About

TY SEGALL IN CONCERT:

With his fuzzed-out guitars, analog organs, jaunty drums, and knack for Beatles-esque melodies, Ty Segall is one of the most compelling and prolific artists to throw his hat in the late-'60s/early-'70s rock revival ring in recent memory. Segall is a anything but a retro novelty -- just when his free-wheeling, psychedelic tunes start to feel familiar, he throws in an unexpected harmonic or tempo change, and it's these surprising sonic curveballs that make his raucous live shows such riveting affairs. Segall's 2014 album Manipulator was his most-polished and acclaimed release yet and he does it total justice in concert, treating fans to swirling, sweltering sets full of compact, infinitely catchy garage rock nuggets like "The Singer" and "Feel".

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

San Francisco-based psych rock wunderkind Ty Segall got his start in the mid-'00s performing with a variety of West Coast underground bands including Epsilons and Party Fowl. He launched his solo career in 2008 with several cassette releases, and later that year he made his proper debut with an eponymous album released on Castle Face Records. He followed up in 2009 with Lemons, a critically acclaimed album that helped garner him a growing national fanbase thanks to standout tracks like "Cents". Since then Segal has released an album every year, incorporating new instruments and musical styles on each successive outing. In 2014 he dropped his seventh studio effort Manipulator, a muscular and wildly creative double-album that has both critics and fans hailing him as one of garage rocks most worthy contemporary torchbearers.

This was the first time that I saw able to see Ty live. Wow, what a show! I highly recommend seeing him if you have not. Great band and Ty himself is an amazing musician.

We’ve seen Ty a couple of times- and he never disappoints. The Lincoln Theater was such a unique venue. Amazing show.

Wow, this was the first time I saw Ty, and I have to say that this was a great, great, show. Amazing sound, well presented, well performed. I very highly recommend seeing this band, as they are on top of their game. True pros.

  • Goodbye Bread

by Goodbye Bread on 2/27/24The Wiltern - Los AngelesRating: 1 out of 5

Was stoked to go to a show at the historic Wiltern but found it to be a disappointing experience. The event parking was $40. For 2 hours! I ended up finding a spot on a local street half a mile away. Then walked through the smelly streets of downtown to get there. The venue has amazing mid-century artistic details, like hand painted frescoes on the ceiling, and deco style bas-reliefs jutting from the walls. Very cool. But the lighting in there is so tacky and modern! There's a bunch of pink and blue LED lights everywhere like a freakin' amusement park! Ruins the historic value. I wanted to get a decent mixed drink like an Old Fashioned, but they didn't even have the ingredients! With all those bars they have backlit to the nines by cheap lighting and bartenders in matching vests :/ Got a freakin tall can of beer for almost 20 bucks. And lastly the sound in there was just terrible. So dry and lacking in reverb. The mix isolated every instrument in its own lane, so there was no blend. That might have been because of the band. Garage rock and a venue like that are not meant to go together. Ty did good. The music in general sounded awful. The treble on the lead guitar was painful to the ears. The fuzz on the bass did sound cool. Overall the sound was awful. The general admission ticket concept is okay. Audience spacing was good. Best part of the venue is the couches downstairs by the bathroom, where I sat staring at the wall wondering where my $100 went. Upon leaving the show there is a haze of smoke from burnt meat and semi-circle of street vendors surrounding the exits beneath the marque all saying "hot dog hot dog hot dog hot dog hot dog hot dog hot dog hot dog hot dog hot dog" Its like something out of a David Lynch movie. Going to a show is supposed to be fun. You'd have to pay me to do that again.

  • Wanted to love it

by Kit on 2/26/24The Wiltern - Los AngelesRating: 3 out of 5

I wanted to really love my experience, but the sound was not right. I felt like everything was cranked up to the max so all the nuance and skill was lost- it just sounded like noise half the time.

  • This show was too loud

by Mugger on 2/26/24The Wiltern - Los AngelesRating: 3 out of 5

Loved his new music. Another amazing show, but the volume was too loud. I’ve seen many Ty Segall and FUZZ shows. This one was too loud

This was my first Ty Segall show but hopefully not the last. I had the best time watching the band shred and jam like there’s no tomorrow. Great venue too! Thanks Ty, you guys were amazing.

High energy mix from folk to metal, Ty and the freedom band never disappoint. Terragram has the perfect size and sound for a live show. Great space!!
