  • My First Opera and now I am Hooked

by Meridiangrandma on 2/27/17Morrison Center for the Performing Arts - BoiseRating: 5 out of 5

This was my first opera. I read the plot and listened to some youtube videos ahead of time. I was amazed by the range of emotions and the ability of the vocalists and the symphony. I will never miss an opportunity to attend an opera, for it was an adventure that words can't describe.

  • The talent in Tosca was top notch.

The stage backdrops and props were so realistic that I felt I was there. We were seated 16 rows back in the center which is a great place to be. The balance between the orchestra and the singers at that point was perfect. We are so blessed in Treasure valley to have talent of this caliber coming to perform for us. There was a point with the local cast that the volume could have been a little stronger, but it still fit the setting just fine.

i almost hate to say it, but when the female lead is substantially overweight, it is distracting and not believable that the male leads are all in love with her.

  • What are they saying?

The opera Tosca is of course well known and equally dramatic. This production was enjoyable but not exceptionally memorable. The sets of the 2014-15 season of Opera Grand Rapids have left me feeling nonplussed. I enjoy opera, but am not a connoisseur by any means, but the sets, along with costumes are two things that draw me to the opera in addition to story, music, and singing. The set of this show was unimaginative and detracted from the rest. During this performance, there were technical difficulties with the sub-titles, that also caused a distraction while technicians attempted to correct. The contingency fix was passable, but I would expect this to be a critical backup plan with better execution. All in all, the performers did a very fine job and my negatives are all directed at the facilities and "low cost" feel of set design.

The performance was excellent. There was a glitch in the subtitles in the second act which was a little frustrating but the performances were amazing.
