About

Blending folk, soul, blues, and Appalachian traditional elements into a refreshingly timeless sound that sits outside of any particular musical era, Valerie June stands in a long and storied line of unique Memphis performers, a city with a still vibrant music scene even into the 21st century. The daughter of a brick cleaner from Humboldt in the flatlands of West Tennessee, June took quickly to the various local roots music styles in the area, teaching herself guitar and developing her own mix of it, interpreting traditional material like it was still alive and breathing while also writing her own material with an eye to the influences of passionate and socially minded songwriters like Bob Marley. She officially began performing at the age of 19 as the wife part of the husband-and-wife duo Bella Sun (the couple released an album, No Crystal Stair, in 2004 on their own Bella Sun Music imprint), but when the marriage fell apart, June left the south and began living the life of a gypsy street musician, playing for change in bus and subway stations up and down the West Coast. She eventually returned to Tennessee, settling finally in Memphis, where she slid right into the city's active music scene. By now she had added banjo and lap steel to her musical base, and she began to draw local attention for her powerful performances, becoming a favorite at area folk festivals and workshops. She recorded two albums, The Way of the Weeping Willow and Mountain of Rose Quartz, at legendary Ardent Studios in Memphis, but she really came into the national eye when she was featured, along with rappers Al Kapone and Muck Sticky and other musicians, in $5 Cover, an MTV web series put together by Craig Brewer, the creator of the movie Hustle & Flow, which followed Memphis musicians as they scrambled to pay the rent, fall in and out of love, and yes, play music in one of the most storied musical cities in the world. The series aired early in 2009, giving June and her music a platform for wider exposure. ~ Steve Leggett, Rovi

    Love Valerie.

A true original. Doesn't sound like anyone else. Her songs are mystical in a way, to me anyway.

    As Good as it Gets

by M12345 on 3/14/17Town Hall - New York

With a gospel trained voice that generates goosebumps every time, the skills of a bluegrass banjo player, and a deep appreciation for the style and work ethic that came out of Memphis when people like Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Otis Redding and Isaac Hayes were defining Rock and Roll - Valerie June is giving us fresh music that is current, exciting and still in touch with her roots. Valerie made me cry, she made me feel spiritual and she made me dance. What more can a great artist give to her audience?

Valerie June pulled out all the stops

by Anonymous on 3/14/17Town Hall - New York

Valerie June was magnificent at the Town Hall. Her band was expanded with a full horn section and an additional keyboard player, which was a bigger band than on the previous show I saw on the tour. Both shows were great though -- and I couldn't pick a better one. It always scratches an itch when she plays 'Raindance', such an cleansing song. I was pretty stressed coming to the concert and I left feeling happy, relaxed, and uplifted. The horns on Workin' Woman Blues got very hot, like classic afrobeat...the guitars did an amazing job with the parts in the smaller show, where it sounded almost like Fugazi's more intricate work. Valerie hops genres (folk, country, blues, soul, indie rock, oldie rock), goes deep, and gets her message of love and possibility across in a magical, alchemical way. She is a blessing upon this world.

    great voice, entertaining throughout

    by BotanyBob on 3/13/17Sixth & I - Washington

Valerie June has a great voice and melds a variety of styles into a unique yet very natural sound. During the show she sang accompanying herself on banjo and played guitars (electric and acoustic) with her band who did a fine job moving from folky, rock, jazz and electric blues. It made for a very entertaining show. Valerie's vocals easily transitioned from delicate to powerful even within the same song - always very expressive. If you have listened to her records, or even a few of her songs, and think you might be interested in seeing her perform - GO you won't be disappointed!

    Sound engineering

    by SRSI on 3/12/17Sixth & I - Washington

In most songs, the backup band was so loud you could not hear VJ's wonderful voice. It is that voice that brought me to the concert! Loved her outfit, her antics & gymnastics, and her dancing. But mostly her voice when the band was quieter and we could clearly hear her. Very nice venue.

    Amazing performer but....

by SonjaCoons on 2/21/17Duck Room at Blueberry Hill - St Louis

2 things hat didn't set well with me: 1 - it was too short of a set by far. I even saw her with coat and bag leaving within 5 minutes of getting off the stage. Seemed like she didn't want to be there. 2 - a lady claiming to be her aunt kept doing laps in the crowd asking for cash because her ex husband wasn't a good man and she needed help getting home. Idk if true but was hanging with Valerie's crowd.

    All Eyes on Valerie June

by Yeysk on 10/7/14Sixth & I Historic Synagogue - Washington

The beautiful synagogue at 6th and I in Washington, D.C., is a house of worship, and indeed it was last week when Valerie June performed there. She wails. She howls. She hums. She growls. She had the audience eating out of her hands. Valerie June has a high, lonesome, almost strange voice that commands your attention. This is no background singer at a loud pub; in such a place I couldn't imagine my gaze turned anywhere but on her. I waited for that moment when I leave my body ever so briefly during a live performance, and yes, that moment came. Valerie June whacks her guitar strings like a preacher's podium. She tickles her little banjo -- the one she calls "the baby" -- like a kitten. In her songs you can hear the mountains and valleys of her Tennessee upbringing and the structure and discipline that the music scene there helps give a songwriter -- bumping against the uncivilized civilization of her now-home in Brooklyn. Ms. June drew a loving audience to 6th and I, and I became one of them. We all rose to our feet to beg an encore.

Valerie June - bluesy and sweet

by deegsteach on 10/6/14Sixth & I Historic Synagogue - Washington

This show was great. Valerie sounded fantastic and had a great rapport with her fans. She told great folksy stories about her family and the origins of her songs and life in Memphis. She moved seamlessly from instrument to instrument and her voice is so unique you can't wait to hear what she does with it next. Her style of strumming was mesmerizing and it was clear she had an emotional connection to her music. My one wish is that her set was longer. It was about 90 minutes, but I was enjoying it so much, I wanted more. Otherwise, a great show; would definitely see her again.

    Valerie is American Music

by Sixoh on 5/21/14Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

Took my 11 yr old with me to see Valerie in Atlanta. We both loved her performance. She is a traditional singer songwriter capable of filling a hall with her sweet personality and from-the-heart music. She is so real, not pretending to be too cool for the rest of us. Watch her interviews and live performances on the net!

I was just a tag along to this event and really wasn't looking forward to it based on youtube videos but I loved it! She's so cute and amazingly talented with a great sense of humor which adds to the performance. She was available after the performance for greeting and she has such a beautiful spirit. I'm looking forward to seening her again and again.

by ennk on 5/20/14Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

I always love events at this venue. Valerie June was amazing in her performance. Unfortunately, her opening act wasn't very good at all though. Fortunately, June's performance made up for the unsteady start.
