About

Hailed as "one of the best acoustic guitarists in the world" by NPR's World Cafe, Tommy Emmanuel got his start at the age of six, when he first began touring his native Australia with his family's band. As a teenager, he earned a reputation as a highly sought after sideman and session player, and by his early twenties, Emmanuel was playing on chart-topping hits and performing with acts like Air Supply and Men at Work. Inspired in part by his hero, Chet Atkins (who would later become a friend, mentor, and collaborator), Emmanuel stepped out on his own as a solo artist in 1979, releasing the first in a string of acclaimed instrumental albums that would make him an unlikely celebrity in his home country and beyond. In the decades that followed, he would go on to headline everywhere from the Sydney Opera House to Carnegie Hall; tour with luminaries like Eric Clapton and John Denver; win a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement; perform for a televised audience of more than two billion at the Sydney Olympics; and collaborate with a who's who of fellow guitar greats, including Les Paul, Mark Knopfler, Joe Walsh, Richard Thompson, Jason Isbell, and Billy Strings.

Recorded in just four days, Emmanuel's latest album, Living In The Light, stands as the most daring--and most rewarding--collection in the globetrotting fingerpicker's remarkable catalog, fusing his pop, jazz, classical, and roots influences into a virtuosic masterwork as exhilarating as it is intimate.

  • What a gift he has to share!

    by George G on 7/23/23Rating: 5 out of 5

Blew down from MB for some quick shopping at the markets, early dinner at Vickery's, and Tommy. Didn't realize Richard Smith was opening and closing with Tommy, but what a show. The skill and practice they present is just fantastic. Tommy silences me with his gift. So happy my family could experience the #1 acoustical guitar player in the world.

  • Amazing night of talent and showmanship

    by atkins902 on 7/23/23Rating: 5 out of 5

Tommy Emmanuel is the real deal of the almighty guitar fretboard: talented, polished, soulful yet flashy, humble and very appreciative of those who have gone before him. If you are a novice guitar player, you will leave inspired to try. If you are a veteran player, you will lament the sins of time past that you could have been practicing. If you are a music fan, your ears are in for a night of auditory delight with the standards of Americana seasoned with influences from all over the world. There is something for everyone and the opener, Richard Smith, is the Australian Drew Carey of guitar finesse and parlor humor. Together onstage, these guys are unbeatable for great entertainment to put a smile on your face and involve the audience.

  • Awesome experience

This was a guitar performance highlight! I was astounded by the awesome strumming and percussion sounds coming from the guitar. In some instances what I watched was almost unbelievable. I could attend many more performances by Tommy Emmanuel.

  • Tommy & Richard Hit it out of the Park

Another thoroughly enjoyable and remarkable performance by Tommy Emmanuel. I was also thrilled to see Richard Smith perform live for the first time.

  • Great performance in a stellar venue

    by daa2202 on 7/23/23Rating: 5 out of 5

I've listened to Tommy Emmanuel for many years now but this was my first chance to see him - and he did not disappoint. Stunning guitar playing - I didn't hear one bum note the entire night - and very entertaining. The opening act - another guitar player from Australia named Richard Smith - was also excellent and Tommy brought him back on stage near the end of the show and they did a few beautiful duets. All in all, a wonderful concert and seeing Tommy is highly recommended if you appreciate masterful musicianship. (P.S. - yes, I'm also a guitar player, but my wife does not play and she also thought it was excellent.) Also, the Charleston Music Hall in Charleston SC is a terrific venue - excellent quality sound and not a bad seat in the house.

  • He's The Best

by Louis on 3/13/23Amaturo Theater at Broward Center - Ft LauderdaleRating: 5 out of 5

Tommy Emmanuel is simply the best guitarist, period, end of story. Pick whomever you like, and Tommy blows them away. He's a freak of nature demonstrating how he can play bass, lead and rhythm simultaneously.

  • Awesome music...

by Howard on 3/13/23Amaturo Theater at Broward Center - Ft LauderdaleRating: 5 out of 5

Goes beyond a guitarist's appreciation...Tommy makes music out of every sound you can coax out of a guitar! And Richard Smith as an opening act was also awesome!

  • Tommy Emmanuel is a Wizard

by David T on 3/13/23Amaturo Theater at Broward Center - Ft LauderdaleRating: 5 out of 5

Tommy Emmanuel is a spectacular guitarist. He's also a great showman. The opening act Richard Smith is also a brilliant guitarist and their duets were quite inspiring.

Tommy Emmanuel stands among the greatest guitarists you’ll ever see. And the Amaturo Theatre at Broward Center is a beautiful room with great acoustics.

  • Fantastic!

by Guitar Noodler on 3/13/23Amaturo Theater at Broward Center - Ft LauderdaleRating: 5 out of 5

Tommy Emmanuel is among the best guitarists ever. Although he had a sore throat, he gave a superlative display of musicianship and the audience could tell how much he enjoyed playing for us. Despite his illness, he told several stories that everyone found funny. He often promotes other guitarists and his guest for the night was Richard Smith, another virtuoso fingerpicker.

  • Truly amazing talent

by Amanda on 3/13/23Amaturo Theater at Broward Center - Ft LauderdaleRating: 5 out of 5

Tommy Emmanuel is a true artist. The entire show was engaging. He is so talented. We even liked Richard Smith who opened the show.

  • Spectacular tour de force by Tommy Emmanuel

by PippaM on 3/13/23Amaturo Theater at Broward Center - Ft LauderdaleRating: 5 out of 5

This was an amazing performance. Tommy is an outstanding musician and performer. "Superhuman" was overheard in the lobby :) The theater is also excellent because it's not too big, the seats are on an incline so everyone has a good view and there is plenty of legroom. It was packed and practically every song got a standing ovation. Richard Smith opened for Tommy and he, too, is an amazing guitarist. The finale was the two of them doing duets. We had a wonderful evening <3

Just awesome, awesome, awesome. Smith was also incredibly talented. However he needs someone else to dress him.

  • World class picking!

by John on 3/12/23Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra BeachRating: 5 out of 5

Tommy Emmanuel is quite an entertainer and put on such an enjoyable, fascinating performance! I was grinning the whole time, and this was with Tommy not feeling the best and having some voice trouble. Tommy's guitar did all the talking necessary! He traded and shared stage time with Richard Smith, another world-class acoustic guitarist. What Tommy is on the steel string, Richard is at the top on the nylon string guitar. To see two of the top guitarists in the world on the same stage was tremendous. Go see these gentlemen!

  • Perfection Understatement

by Old Folkies on 3/12/23Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra BeachRating: 5 out of 5

Tommy E. wasn't feeling great and had nearly lost his voice but even so, his performance was outstanding! Have been lucky to see him several times and somehow he just keeps getting better and better! So grateful to him for delighting his fans with such a memorable evening chock full of love, amazing talent, and thrills! And really appreciate how he mentors and collaborates with other artists. He's just phenomenal! We had a blast and sincerely hope he's on the mend! Only drawback to the perfect evening was how closely packed the seats are at Ponte Vedra Concert Hall. But everyone involved was super courteous and welcoming!
