About

Blending folk, soul, blues, and Appalachian traditional elements into a refreshingly timeless sound that sits outside of any particular musical era, Valerie June stands in a long and storied line of unique Memphis performers, a city with a still vibrant music scene even into the 21st century. The daughter of a brick cleaner from Humboldt in the flatlands of West Tennessee, June took quickly to the various local roots music styles in the area, teaching herself guitar and developing her own mix of it, interpreting traditional material like it was still alive and breathing while also writing her own material with an eye to the influences of passionate and socially minded songwriters like Bob Marley. She officially began performing at the age of 19 as the wife part of the husband-and-wife duo Bella Sun (the couple released an album, No Crystal Stair, in 2004 on their own Bella Sun Music imprint), but when the marriage fell apart, June left the south and began living the life of a gypsy street musician, playing for change in bus and subway stations up and down the West Coast. She eventually returned to Tennessee, settling finally in Memphis, where she slid right into the city's active music scene. By now she had added banjo and lap steel to her musical base, and she began to draw local attention for her powerful performances, becoming a favorite at area folk festivals and workshops. She recorded two albums, The Way of the Weeping Willow and Mountain of Rose Quartz, at legendary Ardent Studios in Memphis, but she really came into the national eye when she was featured, along with rappers Al Kapone and Muck Sticky and other musicians, in $5 Cover, an MTV web series put together by Craig Brewer, the creator of the movie Hustle & Flow, which followed Memphis musicians as they scrambled to pay the rent, fall in and out of love, and yes, play music in one of the most storied musical cities in the world. The series aired early in 2009, giving June and her music a platform for wider exposure. ~ Steve Leggett, Rovi

    Mixed bag

by Live music lover on 5/24/22Pantages Theatre - Minneapolis

Loved the beautiful venue and warm up Chastity Brown but Valerie June was disappointing. Me and my concert going partner agreed that Valerie was charismatic something was wrong with the sound. Her band was great but loud. She has an amazing unique voice but if i didknow the lyrics i wouldn't have understood them and some notes were just plain painful. I think there had to be something off with the sound.

    Hippie Dippy June

by MofoWon on 5/23/22Pantages Theatre - Minneapolis

Sweetest Dolly Parton, voice as crisp as June Carter Cash with the same type of southern twang yet a style all her own. This show was great and she is a great story teller with her self imposed hippy dippy style . Great Friday night!!

    Great show so so sound

by Rich on 5/23/22Pantages Theatre - Minneapolis

Valerie June put on an excellent show that was everything I could want from her but the sound system used left a lot to be desired. This was my first time at the Pantages and I guess it overpowered the theater because her vocals were so blurry that unless you knew the lyrics they were hard to understand. The person I was with was seeing her for the first time and she was disappointed that she couldn’t follow the lyrics. I hope in the future the sound system gets better or I won’t be attending any more shows at the Pantages.

    AMAZING!!!!!!

by musiclovetakemehigher on 5/9/22The Fillmore Silver Spring - Silver Spring

Valerie June is a PRESENCE. A channel for love and wisdom, the music spoke to my very soul. The show was a trip. With Valerie June as a guide, we all journeyed through love, joy and mystery. This artist is a visionary!! The concert a glimpse into other worlds. Treya Lam, (opener, vocals, viola), was a force of lunar energy. Reflective and wise, Treya Lam's melodies and lyrics filled my heart with belonging. If you have the opportunity to see these artists, do not hesitate. This show is worth much more than the dollar value.

    Valerie delivers. Period.

by Masa on 5/7/22Town Hall - New York

In December 2017 my husband, Joe Macias, had 6 months to live and one of his last requests was to see Valerie June at the Fillmore in San Francisco. But he was to weak and couldn’t have been accommodated at that venue. Since he died of ALS in May 2018 I haven’t been strong enough to listen to Valerie June’s music because I would break down in tears. I’m visiting NYC and I went to the Town Hall hoping to make up for Joe’s missing that Fillmore concert. I believe he was with me at Town Hall. During the intermission after Buffalo Nickel a song was played on the speakers that was by his favorite singer in the world, Ray Charles. He sang Joe’s most loved songs, You Are My Sunshine. Of all the singers and songs in our lives this was Joe saying thank you for bringing him along. I could see him smiling.

Valerie is a precious soul. I've heard her at Red Rocks and Telluride and she rocked the house. Town Hall in NYC has the worst sound ever. It was embarrassing for big city

    Excellent performance!

by AIRLESSMILES on 4/8/22The Fillmore - San Francisco

I was excited for my wife and I to have experienced Valerie June live and close to us finally! She's definitely an artist that sounds just as good live as she does recorded. It was both of our first times at this venue and really enjoyed it. I look forward to visiting more artists in the future and seeing Valerie June again in the future!
