  • Florentine Delivers Flat, Forced "Barber"

by Terry on 5/22/23Uihlein Hall Marcus Center - MilwaukeeRating: 2 out of 5

The Florentine Opera's latest "Barber of Seville" featured a cast of up-and-comers, bit players and small timers. Some of them could sing well. Others were obviously straining, usually at the high end. While much of the singing was well handled, depth of characterization and ,in some cases, simple acting were rare commodities. As a result, the usually amusing opera was flat and dull. The stage direction ranged from unimaginative to frenzied. Much of the singing was done in the "park and bark" style. The pace of the opera was on the fast side. The orchestra did its best with some players in the brass struggling to stay in key. The overall result was unimpressive.

  • Florentine Opera - Studio Artist Showcase

by Bill F on 2/12/20Wilson Theater at Vogel Hall - MilwaukeeRating: 5 out of 5

This Studio Artist Showcase was a wonderful blend of full opera and highlights of favorite melodies from several operas. The staging, singing and accompaniment were are first-rate. A wonderful afternoon during a snowstorm.

Wonderful performance! The artists are so talented and passionate it was such a beautiful show to watch and listen to. Loved the discussion prior to the show as it took the whole experience to another level. Helped me understand the story and gave me another dimension to consider, more complex than I realized

  • Dragon?

by MuskegoMusky on 5/16/18Uihlein Hall Marcus Center - MilwaukeeRating: 5 out of 5

The opening scene is supposed to be a dragon arrack, but projected on the scenery was a caterpillar and the audience had a good laugh. Papageno was good and the Sarastro's henchman stole the show with his antics. The Queen of the Night got a standing ovation for her aria in Act II. Orchestra was great although sometimes not in sync with the singers. The kids next to us, 3 of them, were antsy during the entire show, bouncing up and down, kicking the seats in front of them and playing with string-very distracting and the mother did nothing to settle them down. I think they could have spent more on scenery (there wasn't any). But how can you ruin Mozart-you can't.

  • Viva Opera at The Florentine

by WWSS on 3/21/18Uihlein Hall Marcus Center - MilwaukeeRating: 5 out of 5

This was an excellent performance. The used their guest stars, added additional talent and their studio artists and chorus. The voices were great with a good selection of music. The full Milwaukee Symphony, on stage made for a wonderful evening of opera music.
