Washington Capitals History

The Capitals were founded in 1974, but did not post a winning record or reach the Playoffs until the 1982-1983 season, when a group led by top scorers Dennis Maruk and Mike Gartner, along with defenseman Rod Langway, ended the frustration. It began a remarkable streak of 14 consecutive seasons in the Playoffs.

After that streak ended in 1996-1997, the Capitals bounced back the next year to win their first conference title. Led by right wing Peter Bondra and goalie Olaf Kölzig, they defeated Boston, Ottawa and Buffalo in the Playoffs to earn their first berth in the Stanley Cup Final. But the Caps were swept in four games.

Alexander Ovechkin arrived in 2005, and since 2007-2008, the Capitals have reached the Playoffs almost every year. The 2014-2015 season began a run of three consecutive years that the Capitals reached the second round, only to lose in heartbreaking fashion. In 2015-2016, they won a franchise-high and NHL-best 56 games only to be felled by Pittsburgh, all the losses coming by one goal. They won a league-best 55 games the next year, but again lost to the Penguins in the second round.

The Capitals would go on to win their first Stanley Cup Championship in franchise history in 2018 when they beat the Vegas Golden Knights. Ovechkin currently ranks second in most career goals scored with 822 and continues to chase Wayne Gretzky's career mark of 894. Along with Gartner and Langway, Yvon Labre and Dale Hunter have had their numbers retired.

    Washington Capitals Rock!

by PattiOC on 11/8/09Verizon Center - Washington

Despite the injuries to major players...the Washington Capitals managed a huge win! We had a blast cheering on our team.

    Disappointing Caps

by Shocka on 11/2/09Verizon Center - Washington

What started out as an unforgettable night, turned into major disappointment with a loss in overtime. How sad. The constant music and noise almost made me deaf. The price of tickets and food/drinks are outrageous. I would go again, if the prices were not so steep. To all who want to see them, save up your money, eat and drink a lot well beforehand, take earplugs, and be prepared for a disappointing loss.

    Awesome

by Respen on 10/28/09Verizon Center - Washington

Best Game ive seen live in a couple years. Caps really know how to thrill a fan and to see us beating up on a dirty playing team like the Flyers is just icing on the puck!

    Hockey for the family

by ExpatriatedSkinsFan on 10/28/09Verizon Center - Washington

NHL Hockey is far better than the NFL for the family. I can't take my 9 year old to an NFL game due to the profanity, drinking and general bad behavior. I had none of these problems with hockey. The experience is night and day. I only wish the tickets were a little less expensive. Verizon Center is great. Easy Metro access.

Suprised Flyers are still in the NHL.

by AntiFlyerFan on 10/28/09Verizon Center - Washington

Caps behind a 2 goal night from Ovie put the Flyers in their place.

The tickets were bought on the first day that they were on general sale and they were barely in the building. The Caps are always a great show and the game was exciting, but $60 to sit in the rafters is excessive.

    An Awesome Game

    by kswenson57 on 10/28/09Verizon Center - Washington

One of the hardest hitting games I have seen. Theodore had a great game, especially the blocked penalty shot. The Flyers play dirty...saw a lot of cheap shots including a few blows to heads. Only negative...seating is too tight for a 6'3" guy.

    Ovie is magic

    by pamu5 on 10/19/09Verizon Center - Washington

Ovechin is so fast on the ice and it really can't be appreciated on tv. Whenever he touches the puck, magic is about to happen.

    Capitals are a good team!

by KimJensen on 10/16/09Verizon Center - Washington

The hockey is good, but the spektators are so in the way all the time they stand upp as it like now one sitting behind them and when the game started mabee 50 % of all hade get to the arena then they floated in under like two periods. Its a bad when they now have the best player in the world on the ice!

    Great Game until the Shootout

    by Weisse66 on 10/14/09Verizon Center - Washington

Was a great game, until we lost the shootout, loud, with lots of red present. I was surprised to see an entire section in the Club Level completely or almost empty. But it was Monday night. My next game is Friday, the 17th, hopefully the Caps will come out of that one with a win. Good Luck Caps.

    WONDERFUL GAME

    by butuhyknow19 on 10/13/09Verizon Center - Washington

This was a tremendously spectacular game, with OT, a shootout, and spectacular saves by both goaltenders. However, being a Devils fan, I enjoyed it all the more.
