to survive a bad airline flight nor her confessions of being addicted to the weed and reminiscing about her early encounters with feminine napkins for thirty minutes. She bored the audience which began to leave on droves before the show ended. We will always love Whoopie but maybe she should stick to hosting The View. Got the impression she came to collect a fat paycheck and wanted to gamble in the casino instead of providing her once famous ribald performance.
She was super funny but her performance started at 8.25 ended at 9.25 and for the last 15 minutes of her show she took questions from the audiance which NO ONE could hear the questions so the answers made no sense..I just felt a little cheated...45 minutes was not enough of such a funny woman..I wanted more at least 1.5 hour show for the money...come on...
I was so looking forward to a big laugh! The material she brought was ok and I thought she was funny but it was only one hour and then she went to a "Q & A" at the end. Really? It seemed as though she was unprepared......had not written enough material to sustain a stand-up engagement. She is a multi-award winning comedic actress. I expected much more. Somewhat disappointing......
I have loved Whoopi for years. I have seen her standup on HBO so I already know "this wasn't the f****** View" as she announced in the very beginning. That was fine. Her material was funny; I got some good laughs. I would have preferred she do more of the political humor. This election season has plenty of material, but she blew right through it. Also, why remove the monitors? That may not have been her call, but it made it difficult for us in the back to see. The biggest problem was the question and answer period. It look up the last 20, 25 minutes of the less than 1 and a half hour show. The problem was we couldn't hear the questions. I was seated in section 203 and I couldn't hear anything. It would have made sense for her to repeat the questions. She did a few times, but overall we were clueless if we couldn't figure out the question based on her answer. People actually began leaving in droves during that time because they were frustrated. They were saying the show was a let down etc. Also, if I wanted to ask a question, I was too far away to be heard anyway. I still love Whoopi, but the show would be better if these problems were figured out.
It was not funny. She did not prepare. She was in and out in less than 75 minutes. A good 20% of the people left before the show was over.
Whoopi Goldberg was very funny. I would definitely recommend her. Be aware that the show is not the View!!!!
I loved the show! Whoopi is as funny as ever. Her topics were things we could all relate to. I really liked the unique twist of taking questions at the end of the show.
Whoopi, was only a little funny, I think she was tried from some of her, other engagements. I still love her. I was not really happy with the show. I invited my friends , they laughed. I have been a fan of Whoop's, all my life ( I am 51yr. old) I expected more. I don't think I would like to see her in stand up again. Movies or the VIEW Oh yeah.
Woopi was at her best. She warm the audience with her humor and kept them laughing The whole time. Her jokes were every day like events. She also engaged the people with question and answers. I loved it.and will go back to see her again
very good the giril keep it on the real side.i will go to see her when she return.
The artist was marvelous, but The Venue was not. I found the operation staff to be disorganized, unruly, uninformative, and unfriendly. Advice to staff: Will Call does mean that the customer has ordered and paid for their tickets online. Therefore, the paid customer should have the right to stand in this line to retrieve their tickets without question. I will not return for a visit to the Venue -- it was one of the worst experiences I have ever had. Advice to Whoopi and TicketMaster: Please reconsider any future engagements at this location -- they really need to get their business together first!
Phenomenal one woman show which was relatable to all adult levels. Whoopi interacted with the audience by setting up mikes on the floor level seating and answered questions. The extra wide monitors allowed patrons sitting in the mezzanine and balcony seats to see very well. She is a kind, smart, very talented person and genuinely seemed to be very gracious when answering questions. I would come to her show again. How about coming to the Holiday Star Theatre in Merrillville, IN Whoopi?
A good show to watch and enjoy. Even though the language could be a little foul the overall show was enjoyable and some funny moments
It was a blast. She had something intersting and funny for everyone.
Whoppi was great have been a fan for years, enjoyed her candor. She was so comfortable with the audience.
Whoopi is one of the greatest, sincerest entertainers in the industry. She has had to endure so many things over the years and although we (people) have a short memory, I know she has had to develop a deep heart. I wish her continued good health, long life and much happiness.
whoopi was simple funnnny. didn't expect such down to earth harlarity.
It was great including the question/answer section at the end of the show!! I appreciated how you answered every question!! You are better than my psychology professor...
I was very disappointed that she only spoke for about an hour. She then took questions from the audience, which I thought was inappropriate. I was under the impression that the show was in honor of Black History month. She did not mention anything about Black history and appeared to not have enough material to provide a comedy show. She constantly referred to a book for topics.
