About

Hailed as "one of the best acoustic guitarists in the world" by NPR's World Cafe, Tommy Emmanuel got his start at the age of six, when he first began touring his native Australia with his family's band. As a teenager, he earned a reputation as a highly sought after sideman and session player, and by his early twenties, Emmanuel was playing on chart-topping hits and performing with acts like Air Supply and Men at Work. Inspired in part by his hero, Chet Atkins (who would later become a friend, mentor, and collaborator), Emmanuel stepped out on his own as a solo artist in 1979, releasing the first in a string of acclaimed instrumental albums that would make him an unlikely celebrity in his home country and beyond. In the decades that followed, he would go on to headline everywhere from the Sydney Opera House to Carnegie Hall; tour with luminaries like Eric Clapton and John Denver; win a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement; perform for a televised audience of more than two billion at the Sydney Olympics; and collaborate with a who's who of fellow guitar greats, including Les Paul, Mark Knopfler, Joe Walsh, Richard Thompson, Jason Isbell, and Billy Strings.

Recorded in just four days, Emmanuel's latest album, Living In The Light, stands as the most daring--and most rewarding--collection in the globetrotting fingerpicker's remarkable catalog, fusing his pop, jazz, classical, and roots influences into a virtuosic masterwork as exhilarating as it is intimate.

  • Tommy Emmanuel - The finest guitar alive today

by MrTom on 9/17/09B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

I have never ever seen such precision, speed, and amazing talent. I have seen many shows with many performers, but never in my life have I seen such an amazing talent. It's hard to believe he does this every night 360 shows a year. It's fabulous that he brings local talent on stage with him. I would love to see him play with Lou Pallo, Nikki Perrot and Tommy Doyle.

  • One of the most enjoyable shows I've seen --

Tommy Emmanuel is a wonderfully talented showman who loves his work and spreads the joy!! This was my first time seeing him and wll not be my last. I cannot imagine anyone coming away without a big old happy grin and looking forward to the next one. Lovely, lovely time!!!

  • Tommy Emmanuel was awe inspiring/mind-blowing!!!

I've seen Tommy at BB King before (2007), but last night he was more virtuosic then the audience, and I, could have ever expected! People sitting next to us had never seen him live - only some You-Tube clips (which are light years from the experience of seeing Tommy live). I told them "get ready for a performance you will NEVER forget." During the show, I told Tommy ( I was about 8 feet from stage)... "Pure Joy, Tom!" - which he answered with a simple - thanks bro! Sure enough, when the concert ended, my neighbor turned to me and said "pure joy." We left the show with nothing short of pure elation. That's what Tommy Emmanuel exudes: Pure Joy!

If you are a fan of the guitar you must see Tommy. If you are not a fan of the guitar, i can guarantee that you will be entertained.

This is the second time that I have been able to see Tommy in concert. He is clearly a genius at playing the guitar, but the best part of his concerts is watching how much he enjoys performing. He is a true entertainer...

  • A true virtuoso

by Sturby on 8/9/09TN Perf Arts Ctr James K Polk Theater - NashvilleRating: 5 out of 5

The concert was amazing. He can sound like a full band on one guitar. It was nice to have several other guest artist play a few songs with him to add variety. The Perf. Arts Ctr. was a nice venue, not too big. Third row balcony and could still see and hear great.

This was one of the best concerts we have been to in recent years. Tommy Emmanuel is not only one of the best guitarists in the world today, filling the auditorium with brilliant music and amazing rhythm, he is also a gifted entertainer. Thank you Tommy for an amazing night.

I had not heard of him before the NPT special but we are glad we went. If you want to see an artist with his guitar Tommy is your man. Great stuff!

We were amazed at this man's talent. The music was incredible and kept us on the edge of our seats all evening. We also really enjoyed the anecdotes about Chet Atkins. Bring Tommy back again, PLEASE!

  • the best I have ever seen

The music that he played seemed to be played effortlessly. I have never heard anyone play so well. The energy he played with seperated him from other performers.

  • As great as ever!

by CASTAN on 8/3/09TN Perf Arts Ctr James K Polk Theater - NashvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Tommy was exceptional this year and kept the audience engaged. His stories of Chet were admirable and actually made the crowd love him even more. I'd love to see him present some new material, though. Many of his songs were the same ones played last year.

  • Tommy Emmanuel does a fabulous show!

by LaraGuitar on 8/3/09TN Perf Arts Ctr James K Polk Theater - NashvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Tommy amazed the audience with his lightning fast guitar picking and his percussion beats on the guitar. Then he played tender Beatles medley or classic Chet Atkins tunes. Truly an amazing talent. He told lots of stories about Chet too. He closed the show with Somewhere Over the Rainbow. The audience brought him back for an encore of Waltzing Matilda. The show lasted more than 3 1/2 hours.

  • a truly amazing talent

by antique on 8/3/09TN Perf Arts Ctr James K Polk Theater - NashvilleRating: 5 out of 5

He has been called one of, if not the greatest picker of all time, and we would agree after this concert. He really owned this audience after one song and nobody wanted to leave. He really gets into the whole crowd with his style and personality and this was absolutely one of our all time favorite concerts. We will never miss him again in this area....

We have seen Tommy about 5 times in Nashville and he continues to amaze us. Two years ago when he played the Belcourt we took all our neighbors who are now fans.

I am a guitar player with a litte talent, but Tommy was "off the Chain"! There was a house full of possibly jaded concert goers since we get to see the best musicians. Three times during the performance, we exploded in an enthusiastic standing ovation. I hope Tommy will make Nashville a regular stop.

  • More Than A Guitarist

by Jski on 8/3/09TN Perf Arts Ctr James K Polk Theater - NashvilleRating: 5 out of 5

I would dare say it is an understatement to label Tommy Emmanuel as merely a "guitarist". He's a bona fide musician. In addition to his talent, he's very personable while on stage. He is by far the most skilled musician I've ever seen or heard.

  • Absolutely Amazing

by puddintane on 8/2/09TN Perf Arts Ctr James K Polk Theater - NashvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Tommy Emmanuel is amazing !!!! Without a doubt the most talanted certified guitar picker in the world. His personality was a great compliment to his abilities. I wonder why he's not more well known, I will see him again when the opportunity arises.

  • Absolutely the best!

by Retro615 on 8/2/09TN Perf Arts Ctr James K Polk Theater - NashvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Never have I been so captivated by a performer. Tommy Emmanuel is delightful in every way. The most skillful guitarist on the planet and a genuine good guy and gentleman. We can thank our lucky stars that Tommy calls Nashville home.

  • TOMMY THE GREAT

Tommy Emmanuel is not only an amazing and gifted guitarist and song writer, he is a wonderful showman. He has a great sense of humor and a gift for storytelling. He is living out the passion he has been given by our amazing Creator and he shows it by his humble personality and his obvious desire to be the best he can be.
