Washington Capitals History
The Capitals were founded in 1974, but did not post a winning record or reach the Playoffs until the 1982-1983 season, when a group led by top scorers Dennis Maruk and Mike Gartner, along with defenseman Rod Langway, ended the frustration. It began a remarkable streak of 14 consecutive seasons in the Playoffs.
After that streak ended in 1996-1997, the Capitals bounced back the next year to win their first conference title. Led by right wing Peter Bondra and goalie Olaf Kölzig, they defeated Boston, Ottawa and Buffalo in the Playoffs to earn their first berth in the Stanley Cup Final. But the Caps were swept in four games.
Alexander Ovechkin arrived in 2005, and since 2007-2008, the Capitals have reached the Playoffs almost every year. The 2014-2015 season began a run of three consecutive years that the Capitals reached the second round, only to lose in heartbreaking fashion. In 2015-2016, they won a franchise-high and NHL-best 56 games only to be felled by Pittsburgh, all the losses coming by one goal. They won a league-best 55 games the next year, but again lost to the Penguins in the second round.
The Capitals would go on to win their first Stanley Cup Championship in franchise history in 2018 when they beat the Vegas Golden Knights. In 2025, Ovechkin surpassed Wayne Gretzky’s record for the most career goals scored with 897. Along with Gartner and Langway, Yvon Labre and Dale Hunter have had their numbers retired.

Go see the Caps this year!! They’ll be really great this year!!!
My family and I went to the playoff game against The Canadians on 5/4. It was such a good game. Playoff hockey is the most intense in all of sports if you ask me. It was such a fun night and to cap it off, they wont 4-1! SO. MUCH. FUN!
I went to the caps playoff game on the 4th against the Canadiens. Its always a fun time At Capital One arena. It was such a exciting game and the caps crushed the Canadians 4-1. Time to make a run at the cup. Lets go!!!!!!
We went to the Caps versus The Canadians on 4/23 and it was an absolute banger of a hockey game. The nonstop energy that hockey games have is unmatched in sports. Capital One Arena never fails to deliver. If you have seen hockey on TV but not in person, do yourself a favor and see a game live. GO CAPS
On march 22 I took my son to his first Capitols game. He absolutely loved it. They played the Florida Panthers and it was a battle. The food and drink concession had everything and our seats were incredible. I dont think there was an empty seat in the house. We got to see my sons favorite player, Alex Ovechkin. He cant stop talking about it.
I’m in the US for holidays and could get a ticket to my very first hockey game, and a playoff game to top it off. It was amazing and definitely something I will repeat in my next visit!
Hi. I took my son to the Washington Capitols game on 4/23. It was playoff and the atmosphere was electric. The Capital One Arena is great. The player introductions and pregame was my sons favorite part because of the light show. Weird I know. But we had a great night and cant wait to get to another game next season. GO CAPS!
Great game, great atmosphere. Loved capital One arena, but our seats were scary. They were high up, and chairs, move able chairs, not seats attached to the floor. A little scary. Apparently they were movable so accessible seats could be added there. I wouldn’t recommend sitting there in those tows. Otherwise, arena was great, clean, great staff etc.
Great seats, great price, arena was easy to get to
The arena is great, fan base is terrific and workers were very friendly and thanked everyone as fans left
BEST HOCKEY GAME I HAVE EVER BEEN TO... THERE WAS A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING IN THE GAME TO KEEP YOU ON YOUR FEET!
Awesome OVI tied Gretzky goal record we came down from Montréal for this
What a most incredible and memorable experience to be there during Ovechkin’s goal 894. I will remember this always!
We had an amazing time at the Capitals game on Sunday, March 31! We had great seats that were donated to us through a foundation that we are a part of. Our 16 year old daughter has Hodgkins Lymphoma and has always wanted to go to a Capitals game. She was so excited to be able to go to her first Capitals hockey game! The only complaint we had is that the food is beyond expensive!
Great views from every seat, friendly staff, clean, a wonderful experience.
The seats in this section were under repair. Essentially it is a section of no frills fold down chairs that have been put there while the section is being repaired/new seats being installed. No drink holders either. View is good and so was the game, but fix those damn seats!
Went to see a Capitals game with my family and had an awesome time!! The atmosphere is spirirted and energetic. The fans were friendly and got into the game, with cheering and clapping. Food and drinks were the typical fair, good and easy access. Really enjoyed the light displays. To top it all off, the Capitals won, with a goal by Ovechkin.
Great game and great seats! Big 10 person fight, great game and and Ovechkin goal. Awesome day.
Had a great game with the Capitals. Arena atmosphere was electric and the fnas were cheering on the Caps! Anytime the Caps play it is a experience and getting a 5-2 win was that much better!
Seats were worse then an airplane. Was uncomfortable the whole time and I'm 5 11. I can only imagine how bad it was for the people taller than me
