About

Blending folk, soul, blues, and Appalachian traditional elements into a refreshingly timeless sound that sits outside of any particular musical era, Valerie June stands in a long and storied line of unique Memphis performers, a city with a still vibrant music scene even into the 21st century. The daughter of a brick cleaner from Humboldt in the flatlands of West Tennessee, June took quickly to the various local roots music styles in the area, teaching herself guitar and developing her own mix of it, interpreting traditional material like it was still alive and breathing while also writing her own material with an eye to the influences of passionate and socially minded songwriters like Bob Marley. She officially began performing at the age of 19 as the wife part of the husband-and-wife duo Bella Sun (the couple released an album, No Crystal Stair, in 2004 on their own Bella Sun Music imprint), but when the marriage fell apart, June left the south and began living the life of a gypsy street musician, playing for change in bus and subway stations up and down the West Coast. She eventually returned to Tennessee, settling finally in Memphis, where she slid right into the city's active music scene. By now she had added banjo and lap steel to her musical base, and she began to draw local attention for her powerful performances, becoming a favorite at area folk festivals and workshops. She recorded two albums, The Way of the Weeping Willow and Mountain of Rose Quartz, at legendary Ardent Studios in Memphis, but she really came into the national eye when she was featured, along with rappers Al Kapone and Muck Sticky and other musicians, in $5 Cover, an MTV web series put together by Craig Brewer, the creator of the movie Hustle & Flow, which followed Memphis musicians as they scrambled to pay the rent, fall in and out of love, and yes, play music in one of the most storied musical cities in the world. The series aired early in 2009, giving June and her music a platform for wider exposure. ~ Steve Leggett, Rovi

    Compelling Acoustic Set!

by Lee Sharp on 4/24/19Saint Andrews Hall - Detroit

My wife and I loved the show. I was not aware it was going to be an acoustic set. Just Valerie June and the audience. It felt like she was just singing to my wife and I, with a blend of new work and her more established works. She covered most of the songs I was hoping to hear, although she didn't play Pushing Against a Stone or Shotgun, and I thought Shotgun would have fit well with the set. And as a side note, I haven't been to Saint Andrew's Hall in over 25 years. Wow, it has changed a lot over the years, and is just a great venue now. It has the feel of a performance in your living room with great acoustics. My only complaint was lighting, and I imagine it was deliberate, but there wasn't a bright spotlight on Ms. June, so it was hard to get good pictures or video. So we weren't overwhelmed with distracting strobe lights and stuff, but we didn't have great lighting for pictures. She made up for it by meeting with fans after the show for personal photos, so this is totally a five star event in our book! My wife and I can't wait for you to come back to Detroit and we are also going to get tickets for the Howard Jones show coming up in June at Saint Andrew's Hall since we loved the venue so much!

The venue is phenomenal.....and Valerie June is amazing. I highly recommend seeing her live. I have two of her CD's and have seen her before but in this venue she was even more mystical.

    Great music - bad sound

    by M. M. on 2/12/19Sixth & I - Washington

Valerie June is wonderful, creative, unique. She fills the performance space with not only great music but also great feelings. Unfortunately, her performance at Sixth & I was afflicted with ‘sound’ issues - there was constant feedback after the third or 4th song. When she spoke she sounded muffled. Sixth and I is not that large a space. I could see the sound guy on the right of the stage and he looked relaxed as though he were not only enjoying the show but oblivious to the awful sounds washing over the audience. As much as I love Valerie June’s music (and I really love it!) - because of tech issues Saturday’s performance was pretty difficult to fully enjoy.

    Valerie June in DC

    by Ben on 2/12/19Sixth & I - Washington

Amazing performance. One of the most unique voices I've ever heard. To hear a black woman singing Appalachian inspired music is memorizing. Love her! She should have been on stage at the Grammys Sunday night! Hopefully one day.

Valerie June is truly unique. I love the way she combines gospel, country, and old time sounds to create original music. I love the stories she tells, and her voice. It was my first visit to the Fletcher Opera Theater. It's a lovely, intimate theater with great sound.

Valerie June was great and hope she comes back next year. Also enjoyed the opening act, "The War and Treaty". The sound and seating were both very good. I'll note that the volume was too high for the entire evening.

They are the reason that we came to the show. We just saw them at the Ark Music Festival and the stole the show. They were just as great at the Capital.

Alternative, Indi, roots music for the soul

by 2Hdog on 12/8/17The Fillmore - San Francisco

Valery June is one of those preformers that can truly captivate an audience with her songs and stage Presence. She sings songs from the soul with a backup band that can really captivate a crowd with subtle beauty then bring the crowd to a boil and back again

    LOVE that Girl

by Jaybeesgirl on 10/26/17Birchmere - Alexandria

The Singer has an amazing sound to her voice and projection, also such a wonderful guitar plucker to accompany the voice and songs she sang. I would definitely return to see her amazing ACT.

True star quality with an utterly unique sound. Whole band had a virtuoso sound blending genres with style and respect. Charming stories and rapport interspersed with the best most sincerely felt songs I've heard in years. If you get the chance, go.

    Turn down the mic!

by Anonymous on 3/16/17Town Hall - New York

Very distinctive voice with a great high range, but it quickly becomes piercing and shrill if the volume isn't adjusted to accommodate with accompanying instruments. Playing was kitschy, but sloppy overall. Maybe she's trying to go in a different direction given the new album, but it was a far cry from the first. Even those songs came off shrill, too up-tempo and bland sounding. Disappointing evening.

    Valerie June was terrific!

by MusicMaster202 on 3/14/17Town Hall - New York

This was the sixth time my wife and I have seen Valerie June. It looked like most seats were taken at the Town Hall, so it was great to see that she could fill a large venue at a ticketed event. She performed solidly for an hour and a half. Both she and her band were wonderful. Her music is so authentic and refreshing, with different voicings and reflecting numerous influences. We loved that her trademark banter hasn't changed. Her set list included songs from both her recently released CD and her first CD. We enjoyed her opening act Anthony D'Amato. One overall negative was that the sound level was too high, making her voice and the instruments sound distorted at times. Another negative was that, despite no announcements about not using cameras, the staff seemed vigilant about preventing their use.
