About

More than fifty years ago, a show about New York City changed musical theatre forever. Now, it's come home to make history once again.

From the first notes to the final breath, West Side Story is one of the most memorable musicals and greatest love stories of all time. Arthur Laurents' book remains as powerful, poignant and timely as ever. The score by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim — a collection of standards that includes "Tonight," "America," "Maria," "I Feel Pretty" and "Somewhere" — is widely regarded as one of the best ever written. And the extraordinary, Tony-winning choreography by Jerome Robbins completely changed the language of Broadway dance.

This groundbreaking new production, directed by the legendary Arthur Laurents, offers a bold new design that builds on the show's raw power and emotion to create a fresh experience unlike any that came before it. Don't miss this thrilling presentation of a matchless work of art.

    Very enjoyable!

by AngelofGodMom on 8/24/09Palace Theatre New York - New York

We very much enjoyed the show. Stand-in for Tony had a great voice! Don't think the addition of dialog and songs in Spanish added anything - kind of gimmicky, but everyone knows the plot already so it wasn't a big deal. Must mention that seats at this theater are comfortably sized. My husband is chubby and brother-in-law is quite tall and they were both comfortable.

West Side Story is a "must see."

by Kristin825 on 8/24/09Palace Theatre New York - New York

This is a beautiful re-staging of West Side Story. The inclusion of Spanish-language versions of songs sung by the Puerto Rican characters added a wonderful new dimension to the story. Maria is beautiful and has an amazing voice; Anita is incredible and completely deserving of the Tony award that she won for this role. The choreography is a faithful rendition of Jerome Robbins' original, intricate, wonderful choreography. I was in tears for most of the second act - which, for me, is a really good indication that they got this right.

    Great production

by RRG53 on 8/24/09Palace Theatre New York - New York

Excellent production of a revival; the lead female had a beautiful voice. Understudy lead male was also very good. The choreography was well done and the theater was small and there wasn't a bad seat in the house.

A nice walk down memory lane

by Smiley54 on 8/24/09Palace Theatre New York - New York

OMG....it made me laugh, it made me cry and I could not stop from singing along. It was wonderful! The performers were all top notch but, my favorite performers were the two young ladies who played Maria and Anita. Maria's voice drew me in and kept me there until her last note. Anita....OMG....Rita Moreno should be proud. She captured Rita's moves, body language and her ATTITUDE. FANTASTIC. Would love to see it again.

West Side Story not worth the trip to the theater

by KisDisappointed on 8/24/09Palace Theatre New York - New York

Terribbly disappointed,,,took an icon of a show and tried to put a up to date twist....didn't work for me. Casting, costumes, and scenery could have been so much better...could not get the actual feeling of the time and story in this remake...save your money!

    Great show

by boopboopboop on 8/24/09Palace Theatre New York - New York

A classic production of West Side Story... all the songs done true to the original. The two actors playing Tony and Maria were terrific and set the tone for the whole show. Orchestra was also phenomenal. Great seats as well, we were in rear mezzanine five rows from the back, but overhang not a problem, you could still see the whole stage. Highly recommend.

West Side Story - A must see!

by EABELCHER on 8/23/09Palace Theatre New York - New York

This play is absolutely a "must see" for anyone visiting NYC. We all know the story as seen on the big screen starring Natalie Wood and Rita Morena. The play follows the storyline and keeps true to the choreography of master genius: Jerome Robbins. Matt Hydzik will make you swoon as Tony. Karen Olivo started this Broadway role of Anita and she alone can carry this cast. Maria, as protrayed by Josefina Scagline, will melt your heart with her pure operatic voice and sweet innocent looks. The songs and dance are timeless classics and will have your surely singing a few tunes as you leave the theatre.

    Good performance.

by luvshows on 8/23/09Palace Theatre New York - New York

West Side Story was a good show and worth the price. We were 4 rows back from the stage (isle D) on far stage right - Great seats. The voices and dancing were fantastic. There were a few slow parts, but overall was very good. Many parts were performed in spanish - including "I feel pretty". Contextually this was good, but if you don't know spanish you may miss some of the dialog. Overall we had a very good time.

West Side Story a lovely production

by JLev8 on 8/23/09Palace Theatre New York - New York

My 10 year old son asked to see West Side Story and I agreed. I am glad we did. It was a lovely production; the dancing was incredible and we really enjoyed the the bi-lingual nature of the show. Josefina Scaglione, the young woman who plays Maria is very very good and has a beautiful voice. Karen Olivo, the woman who won the Tony for her performance as Anita, is fabulous .

West Side Story was very good.

by richestman on 8/23/09Palace Theatre New York - New York

I thoroughly enjoyed the show, especially the singing of Tony, Maria and Anita. The songs "American", "Somewhere" and "Maria" were extremely touching. The change of scenes was almost seemless. There was not anything that I particularly disliked.

    Teens Will Enjoy This

by Teatra on 8/23/09Palace Theatre New York - New York

I do not recommend others watch the play if they have already seen the original film. It was disappointing to watch the amateurish acting. The best part was the orchestra music and the love story will surely be enjoyed by teens.

    West Side Story was fantastique

by rockawaymusicman on 8/23/09Palace Theatre New York - New York

We saw West Side Story on Sat. Aug. 22. From the moment the show started, we were enthralled. There were many new and unusual interpretations to this music. The first was the opening scene with the Jets. The pauses in the music helped to stir up anticipation for what was to follow. The entire cast was great. Maria's voice was phenomenal. Tony was also superb. Their blending was great. The dancers were a thrill to watch and wonder how the kept their energy up throughout the performance. Bernardo and Anita really were great. I enjoyed hearing their parts go from Spanish to English and back. It gave the show a more realistic flavor. I would and have recommended this show to many people.

Westside Story was more than I expected!

by Zagat on 8/23/09Palace Theatre New York - New York

We used our Ticketmaster gift card given by our children to buy tickets to see Westside Story. This was the best gift ever! We were totally pleased and amazed at the dancing and the singing by these young performers! We have seen the original movie and were excited to see this Broadway production, especially with the Spanish conversations and songs. How truly brillant to infuse the Spanish culture and language into where it should be! Highly recommended ! Roe

    West Side Story was delightful.

by bookworm1 on 8/23/09Palace Theatre New York - New York

West Side Story was delightful. I saw the original version years ago and this took me back in time, and, it was just as enjoyable now as it was then. The production, scenery, as well as the actors were marvelous. The story, of course, is timeless. It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening and we were sorry when it ended. As a matter of fact, we would not mind seeing it again in the future. We would recommend this to our friends.

by ELEL on 8/23/09Palace Theatre New York - New York

Maria, Anita, and Standy Tony were amazing. Would have liked I feel pretty and Find another boy to be partly in English. More English with Maria and friends. Music is beautiful.

Matthew Hydzik Gave Brilliant Performace as Tony!

by ProudGryfindor on 8/23/09Palace Theatre New York - New York

I have always loved the moveie West Side Story so I was very excited to hera it was comign back to Broadway. I was escatic to leran that a very talented young man (Matthew Hydzik) who I was lucky enough to meet while he was a member of the cast of Grease on Broadway would be joing the cast as the standby for the role of Tony. On Friday September 21st Matthew Hydzik stepped in as Tony while Matt Cavanaugh is on vacation and will be in the starring rol until September 2nd. I may be biased slightly but I am not the only one who has said that Hydzik is far more talented and better in the role than Cavanaugh. His perfomance is nothing short of brilliant and if you can get out to see the show while Hydzik is in it I highly reccomend it.

Very good but a little disappointed

by Jammo on 8/23/09Palace Theatre New York - New York

Overall and excellant performance. But being a traditonalist and looking foward to hearing our favorite songs (ie I feel pretty, etc) It was disappointing that some of these were done entirely in Spainish. I feel badly for those seeing it for the first time who do not understand Spainish and could not appreciate these classic songs. Otherwise an excellant performance by all.

My mother has always been a fan of the movie West Side Story, so when it came out on Broadway I knew I would take her to see it on her birthday. She absolutely enjoyed it. The singing and dancing was great and would recommend for all to see.

    West Side Story was terrific!

by LAcritic on 8/22/09Palace Theatre New York - New York

I really enjoyed the show and even in this recession, it was worth every penny. The ladies who play Maria and Anita stole the show. Bernardo was good too.The only slight downer was Tony...there was something over the top about his acting (maybe he was trying too hard to do a NY accent) that just didn't work. With a better Tony, this show would get 5 stars.
