Washington Capitals History

The Capitals were founded in 1974, but did not post a winning record or reach the Playoffs until the 1982-1983 season, when a group led by top scorers Dennis Maruk and Mike Gartner, along with defenseman Rod Langway, ended the frustration. It began a remarkable streak of 14 consecutive seasons in the Playoffs.

After that streak ended in 1996-1997, the Capitals bounced back the next year to win their first conference title. Led by right wing Peter Bondra and goalie Olaf Kölzig, they defeated Boston, Ottawa and Buffalo in the Playoffs to earn their first berth in the Stanley Cup Final. But the Caps were swept in four games.

Alexander Ovechkin arrived in 2005, and since 2007-2008, the Capitals have reached the Playoffs almost every year. The 2014-2015 season began a run of three consecutive years that the Capitals reached the second round, only to lose in heartbreaking fashion. In 2015-2016, they won a franchise-high and NHL-best 56 games only to be felled by Pittsburgh, all the losses coming by one goal. They won a league-best 55 games the next year, but again lost to the Penguins in the second round.

The Capitals would go on to win their first Stanley Cup Championship in franchise history in 2018 when they beat the Vegas Golden Knights. Ovechkin currently ranks second in most career goals scored with 822 and continues to chase Wayne Gretzky's career mark of 894. Along with Gartner and Langway, Yvon Labre and Dale Hunter have had their numbers retired.

not the best night for caps

by zuto on 10/9/09Verizon Center - Washington

caps really didn't seem to be playing their best. they left holes in their defense and didn't move offensively as a team very well... and the last goal just should not have happened. oh well... maybe next time...

The seats at the Verizon Center are the most comfortable around. I definitely recommend this venue for any event.

Come out and cheer on our Caps!

    by RichL2 on 10/4/09Verizon Center - Washington

I was at Verizon Center on 10/3/2009 - the home opener. There is nothing like this team. They are sooooo exciting to watch! The atmosphere at the phone booth is electric and the venue is first rate, lots of food and drink available with minimal waits. Even the bathrooms are plentiful! There is not better sporting event in DC at this time. Better hurry up and get tickets, every game should be a sellout!

The Caps are a team to experience!

    by Dette2 on 9/24/09Verizon Center - Washington

If given a choice of seeing basketball, football or hockey -- I would choose hockey. This was my 2nd experience seeing the Caps play and I've never been so driven and excited about seeing any sport as I am about Caps hockey. It's fast paced and just a great evening to be had.

The Capitals organization and the fans

by Hoyle on 9/12/09Verizon Center - DC

What a great organization...great fans (loyal fans). Seeing the standing ovation at the end of the season was one of the most heart felt moments in sports for this area in some time (for me). It made me proud to be a hockey fan...better yet, a Capitals fan. Thank you I would like to make my resignation as a fan of the Redskins public. I grew up a fan through association and loved my "skins". I gave up at the end of the 07' season. Its kinda like how I became with the Dallas Cowboys. I will not even be a competitive fan of the team that isn't even worth it (at least they will do whatever it takes to win....they will take anyone, I mean anyone). I am happy to say my love for sports has truely been raised. ...have you ever seen the veterans handbook for players in the NFL. If you get the chance go to the back. You will see the last page states, "If you are thinking of retiring give Dan Snyder (Vinnie Cerrato) a call

    Nothing Beats NHL Playoffs

    by t2bigdog on 7/25/09Verizon Center - Washington

Although the Home Team fell flat, there was nothing better than being there to watch the end of a phenominal season. And, looking back, you can say that you were there to see the Stanley Cup winner advance one step closer to hockey's holy grail.

This was a truly amazing event. Game 7 CAPS vs Pitt who could ask for me? it would have been nicer if the caps didn't go in and lay a duck that game but there's always nest season. Go caps!!!!

    UNFINISHED BUSINESS

by Dools on 7/11/09Verizon Center - Washington

After a great regular season and beating the Rangers in round 1 I had high hopes for the Penguin series especially the way the series started. But the injuries and the fact they did not play Nylander didn't help once they fell behind.
