Washington Capitals History

The Capitals were founded in 1974, but did not post a winning record or reach the Playoffs until the 1982-1983 season, when a group led by top scorers Dennis Maruk and Mike Gartner, along with defenseman Rod Langway, ended the frustration. It began a remarkable streak of 14 consecutive seasons in the Playoffs.

After that streak ended in 1996-1997, the Capitals bounced back the next year to win their first conference title. Led by right wing Peter Bondra and goalie Olaf Kölzig, they defeated Boston, Ottawa and Buffalo in the Playoffs to earn their first berth in the Stanley Cup Final. But the Caps were swept in four games.

Alexander Ovechkin arrived in 2005, and since 2007-2008, the Capitals have reached the Playoffs almost every year. The 2014-2015 season began a run of three consecutive years that the Capitals reached the second round, only to lose in heartbreaking fashion. In 2015-2016, they won a franchise-high and NHL-best 56 games only to be felled by Pittsburgh, all the losses coming by one goal. They won a league-best 55 games the next year, but again lost to the Penguins in the second round.

The Capitals would go on to win their first Stanley Cup Championship in franchise history in 2018 when they beat the Vegas Golden Knights. In 2025, Ovechkin surpassed Wayne Gretzky’s record for the most career goals scored with 897. Along with Gartner and Langway, Yvon Labre and Dale Hunter have had their numbers retired.

  • New Screen is Epic!

by Mike K on 11/20/25Capital One Arena - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

I hadn't been to a Caps game in a couple years, so I noticed the change in the big, multi-sided screen hanging down in center of the venue. HUGE upgrade! Very clear with lots of extra data, and dazzling light shows. Food and drink choices were pretty good (although, of course, pricey). I even got to see Ovie add to his record-breaking goal count.

  • Great evening of fun

This was my first NHL game and it was awesome to see the Capitals play in their home arena. Despite the loss, I had a great time and got lucky to see the game go into OT and then shootouts! The atmosphere was electrifying. I had so much fun and look forward to going to another game in the future.

  • Awesome Venue!

Attended the recent game against my New Jersey Devils. The arena is beautiful and offers a variety of food and drinks. Parking can be pretty seamless in the Lexus garage (There are other options very nearby as well). Seats are comfortable and the presentation is top notch. My interactions with staff and fans was great making the environment fun and safe for everyone.

  • What a night!!

This was my first time at the Capitol One arena and I was not disappointed. The entire experience was fantastic! Every staff member we met was friendly and helpful. The arena itself is very nice - the screens are well placed and clear, and everything was very clean. To top it all off, MY TEAM WON!! Let's go, Boston Bruins!

  • Great game!

by Chris on 9/28/25GIANT Center - HersheyRating: 4 out of 5

Overall it was a great experience with a great game. The staff was efficient and helpful and it was very organized and ran smoothly. It would have been nice if they had allowed Caps and Bears season ticket holders to be in the season ticket holder lines and in a few minutes early like normal games.

  • What a rip off

by Steve on 9/28/25GIANT Center - HersheyRating: 1 out of 5

I, like everyone else payed a premium price for a PRE SEASON game thinking that I would get to see the big names for the Capitals and Flyers. WHAT A JOKE!! I knew before hand that Oveckin more than likely wouldn’t play because of an injury but I felt confident that I would see other regular starters for the Caps. Not a chance! If I wanted to see the Hershey Bears play I would wait and enjoy them during the regular season!! I like Ethan Frank and McIllraith but come on. One season or so removed from the Bears doesn’t justify $70/ seat to see them in a preseason game!!

  • Great Venue

the pre-season game at Hershey was great place was clean, easy parking they should do that every year!

  • Caps vs Flyers

by Michelle on 9/28/25GIANT Center - HersheyRating: 5 out of 5

This was a great game. Getting to watch some of the professional players and some that are trying to make the team was awesome! Hoping that the Giant center will continue to have pre season games like this!
