  • Tosca at Baltimore Opera Lyric

by weloveopera on 11/6/13Modell Performing Arts Center at the Lyric - BaltimoreRating: 5 out of 5

Terrific traditional presentation of a favorite opera, with exc singing, acting, staging, and, of course, glorious music. BaltOp deserves to be sold out, based on the quality of the productions we've seen the past few years!

  • Great Operatic Performance

by Capamaestro on 11/4/13Modell Performing Arts Center at the Lyric - BaltimoreRating: 5 out of 5

Great vocals and acting. One of my favorite operas. Orchestra was excellent (BSO). The Maryland Boys Choir (Conducted by the very talented Steven Holmes) was great to see in action. Very well executed. Enjoyed it thoroughly.

Beautiful sets, exquisite costuming - combine that with gorgeous vocal artistry and you have a performance of the season.

  • Grand Opera is Grand!

by operateacher on 10/11/13Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre - AtlantaRating: 4 out of 5

Enjoyed our evening at the opera this week. The singers all did a great job at both singing and acting...sets, lighting, stage direction, costumes were all tasteful and well-done. The orchestra was excellent ! Tosca is a great soap opera. The familiar arias well sung, but since this was a soap opera, the big arias could have used a more emotional delivery. Atlanta Opera has come a long way in the right direction!

Great even! Atlanta needs more classical events like Tosca.

  • Enjoyable performance

by Vetra on 2/9/13Tucson Music Hall - TucsonRating: 4 out of 5

I had seen "Tosca" before, and found that the Arizona Opera told the story in a new way -- with touches of humor as well as drama. The three acts went by quickly because the story captivated the audience, and the music of Puccini moved us. Thank you, Arizona Opera!

  • Intervals too long

by Brumie on 2/5/13Tucson Music Hall - TucsonRating: 4 out of 5

The sets were excellent. The cast was excellent. The two intervals of 25min each was too much and detracted from the overal enjoyment. We will have to consider this interval issue when we consider our next visit.

  • Cavarrodossi & Scarpia

    by dcd2212 on 2/5/13Tucson Music Hall - TucsonRating: 4 out of 5

Both Cavarrodossi & Scarpia stood out in this production and showed world class talent! The production was very effective. I wish Tosca had been portrayed as the Diva she should be. She is not a soubrette! Her singing was lovely but did not match the force and resonance of the men in this cast. Overall a very wonderful afternoon!

  • Tosca -- Arizona Opera at its Best

by Liplaw on 2/4/13Tucson Music Hall - TucsonRating: 5 out of 5

The Tucson performance on February 2 of the Arizona Opera Company's production of Puccini's Tosca may be the best performance of an opera by a regional company I have ever seen. It compared favorably with Metropolitan Opera Company productions I have seen in New York and several performances in Paris and Vienna. All principals were in excellent voice, the orchestra and chorus were admirable (typical with the AOC), and the production values were very high. I have seen, live and recorded, many productions of this opera. AOC's February 2 performance opened new dimensions in this work and gave me a deeper appreciation of it. Bravo!

  • Tosca

by Schietto on 2/4/13Tucson Music Hall - TucsonRating: 3 out of 5

We went on Saturday evening to once again enjoy Puccini wonderful masterpiece Tosca. Arizona Opera production has mostly been very enjoyable. It was again. All and all wonderful. Well directed and technically perfect. Cavaradossi,Adam Diegel did excellent work and his absolutely gorgeous strong tenor voice could not be any more perfect. What a nice young talent. So was as Scarpia Young bass-baritone Kristopher Imiter. Jill Gardner, as Tosca was very `country girlish`in her performance. Tosca usually is strong voiced little more live than her´s was. Maybe this is what the director wanted from her. But I would have enjoued a little more stronger Tosca. A little more liveness in her role. Was she also gettting this flu going around ? The very alive one in the whole opera was Peter Strummer as Sacristan , what a character ! The orchestra was well rehearsed and Joel Revzen can be very pleased with their performance.

Although the performance was splendid, the opera was once again marred by technological problems with the subtitles during one of the most critical points in the story. Customer service agents seemed unconcerned that a critical moment was spoiled by the lack of subtitles and that this has become a recurring problem with performances this year.

  • It was enjoyable.

by PeanutGalleryCrew on 1/29/13Symphony Hall - PhoenixRating: 3 out of 5

I enjoyed the show: the sets were beautiful and the venue was very nice - I don't think there was a bad seat in the house. The story of Tosca is great and has endured the test of time. I'm not an opera expert, but I felt that while the singers did a lovely job, I didn't feel the power and passion I expected them to have given the story and characters they had to work with. I also thought that in some sequences the stage direction could have been a little more visually interesting. At the end of the day, however, it was a good experience and I am glad I attended.

  • Mediocre

by Werther on 1/29/13Symphony Hall - PhoenixRating: 1 out of 5

Having seen a wonderful performance of Lucia at the Arizona Opera in October, I had high expectations. Consequently I was deeply disappointed. The tenor, Garrett Sorenson, was a total catastrophy and should never be allowed again on a stage. No voice, poor technique, bad timing and, as we noticed at Opera Talk, incapable to understand what went wrong. The baritone, Gordon Hawkins, who nowadays sings Wagner, risked a return to Puccini, probably thinking that the Arizona public will be tolerant and not notice that his voice no longer fits the role. He was unconvincing, the orchestra totally silenced him and he also appeared clearly fatigued. The soprano, Jill Gardner, was unequal. In the first act she was poor, her voice had not been prepared in advance. She sleepwalked through the first part of the second act, but she suddenly found her way starting with her aria (Vissi d'arte) which she performed beautifully and from that moment on she was in the role, emotional, convincing and her voice reached the expected range with ease. The production was decent, the orchestra did a good job (albeit with a slight glitch in the act III, but that was probably due to the tenor's mistake) and the director looked, during the Opera Talk, immune to self-criticism. All in all, this was a mediocre production. I can understand that you cannot have Lisette Oropesa everyday, but this was way below the acceptable mark.

  • Tosca was grand opera at its best!

by retrev on 1/29/13Symphony Hall - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

Tosca is my favorite Puccini opera, and this production did not disappoint. The singers in the major roles had wonderful voices, the orchestra played beautifully, and the supporting cast was very good. The acting -- especially that of our Tosca -- was quite good. A thoroughly enjoyable experience! I do have one quibble. In Act 1, Cavaradossi sang his beautiful aria lauding Tosca at the far left stage. We were sitting toward the left and sometimes he was barely in view. Those to the left of us, probably didn't see him at all. I wish he'd been lower to the floor with the portrait, and more to center stage.

  • Amazing Tosca

by Lovesdays on 1/29/13Symphony Hall - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

Took my husband to see Tosca, it was a joy to watch. He had seen it many years ago and it was my first time seeing it. I was overjoyed by the performance. Would love to see it again on a return visit to here in Phx AZ

  • Unforgettable

This was an outstanding performance! Scarpia and Tosca gave unforgettable performances. Tosca's costume was beautiful and so was her singing! Scarpia gave an amazing performance. What a talented baritone , I felt as though I was being personally serenaded!
