About

Hailed as "one of the best acoustic guitarists in the world" by NPR's World Cafe, Tommy Emmanuel got his start at the age of six, when he first began touring his native Australia with his family's band. As a teenager, he earned a reputation as a highly sought after sideman and session player, and by his early twenties, Emmanuel was playing on chart-topping hits and performing with acts like Air Supply and Men at Work. Inspired in part by his hero, Chet Atkins (who would later become a friend, mentor, and collaborator), Emmanuel stepped out on his own as a solo artist in 1979, releasing the first in a string of acclaimed instrumental albums that would make him an unlikely celebrity in his home country and beyond. In the decades that followed, he would go on to headline everywhere from the Sydney Opera House to Carnegie Hall; tour with luminaries like Eric Clapton and John Denver; win a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement; perform for a televised audience of more than two billion at the Sydney Olympics; and collaborate with a who's who of fellow guitar greats, including Les Paul, Mark Knopfler, Joe Walsh, Richard Thompson, Jason Isbell, and Billy Strings.

Recorded in just four days, Emmanuel's latest album, Living In The Light, stands as the most daring--and most rewarding--collection in the globetrotting fingerpicker's remarkable catalog, fusing his pop, jazz, classical, and roots influences into a virtuosic masterwork as exhilarating as it is intimate.

  • Amazing

First time I’ve seen Tommy Emmanuel in concert. I’ve seen hundreds of bands/musicians in 50 years of concert going. Emmanuel is one of the greatest (the greatest?) acoustic guitarists I’ve seen, in terms of technical ability and musical breadth. Amazing performance.

Best acoustic guitarist on the planet! NO ONE explores the sonic and rhythmic range of the instrument like Tommy Emmanuel!

Beautiful venue; like a living room. Wonderful show by humble virtuosos.

  • Brilliant guitar players

Tommy Emmanuel and his opening act Gareth Peirson are brilliant guitar players and engaging performers. Fans of blues, country and bluegrass who haven't heard Tommy Emmanuel should download his music or YouTube videos. He's a master at his craft. Gareth Peirson is a protege of Tommy's, and I would not be surprised if he's the next generation of acoustic guitar masters.

  • Another Stellar Performance

Tommy Emmanuel is a soulful, dynamic, multi-faceted musician. Run, do not walk to your next opportunity to see his show

  • Unbelievable, as always!

by Diana Krall Fan on 4/19/22Carolina Theatre - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

Tommy Emmanuel was awesome as always, and the icing on the cake was the guest appearance of Mike Dawes at the end! A duet of Nirvana no less!! Tommy is always just breathtaking. The ultimate combination of artistry and technical ability. It is a moving and emotional experience to see him in concert.

  • Incredible concert

by Steve on 4/19/22Carolina Theatre - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

I don't normally give 5 stars, but this was 5 stars. What incredible talent and a great place to see a concert. I don't think there's a bad seat in the place. Small venue shows are the best. I wish more top talent would do small venues. It reflects on these artist that they truly love what they are doing and that they are not in it just for the mega show and the money.

  • Awesome performance

by Ben on 4/19/22Carolina Theatre - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

Tommy Emmanuel’s performance was out of this world! The man is incredibly talented and yet very humble and funny. Richard Smith who I didn’t know was amazing as well, and it was magical seeing them perform together. Even my wife who is not into guitar had a great time!

  • Mentality & Music of Chet & Jerry, Heart of a Rocker

by Jeff on 4/19/22Carolina Theatre - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

Every time I see him I think it can't get any better, but it does. Tommy is also massively generous in bringing other talented guitarists to the public eye. Tommy's concerts are pure joy. What a gift he is.

  • Awesome venue and performance

It was my first time visiting the Carolina Theater and seeing Tommy Emmanuel live. I know he's one of the greats, but man, seeing him in person was just mind blowing. TE put on an amazing show. The 6 hour drive was totally worth it. TE is a class act and absolutely worth seeing live. Will try again next time.

  • Spectacular showman Tommy Emmanuel!

by LoveALaugh on 4/19/22Carolina Theatre - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

I went to see Tommy play guitar, the way only Tommy can, because my husband is a big fan. I was not familiar with Tommy prior to the event. All I can say is WOW! What an amazing talent he is. He made his guitar sound like an entire band. He has such great energy and puts on a dazzling show. I would definitely go to see Tommy perform again. Phenomenal!

  • Tommy Emmanuel - CGP over the top!! 100 STARS

by mjpq on 4/19/22Carolina Theatre - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

This man, this phenomenal musician, this incredible entertainer...he rocked my boat, and then some. This was my 3rd Tommy E. concert...he just keeps getting better and better. I'm a guitar player and musician myself but this guy...where did he come from?!?! His off-the-chart talent and entertainment started the second he stepped on stage until you saw his coat tails as he was walking off behind the curtain. He draws in a crowd like I've never seen before and keeps the audience mesmerized every second of his performance. HE IS ONE OF A KIND !!! A true master!

  • One of My Favorites... EVER

by Erica on 4/19/22Carolina Theatre - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

I don't quite understand how one man with an acoustic guitar can evoke such emotion in me, but this concert was astounding. No special effects, no dancers, no lasers. Just a guy and his instrument. The only word to describe it is magical. I would encourage anyone to go see Tommy. He is AH Mazing.

  • Guitar Hero

    by P. G. on 4/19/22Carolina Theatre - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

Fingerstyle champion Richard Smith opened the show, then Tommy played solo for almost 2 hours. He brought Richard back for a few duets, then played 2 songs with surprise guest Mike Dawes. There aren't too many places to hear Merle Travis, Jerry Reed, the Beatles, Sting and Nirvana all in the same setlist. As expected, guitar excellence to a sold out audience.

  • Fabulous Concert, The Seats Sucked And Hurt!!!

by DrJon on 4/18/22Jefferson Theater - CharlottesvilleRating: 4 out of 5

Tommy and his guests were wonderful! I was in the third row center and as a concert it could not have been better. The three men played their hearts out, were technically brilliant, and all had good senses of humor and connected with the audience very well. However, at 55 dollars plus, the seats were extremely uncomfortable, far too close together, as every seat was shared with three people, and without complete backs there was no support and after an hour it was difficult to remain comfortable. I would have preferred to pay ten dollars more so to have had a seat designed and made for today's adults. My wife said the same thing and refuses to ever go back to the Thomas Jefferson Theater again unless the seats are changed and there are fewer per row.

  • Outstanding

by TME on 4/18/22Jefferson Theater - CharlottesvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Outstanding concert - the combination of Richard Smith and Tommy Emmanuel on the same stage was more than worth the price of admission. They both keep the audience engaged and Tommy Emmanuel’s talent is off the charts!!

  • What a show!

by TommyisGOAT on 1/30/22Balboa Theatre - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

It was my wife’s first time seeing Tommy Emmanuel! My wife and a were not disappointed. The first act, Mike Dawes, was just spectacular. He had a cover of All Along the Watchtower that was just awesome! Then Tommy came on and just cemented his roll as the greatest of all time! Both men were awesome and I would definitely go see both again!

  • Met my idol.

by Johnnieg on 1/26/22House of Blues Anaheim - AnaheimRating: 5 out of 5

Never been to the HOB before. Had a great dinner before the concert. Don't know how I lucked out but the first 25 or so were let in early for a meet and greet. I got to meet the best acoustic guitarist in the world. Something I will never forget.
