About

More than fifty years ago, a show about New York City changed musical theatre forever. Now, it's come home to make history once again.

From the first notes to the final breath, West Side Story is one of the most memorable musicals and greatest love stories of all time. Arthur Laurents' book remains as powerful, poignant and timely as ever. The score by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim — a collection of standards that includes "Tonight," "America," "Maria," "I Feel Pretty" and "Somewhere" — is widely regarded as one of the best ever written. And the extraordinary, Tony-winning choreography by Jerome Robbins completely changed the language of Broadway dance.

This groundbreaking new production, directed by the legendary Arthur Laurents, offers a bold new design that builds on the show's raw power and emotion to create a fresh experience unlike any that came before it. Don't miss this thrilling presentation of a matchless work of art.

West Side Story beats the old movie version!

by rd220 on 8/20/09Palace Theatre New York - New York

Since I loved the movie version of West SIde Story I wasn't sure what to expect from this new "revival". Accolades to all involved in this production. The show grabbed me from the opening act with phenomenal dancing to the amazing voices of especially Anita and Maria. The Spanish parts added to the authenticity of the time period. I was impressed by the costumes and blown away by some of the scenery. This new version of West Side Story should have won more Tony's!

The Story on the West Side better than ever

by jackbob1129 on 8/20/09Palace Theatre New York - New York

As a theatergoer for forty years, few Broadway shows amaze me. I saw West Side Story at the Palace yesterday and this one was in the minority. The choreography, dancing, singing, set design, lighing and new Spanish dialogue and lyrics were all incredible. When you see a set, the rumble under the bridge, receive applause, you know this show is something very special. The Spanish words and lyrics made the play much more realistic for me. I'll close this critique by telling you about the voice of an angel. Not only is the 21 year old opera singer who plays Maria brilliant in her acting ability, her voice is absolutely ASTONISHING. She hits notes that few are able to reach and the emotions behind the voice are perfect. Don't think twice, just go see a show better than the movie, better than any of its other revivals and even better than the original,

    Fantastic!!

by JLGADL on 8/20/09Palace Theatre New York - New York

Because I know the film so well, I wasn't sure that the play could live up to all my fond memories. Was I wrong! The choreography was amazing. I love Richard Beymer and Natalie Wood- how can anyone replace them? Happy to say that the 2 leads in this play were absolutely fantastic. The few scenes in Spanish made sense and one could get the idea of what was being said. I say this as a person who speaks no Spanish. Even though I know the ending to the story, I was very moved at how this play ended. I highly reccomend West Side Story.

by Ofira on 8/20/09Palace Theatre New York - New York

We enjoyed the show from the moment it started till the end. It is a professional and Amazing show, even much better than the one I remember from my twenties! I would warmly recommend the show to all ages - twenties and up - I could see how my daughter (23) was enthusiastic.

    Amazing show

by Di1936 on 8/20/09Palace Theatre New York - New York

Excellent show. Choreography an improvement over the original. The singing was done with enthusiasm and talent. The addition of Spanish actually interfered with my personal enjoyment of the show. The first act at 90 minutes seemed too long. There was a natural spot to pause for intermission prior to when they did. It really is hard to sit for that long.

    Beautifully done West Side Story

by beckydan on 8/20/09Palace Theatre New York - New York

A great young cast, full of talent. "Baby John" was my favorite dancer to watch, amazing lines & extension. Anita is super as is Tony, but "Maria" steals the show. What an amazing talent this young lady is. She's beautiful, can dance, is a wonderful actress & has a voice that will amaze you!! Can't get over that voice. Bravo!

    Forgettable....the movie was better!

by Buick1972 on 8/20/09Palace Theatre New York - New York

My wife and I found this play ok.....our major criticism is the fact that there were too many scenes that were done totally in spanish (especially during the 2nd act). At least the movie had english sub-titles!

    West Side Story disappointing

by lisadnj on 8/20/09Palace Theatre New York - New York

Maria was amazing, her voice, her conviction and credibility. Tony (Matt Cavenaugh) was horrible, like I want my money back horrible. Not only could he not sing, (he was nasaly, conservative, didn't attempt any full blown notes) but he had absolutely no stage presence when he sang. I truly think the show would be soooo much better with a better Tony. I was disappointed that my two favorite songs were sung in Spanish. Also, that my other favorite song was taken on a delusional ride (somewhere). Overall I thought it was just ok. Even my 10 year old son thought the movie was so much better.

    No Habla Classico

by Skywriter on 8/19/09Palace Theatre New York - New York

Never mess with a classic. West Side Story stands among the giants of contemporary theatre with its timeless tale of love against the odds. The dynamic choreography and creative set designs of the current revival are greatly diminished by the gimmicky on/off use of Spanish during many of the Sharks' scenes. The momentum is lost when, try as the actors may to communicate the passionate story, even experienced theatregoers lose the meaning of critical moments, such as Anita's admonition to Maria to "...stick to your own kind." We are lost in the reverse translation as people throughout the theatre lean into each other, asking "What the hell is happening here?" Staging miscues also detracted from key moments. The imaginative, perfect world dance sequence of "A Place for Us" becomes almost comical when the director, in the throes of a "Billy Elliot" moment, has a red-haired lad open the song and lead Tony and Maria around the stage, while visions of reconciling Sharks and Jets dance in his little ginger head. Bizarre. The show closes prematurely on what should be a powerful, traditional ending of Jets and Sharks carrying Tony's body offstage. Instead, the director simply dropped the curtain on a crying Maria kneeling by a dead Tony, leaving the audience with a truly hopeless, rather than a hopeful feeling. Very un-Obama-esque. Hmmm. Maybe the director did us a favor. I'm sure that red-haired kid was waiting in the wings.

    good but not great

great music and dancing but casting was lacking - particularly the male leads. The 2 female leads were excellent.

    West Side Story

by freckledplatypus on 8/19/09Palace Theatre New York - New York

Fantastic music, lighting, costumes and dancing!! A few very touching moments where I got goosebumps. Unfortunately, the fellow playing Tony, Matt Cavanaugh, dropped the ball. He underplayed the first half of the show with a small quivery vibrato and missed all big moments to make a connection with his castmates and the audience. Sometimes he was disturbingly nasal and his interpretation was just off. Maybe trying to be creative and do something new each night but this interpretation was just wrong besides the fact that there was no chemistry between him and Maria. Not sure the Spanish speaking parts were helpful to the performance and maybe just a politically correct tribute to the Hispanic community- the songs weren't written for the Spanish words and seemed to lose their impact. Several of the Jets looked alike and wore the same clothes and from our nosebleed seats- hard to recognize. Anita and Maria were superb although Maria underplayed her sweet coloratura a few times, perhaps to accommodate the lackluster Tony. Overall: Fantastic! ( if you can ignore Tony and wishing he was killed off earlier in the performance :-P)

    Westside Story was heart warming!

by Veelop on 8/19/09Palace Theatre New York - New York

Although I've watched the movie a dozen times, this was the first time I ever saw it as a play. The singing and acting brought me to tears. The main characters made me fall in love with the play's version. And singing and speaking in spanish added realism! For some, you might need to bring a translator if you don't know the story line. But, I would highly recommend the play for anyone to see!

    Lots of fun

by hkim0036 on 8/19/09Palace Theatre New York - New York

I watched this for school, but I would definitely go watch it again on my own. I went by myself, so I was worried that it would be a boring experience, but the musical was so much fun. Funny and intense, thought-provoking and lots of great dancing.

    Entertaining

by michellesmellsx on 8/19/09Palace Theatre New York - New York

The play in itself was wonderful. I really enjoyed it. The thing that disappointed me (and most of the audience, I'm sure), was that there was a lot of Spanish spoken, and even two of the best songs were sung in Spanish. If you don't mind that, it's a great play to see!
