About

Hailed as "one of the best acoustic guitarists in the world" by NPR's World Cafe, Tommy Emmanuel got his start at the age of six, when he first began touring his native Australia with his family's band. As a teenager, he earned a reputation as a highly sought after sideman and session player, and by his early twenties, Emmanuel was playing on chart-topping hits and performing with acts like Air Supply and Men at Work. Inspired in part by his hero, Chet Atkins (who would later become a friend, mentor, and collaborator), Emmanuel stepped out on his own as a solo artist in 1979, releasing the first in a string of acclaimed instrumental albums that would make him an unlikely celebrity in his home country and beyond. In the decades that followed, he would go on to headline everywhere from the Sydney Opera House to Carnegie Hall; tour with luminaries like Eric Clapton and John Denver; win a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement; perform for a televised audience of more than two billion at the Sydney Olympics; and collaborate with a who's who of fellow guitar greats, including Les Paul, Mark Knopfler, Joe Walsh, Richard Thompson, Jason Isbell, and Billy Strings.

Recorded in just four days, Emmanuel's latest album, Living In The Light, stands as the most daring--and most rewarding--collection in the globetrotting fingerpicker's remarkable catalog, fusing his pop, jazz, classical, and roots influences into a virtuosic masterwork as exhilarating as it is intimate.

  • High expectations - exponentially exceeded!

by David H on 1/19/23The Joy Theater - New OrleansRating: 5 out of 5

The entire event, from ticket purchases, to seating, to parking, to venue, and to the performances was incredible. I’ve wanted to see Tommy Emmanuel live since first being told about him a number of years ago. I started playing guitar about 3 years ago and immediately wanted to learn fingerstyle. The concert was an incredible experience and we sat 4th row near center stage. Gareth and Tommy were spot on and put on quite a show. The venue was perfect for such an incredible experience. It was like they were sitting in my living room just playing for us. I’m ready for next time already!

  • Fabulous show!

Tommy Emmanuel is spellbinding. Combine that with the beautiful Tennessee Theater as the venue and you have a home rum. This was the second time to see TE. He is so entertaining AND engaging. We got extra treats for being introduced to Garteh Pearson, who is amazing in his own right, and bassist Daniel Kimbro for a set with TE. It is wonderful that Tommy so generously promotes other musicians, and has a good time doing so! A humble class act no matter how you look at him. Phenomenal show!!!

  • What a show!

by Rock On on 1/17/23Lexington Opera House - LexingtonRating: 5 out of 5

The nearly full Lexington Opera House was treated to a fantastic performance by opening artist Gareth Pearson, followed by Tommy Emmanuel! Gareth Pearson plays solo guitar in a style similar to Tommy Emmanuel, and did a phenomenal job warming us up for the main event. Tommy was smiling from start to finish, while playing his trademark fingerstyle guitar. Highlights were many, including a handful of songs he dedicated to Jeff Beck who had died the day prior. Tommy interacted with the audience throughout his performance, even asking for requests. Tommy Emmanuel's playing seems almost impossible. I was honored to hear him, and will do whatever it takes to see him again!

Visiting from Boston. Absolutely beautiful theater. First time there. Came just for a show. Never knew of Tommy Emmanuel till I looked him up after reading he was performing thst evening. • Fantastic!

by Ott and Lisa on 1/16/23Tennessee Theatre - KnoxvilleRating: 5 out of 5

2nd time I saw Tommy Emmanuel. Seems he keeps getting better and better. Really like how he mentors younger musicians. Tommy earned the CGP designation. I am not sure if Chet Atkins started the Certified Guitar Player designation or if it was Lynn Clapp but Tommy has to be the remaining top guitarist in the world.

  • So delightful

  • How to "overheat" a guitar

by MarkInKY on 1/15/23Lexington Opera House - LexingtonRating: 5 out of 5

We have seen Tommy Emmanuel before and very impressed with his skills. At some points you wonder why the guitar does not catch fire from overheating. He is very personable and entertaining beyond his guitar skills. This concert had Gareth Pearson as a special guest. I was not sure if anybody could match Tommy's skills but Gareth matches up pretty well. His rendition of "Billie Jean", the Michael Jackson hit was great, including his little Moonwalk. He can also play a guitar like a banjo with all 5 fingers picking. If you like good guitar playing go see these guys together in some of their concerts in early 2023 or anytime individually.

  • Best ever !

Way beyond my expectations! Hope he returns soon!

  • One MAGICAL evening

by Cyd on 1/15/23Tennessee Theatre - KnoxvilleRating: 5 out of 5

When you take a gorgeous venue, The Tennessee Theater, add a sprightly Gareth Pearson for the warm up, follow with the extraordinary Tommy Emmanuel's over-the-top mastery, there's just one word: magical. Every note these gentlemen played was pure, perfection, and pleasure.

  • One of the best experiences of my life.

    by Carl B. on 1/15/23Tennessee Theatre - KnoxvilleRating: 5 out of 5

I felt a genuine sincerity when Tommy said that WE were his drug of choice. Besides his obvious talent that oozes from every pore in his body, I truly believe that he loves performing so much that even if he were not paid a single dime, he would still perform to the best of his ability. He is an inspiration to me. His ability is awesome, his original music is moving, and his attitude toward his fans is unquestionably genuine. I wish I could meet him some day.

  • Tommy and Gareth - Wonderful

by Zippy on 1/15/23Tennessee Theatre - KnoxvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Beautiful music so well performed. Enjoyed the music and the showmanship of both Tommy Emmanuel and Gareth Pearson. So incredible that people can play that well. The only knock is the volume was way high. My sound meter hit all the way to 110db and for most of the show was around 95db. That can cause damage to hearing. I had my fingers in my ears partway in because I value my hearing.

  • Awesome!

by RR on 1/15/23Tennessee Theatre - KnoxvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Tommy is an amazing guitarist, I think the best acoustical guitarist in the world, but he is also very humble and had a Welsh guitarist open for him and a local Bass player, who was also awesome play some with him. All of this in the beautiful Tennessee Theatre. He also did a tribute song for Jeff Beck, who he said was one of his first inspirations. What a Show!

  • Gareth and Tommy continue to Amaze!

by Will and Ben on 1/15/23Tennessee Theatre - KnoxvilleRating: 5 out of 5

We had the meet and greet, Tommy took his time greeting each of the VIPs. When I came to return, my son had brought his guitar, and he asked me some questions about one of his songs. He was trying to learn, Tommy showed him everything. And then let him play a song for him. he is always so kind and genuine and his music and the show for both Gareth who opened and of course Tommy were both amazing and we really enjoyed it .

  • Great Concert

by Hank on 1/15/23Tennessee Theatre - KnoxvilleRating: 5 out of 5

The opening performer, Gareth Pearson, was very entertaining and good. Also the local upright base player that joined Tommy was great. Tommy himself was amazing, and what energy! He really gives his all to the audience. Great!!!

A Tommy Emmanuel concert is a real treat! It’s part stand up comedy, part guitar lesson, and all fun! Tommy Emmanuel is one of the most amazing guitarists alive and you owe it to yourself to check him out if he’s anywhere close to you . Seeing him live was a life goal achieved for me and I would recommend it to everyone!
