About

Tootsie is a Tony Award-winning stage production of director Sydney Pollack’s beloved 1982 comedy film. Like Pollack’s film, the musical revolves around a struggling soap actor who adopts a new identity as a woman to land more roles, while serving as a love letter to Broadway. Tootsie features a Tony-winning book by Robert Horn and a score by 2018 Tony winner David Yazbek (The Band’s Visit). The musical premiered in September 2018 at the Cadillac Palace Theatre in Chicago before premiering on Broadway in April 2019. Tootsie is now touring across North America, with a regional premiere at the Ogunquit Playhouse in Ogunquit, Maine. The cast has included Drew Becker as Michael Dorsey and Dorothy Michaels, Ashley Alexandra as Julie Nichols, Payton Reilly as Sandy Lester, Lukas James Miller as Max Von Horn, Jared David Michael Grant as Jeff Slater, Kathy Halenda as Rita Marshall, Steve Brustien as Stan Fields and Adam du Plessis as Ron Carlisle.

  • Tootsie a disappointment

by SZ on 4/29/22Dolby Theatre - HollywoodRating: 2 out of 5

The book no longer makes sense in today's world. The music is not Yazbek at his best. I'm usually a fan. The cast was mediocre except for a couple of standouts. Disappointed that vaccination cards weren't looked at, and the audience was very lax with their masks.

  • Unsatisfying

by Bil on 4/29/22Dolby Theatre - HollywoodRating: 3 out of 5

The show tries to deal with gender issues in a fun way, but ends up relying on tired stereotypes. For a show with a plot that’s improbable and hokey, the ending is a letdown.

The performance was great. I give the cast a BRAVO.

  • Boring

by Mel on 4/27/22San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San JoseRating: 2 out of 5

Very disappointed. It was so boring I fell asleep during the first half and left at intermission. The tickets were on sale half price so we didn’t lose out much. I wouldn’t recommend the show.

  • Overall consensus was “Meh”

by Skip Harrison on 4/26/22San Diego Civic Theatre - San DiegoRating: 2 out of 5

Recently started back up attending the theater with a group of friends. Recently saw Hairspray which had a great story line and performances. For 8 of us, it was just an average show. For 2 of us, it didn’t suit them at all and they left during intermission. There seemed to be a lot of screaming instead of singing. 🤦‍♂️😂

  • Funny, current

Very funny. They adapted the show to make current to the times. They stayed true to the novie. Great stage production.

The performance was fair and I definitely will not return to the center for the performing arts until the mask mandate is lifted

An outstanding, funny musical. Using ticketmaster for entry was simple.

  • Tootsie touring

by Onnie on 4/26/22San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

Enjoyed the show. Singers words were drowned out by music. Too much amplification in my opinion. Not unique to this show however. Louder isn’t better

  • Great comedic musical

by Blake on 4/25/22San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

This is a very good choice if you want to have a fun night out with a little bit of insightful commentary. Numerous times my partner and I left quite hard, the performance was great, transitions smooth and the sets were well done.

  • Roll Over Tootsie!

by The Reviewer on 4/23/22San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San JoseRating: 3 out of 5

Overall a cute show. I found the lyrics were hard to follow. The lead was good but lacked a resume to headline a touring show. The finale was not what I expected as Michael never finds love. I would’ve liked to see Michael take a bow leave the stage have a cast dance and return for one final bow as Dorothy in the red sequenced dress.

  • Fun fun fun

by Hershey Bar on 4/21/22San Diego Civic Theatre - San DiegoRating: 3 out of 5

I did not remember the movie or much of the premise. I am not sure if it followed the movie or not. I had a very hard time hearing the words when they were talking or singing. Very muffled sound, and I have good hearing. So what I heard abs understand was fun and I enjoyed it. I just wish I could have gotten the whole thing. It was pretty good and music was good too.

  • So disappointed when it left Broadway

by Dabitz on 4/20/22Rating: 5 out of 5

My stomach literally hurt for 3 days after laughing so much watching Tootsie at Broadway before the pandemic days. I was sad when I heard it got cancelled. Not sure what the current cast was, but the original cast was amazing. I wish continued success for for one day to come back to NYC.

  • Tootsie is a winner!

by Boook on 4/19/22San Diego Civic Theatre - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

We really enjoyed this show. There were many laughs, great songwriting, wonderful choreography, very talented performers. The sets were great too. A thoroughly enjoyable show.

  • SAT MATINEE

by dor on 4/19/22San Diego Civic Theatre - San DiegoRating: 4 out of 5

I liked the flow of the musical however some music seemed shrill especially the female vocalist. Also the speed of the words made it difficult to understand and we were fairly close to the front.

  • Talked too fast

by Clack on 4/19/22San Diego Civic Theatre - San DiegoRating: 3 out of 5

I felt the actors were in a hurry to get the show over. They talked too fast and it was difficult to understand them. We were midway down on the first floor. Some very good singers. Good dancing. The sets were inventive.
