About

Hailed as "one of the best acoustic guitarists in the world" by NPR's World Cafe, Tommy Emmanuel got his start at the age of six, when he first began touring his native Australia with his family's band. As a teenager, he earned a reputation as a highly sought after sideman and session player, and by his early twenties, Emmanuel was playing on chart-topping hits and performing with acts like Air Supply and Men at Work. Inspired in part by his hero, Chet Atkins (who would later become a friend, mentor, and collaborator), Emmanuel stepped out on his own as a solo artist in 1979, releasing the first in a string of acclaimed instrumental albums that would make him an unlikely celebrity in his home country and beyond. In the decades that followed, he would go on to headline everywhere from the Sydney Opera House to Carnegie Hall; tour with luminaries like Eric Clapton and John Denver; win a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement; perform for a televised audience of more than two billion at the Sydney Olympics; and collaborate with a who's who of fellow guitar greats, including Les Paul, Mark Knopfler, Joe Walsh, Richard Thompson, Jason Isbell, and Billy Strings.

Recorded in just four days, Emmanuel's latest album, Living In The Light, stands as the most daring--and most rewarding--collection in the globetrotting fingerpicker's remarkable catalog, fusing his pop, jazz, classical, and roots influences into a virtuosic masterwork as exhilarating as it is intimate.

  • Tommy was AMAZING! Venue - not as much

by Marie C. on 1/26/22House of Blues Anaheim - AnaheimRating: 4 out of 5

The Concert performance with Tommy Emmanuel and Joe Jorgensen was amazing! Incredible! Seen Tommy before and still continues to amaze us. We wanted to buy merchandise and luckily we went searching because there was just a small table way off in a corner! BUT....tix said show was at 7pm - it really started at 8pm. Realized something was off when I kept reading that the House of Blues Anaheim - doors OPEN at 7pm (??) LONG line to enter the venue in order to check vaccination cards and go thru security, check purses, etc. . Line did move quite quickly though. Our tix were on the floor, 6th row, off to the side a bit. We made it work even though PACKED IN like sardines with no elbow room at all between the slightly padded folding chairs. And with Covid.... Said masks were REQUIRED but they were not enforced AT ALL! Not even an announcement about it. Just a small sign. 3 guys sitting next to me - no masks. Couple on the other side of us - no masks. So many maskless people that it made me anxious. Needed to be more space between rows of folding chairs. No way to get out of your row unless everyone else exited as well. And with no slant to the floor, it was often difficult to see. But like I said, show itself was OUTSTANDING. Ate at House of Blues restaurant next door before the show and it was excellent!

  • Tommy was Amazing!

by DJ on 1/26/22House of Blues Anaheim - AnaheimRating: 4 out of 5

I gave 4 stars because the purpose was Tommy and he was amazing! The venue had I known it would of been so uncomfortable I would of chosen San Diego over Anaheim HOB. I should of just stood the entire time it would of been better.

  • EPIC

So, we all know what hoops you have to jump through in these times of medical and physical insecurity prior to seeing any public performance by anyone. I was SO THANKFUL that Tommy Emmanuel's Anaheim show wasn't canceled as it was actually one of only a handful of ventures outside of groceries and such in the last 2 years! Also, as I had been waiting to see this Australian Virtuoso for quite some time, and purchased the Meet&Greet VIP seats for the first time ever. IT WAS WORTH THE WAIT, THE TIME, AND TROUBLE as Tommy's effusive persona and uncontainable joy of not only getting to perform, but SHARING his fretboard mastery with anyone who but asks him. Borrowing another fan's guitar brought for Tommy to sign, he gave me a 4min. one-on-one tutorial on artificial harmonics, as I immediately asked how HE made his guitar sound like a harp on meeting him. NOT a harmonica- a harp. Showing me the technique with a few variations and intimating his eq secrets, he finished with "Will you remember that?" "Yes" I said. What followed was a tour-de-force as he hit the stage for nearly 2hrs. with high point after high point- a percussion interlude performed with one drum brush, the mic and mic stand, and every part of his guitar, fer cryin' out loud! - and heartfelt, genuine appreciation to everyone coming out to see him under all these same conditions... With Ms. B taking care of all our libation requests, this evening will never be forgotten as a seminal show out of the hundreds I have attended in my life. Brava!

Tommy is one of the most talented musicians of our time. I've been to dozens of concerts and performances in my life, but he is a true showman in every sense of the word...and his humble spirit allows him a connection with his audience unlike any other. It's easy to see why he is celebrated as a guitar genius unmatched by any other.

Tommy has spent his entire life being a guitarist and entertainer and has reached the pinnacle in my opinion. I don’t know how the show could have been better. And he shows no sign of slowing down. Already looking forward to the next time he plays in So. Cal.

  • Spectacular Show

by JDDG on 1/25/22Oxnard Performing Arts Center - OxnardRating: 5 out of 5

I've loved Tommy Emmanuel for years, but never had the opportunity to see him. He didn't disappoint. And.......to have Mike Dawes as a bonus......my mind was blown. My only complaint, is that Mike Dawes wasn't on the bill and I only found out from someone in the lobby that he was playing while I was out front waiting for the show to start. Having said that........they were a perfect match and I loved seeing them play a few tunes together. Also want to thank TE and MD for their YouTube lesson generosity. As a 71 year old guitar player, I couldn't have enjoyed the show more. I highly recommend.

by Michala on 1/25/22Balboa Theatre - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

This was my first time going to see Tommy Emmanuel and he really is the worlds best guitar player! We were fortunate enough to see this man in concert and what made it so special and memorable was we were staying at the same hotel as him, and met him in the lobby. He’s very nice and we had such a great conversation with him.

  • Venue issues

by Ted on 1/24/22Balboa Theatre - San DiegoRating: 3 out of 5

The venue did not tell the audience that video/photography was prohibited. Consequently the ushers were continually coming down the aisles telling people to stop recording. VERY VERY DISTRACTING while trying to watch and listen to the performance.

  • None better

by Dave on 1/24/22Balboa Theatre - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

Another amazing show by IMHO one of the best ever. Tommy plays many different types of songs, all with his own unique style and virtuosity. If I could only play 1/1000 as well as he plays, I'd be a very happy guitarist. His laying makes me want to burn all my guitars. I'll never play as well as he - but then few ever will. Mike Dawes was a good complement to Tommy as their styles are similar in some ways, but worlds apart in others. Mike is excellent and another unique player.

  • Great concert

No fluff or special effects - just great guitar playing.

  • Certified guitar player

If you play, make sure you are prepared. Hopefully he will inspire you. Watch and listen in awe! He is the greatest living guitar player.

by Bill on 1/24/22Balboa Theatre - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

Certainly one of the best, if not the best, acoustic guitar player in the world (ever). It was a great pleasure to watch someone who has truly mastered their craft. And he seems like a very humble person who simply enjoys making people feel happy.

  • Great Show, Lousy Advertising

by GrizzlyBeast on 1/23/22Oxnard Performing Arts Center - OxnardRating: 5 out of 5

With Tommy Emmanuel you could never have anything than a spectacular show. His skill and personality are incredible. Mike Dawes was an excellent complimentary act…but… What’s with the poor communication of the start times? Even the warm-up act commented that he didn’t know if he was to start at 7:00, 7:30 or 8:00. The tickets said 8:00. Online it said the doors opened at 6:00, the warm-up started at 7:00 and Tommy would start at 8:00. We got there at 6:50, the MC started talking at 7:25 and Dawes came out exclaiming his confusion. Subsequently there were strays wandering in all during his performance and at the start of Tommy’s act.

As always Tommy does not disappoint! He is a true showman not to mention his amazing guitar playing. I am truly looking forward to going to one of his guitar seminars one day. Don’t know how he keeps up his schedule. You can ditch the smoke next time.
