Highly recommend Toots for butt shakin.

by Hil2Thril on 9/7/09House of Blues Boston - Boston

Spiritual Rez was a great opening band - definitely a good way to start the dancing scene. Once Toots got on stage, the audience was warmed up. Toots played for three hours! All the faves, and awesome audience participation too. All around a great time. I will definitely see him next time he comes around (which will be soon, I hope!). Hope others enjoyed as well.

    Toots Takes the Night Again!

by JConRockers on 9/5/09House of Blues Boston - Boston

This is the second time I've seen the man and he still puts on a minimum show! Especially at this age, the man's still got it. His new band members were pretty great too and the live brass players added a great effect. As a previous Boston radio DJ for a reggae program, it's always great to see a legend such as Toots. Bless up.

    Strange evening!

by sandalsandbeaches on 9/4/09House of Blues Boston - Boston

This was a strange night... Fear Nuttin Band was good but played way too long, Spiritual Rez was great when they stuck to Zydeco or Louisiana Blues but by then, the crowd was waiting for Toots. There was then a LONG, LONG, LONG intermission (to get people to buy drinks?) and then Toots finally came on at 10:30ish? Having seen him before many times, he still sounded great but there was a weird vibe going on onstage. I don't know if there was technical difficulties but random workers were on the back of the stage and Toots and the Maytalls seemed really off their game. They didn't seem to have a rehearsed and organized set and the songs suffered. I would see them again but not at the House of Blues! VIP Box seats are on the third floor (others are standing room only) we could see fine but you feel a little far back and out of the loop.

    Never skipped an Upbeat

by Jebb on 9/4/09House of Blues Boston - Boston

I missed the Fear Nuttin Band Spiritual Rez delivered and Electrifying set that had unstoppable energy!!! their fusion of Reggae, Funk, and Rock reached into the deepest parts of you an commanded your Soul! Their music forced even the most stagnant of listeners to groove! The horns section was undeniably killer!! and the rest of the band was exploding with energy!! I can't wait to see this band again!! Toots lived up to his reputation as a true entertainer and master of his craft!! The good vibes that was exuded from his prescence will forever have changed those whom were subject to it. The highlights of the show were when Toots shook the hand of everyone in the front row telling everyone he wanted to know "who you are." and during Monkey Man when the entire front of the crowd went up on the stage to "Reggae" with Toots. Memerable show to say the least

Toots was great, came on too late!

by Dogbreath on 9/4/09House of Blues Boston - Boston

Toots was outstanding. Truly one of the founders of reggae, he still pours his all into his show at the age of 61, and he is surrounded by a great band. Unfortunately, I had to work early today so I had to leave in the middle of his smokin' set. The reason he got started sop late was that there were 2 warm- up acts, the first of which, the dreary Fear Nuttin Band, didn't get going until after 8. The second warm-up, Spiritual Rez, was quite happening. But Toots was the one that really got the good-sized crowd moving. His voice is powerful and he makes reggae classics like Funky Kingston seem fresh and contemporary. I recommend his shows to anyone who likes good music, though it was much more fun to see him as the only act booked at Paradise last year.

    Awesome show, great energy

by jimNjuice on 9/4/09House of Blues Boston - Boston

Toots was great! I thought a few songs were jammed on a little too long, the same beat for 15 minutes gets a bit much, but the energy was still there throughout, so I'm not really complaining. The opening bands were both great, stole some of the show from Toots. All in all a great show, and definitely recommended.

    Toots got old!

by BennyBoston on 9/4/09House of Blues Boston - Boston

The warm up bands were great! Toots came out singing out of tune and I'm not really sure what he was doing with his guitar. I felt like the rest of the band was trying to cover for him. Toots have made some great music, but I think it is time to through in the towel. Sorry Toots!

    Toots rocks to the roots!

by HaskellsLoc on 8/8/09Ventura Theatre - Ventura

After a bumpy start with the sound man at the Majestic Ventura Theater, Toots and the Maytalls got the train back on track and rocked everybody to the soul. A small but very enthusiastic crowd got treated to an energetic set of reggae classics from a tight and groovin unit, with beautiful back up singers. Toots led the band on a musically journey through classic roots reggae, into spurts of ska and ocassional soul. Overall, a great dance party that left us with sore legs in the morning and hearts full of love.

Toots: The James Brown of Reggae

by PrettyPickyFan on 8/2/09Showbox at the Market - Seattle

Anyone who has seen Toots & The Maytals over the past 30 some odd years couldn't argue the fact that Toots himself is getting on in his years. In lieu of this the 64 year old godfather of Reggae still packs a punch and played for an energetic and entertaining 2 hour block, calling for as much crowd participation as possible. Needless to say the crowd obliged him. A special note should be included for the opening act, Public Property. I had never heard of them before and they had the entire showbox swaying and grooving to their Pacific Island inspired reggae stylie.

    Toots didn't cook

by Voodoobass on 8/2/09Showbox at the Market - Seattle

Toots didn't bring his 'A' game, and the band didn't seem to cook very much. Toots did a lot of 'teachin' - call and response with the audience, as well as a lot of hand shaking. While the tunes started promisingly, when Toots started singing, the drummer began a kick/hihg-hat vamp, and the rest of the band assumed a generic reggae vamp during the vocal parts. Very reduced energy. Clearly not the same band that played at the EMP several years ago. Then, Toots and his band were clearly a cut above the warm-up acts in intensity annd quality. Waitress said the band had consumed lots of beer ahead of the show.

This show was great. I would go again for sure. Showbox is a sweet venue too.

    Toots is king.

by pimpdaddy on 7/24/09B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New York

This gig was the best thing I've ever seen. I'd been gutted when I'd missed them in my hometown, but my trip to NY was made so much better by these guys. The support act got the crowd going well, and pulled out some good songs, but toots was the real showman. After some epic showcases of songs such as Funky Kingston, Time Enough and Monkey Man, in which there was a stage invasion, the finale of 54-46 Was My Number convinced everyone in that club that he is one of the greatest reggae artists of all time, if not the greatest. Go and see them, whenever you can.

Eek a Mouse so-so, but Toots needs to retire

by SkaBaby on 7/23/09B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New York

Eek a Mouse gave a reasonable performance and did a lot of old favorites. The audience grooved along. I saw Toots and the "Maytals" on Jul 22, and saw them before at BB Kings, about 2 mths ago. This time I was stunned at how much Toots' energy and flair had deteriorated. The previous show was not a five-star event, but seeing him at BB King this time, he really tanked. He hardly sang, and invited the audience to clap in the empty spaces, or to impromptu call-and-response singing from made up tunes. Most of his songs were shortened and finished with the predictable and boring up-tempo finale, a kind of frenzied ska beat. The show lacked continuity, with breaks in between numbers. At times neither the band nor his two "Maytals" daughters seemed to know what he was doing or what he'd be singing next. Some songs were barely recognizable because he was singing in a different register, or kinda meandered into it. As for his moves, they appeared static and tired and he just lacked the old energy. Some songs could have been new because there were palpable lulls in the audience response and energy. I was severely disappointed and annoyed and when my friend signaled he was ready to leave, i didn't hesitate. It feels like Toots is now ripping off ever-loyal fans, and he better be careful they don't turn on him and make bad press end his performing career abruptly. Maybe that's not such a bad thing.

    Toots VERY disappointing....

by onigiri on 7/23/09B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New York

This was a disappointing show. I saw Toots years ago for free in Brooklyn and he had so much energy and really engaged the audience. This time it seemed like he was just going through the motions. Maybe he's getting too old for this. Also the crowd was not great - lots of frat boys.

    Toots Was Drunk?

by NoRestForTheWeary on 7/22/09B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New York

I've seen Toots before and thought he was amazing - absolutely one of my top three best shows. Last night though, while the music was great, I think it could have been better. Frist criticism - Toots didn't sing loud enough. I could barely hear him except for during the choruses of the songs when he really sang it out loud. Second - Toots sped up almost every song half way through. For the first few songs it was cool but it got kind of old. I'm glad I saw him, but I don't think I would see him again so as not to tarnish that first show I saw.

    TOOTS WAS TIGHT!

by deaneman on 7/22/09B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New York

ONCE AGAIN TOOTS AND THE MAYTALS DIDNT FAIL TO THOROUGHLY ENTERTAIN THE AUDIENCE. TOOTS DEMONSTRATED HIS MUSICAL TALENTS WITH GUITAR AND HARMONICA AND FOR A 64 YEAR OLD HE SHOWED AS MUCH ENERGY AS ARTISTS FAR YOUNGER.

    Toots rocked the rock

by Rudeboi on 7/22/09B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New York

Toots brought his usual amount of energy to the stage, dancing around and really working the crowd. That was no special feat, as everyone new the words to each song and belted them out with gusto. The dance frenzy, typical of Toots shows, was in full force and the packed crowd seemed to eat up all the antics.

    Great Performance

by Chansen on 7/22/09B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New York

Eek-a-Mouse and Toots and the Maytals put on a great performance last night. Interacting with the crowd, they seem to really be enjoying what they do. Seeing them live is always a treat and this was no exception.
