About

Hailed as "one of the best acoustic guitarists in the world" by NPR's World Cafe, Tommy Emmanuel got his start at the age of six, when he first began touring his native Australia with his family's band. As a teenager, he earned a reputation as a highly sought after sideman and session player, and by his early twenties, Emmanuel was playing on chart-topping hits and performing with acts like Air Supply and Men at Work. Inspired in part by his hero, Chet Atkins (who would later become a friend, mentor, and collaborator), Emmanuel stepped out on his own as a solo artist in 1979, releasing the first in a string of acclaimed instrumental albums that would make him an unlikely celebrity in his home country and beyond. In the decades that followed, he would go on to headline everywhere from the Sydney Opera House to Carnegie Hall; tour with luminaries like Eric Clapton and John Denver; win a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement; perform for a televised audience of more than two billion at the Sydney Olympics; and collaborate with a who's who of fellow guitar greats, including Les Paul, Mark Knopfler, Joe Walsh, Richard Thompson, Jason Isbell, and Billy Strings.

Recorded in just four days, Emmanuel's latest album, Living In The Light, stands as the most daring--and most rewarding--collection in the globetrotting fingerpicker's remarkable catalog, fusing his pop, jazz, classical, and roots influences into a virtuosic masterwork as exhilarating as it is intimate.

  • Tommy Emmanuel - Entertainer Extraordinaire

by 1tommyfan on 8/2/09TN Perf Arts Ctr James K Polk Theater - NashvilleRating: 5 out of 5

This was my second opportunity to see Tommy Emmanuel perform live. I know it couldn't have been any more entertaining the first time than what I had the good fortune of witnessing this past Friday night in Nashville. He just seems to get better! My first introduction to Tommy's amazing entertaining abilities came via channel surfing across a PBS channel, one night early last year. After sharing that performance with a co-worker, who plays guitar, my co-worker's statement was, "I've got a new idol!" Both of us were in the audience of Tommy's show in Nashville last year, enjoying every minute. The most infectious thing in enjoying Tommy's performances, is just seeing how much he enjoys what he is doing. And of course what he is doing is..... well, getting everything from a guitar that only he has the magic to be able to do. WOW!!!!! His comradery and rapport with his audience makes you feel as if he was one from the audience who just got up there. I raise the question that many of Tommy's other fans have, ' how can a man that has the talent, ability, and likability that Tommy has, seemingly remain so unknown to the masses?' I know he is known world-wide, just look at his tour schedule. Somehow the Leno's and Letterman's have missed out on a good thing. Maybe that's it, Tommy is TOO GOOD!!!!!!!

  • A great time for all

I have seen Tommy Emmanuel 2 other times in concert in Knoxville, and I have to admit that this time in Nashville was the best yet. Not only is he a great musician but he connects with this audience and has just as much fun playing as we (the audience) do enjoying watching and listening to him. I'm always amazed of how he plays the guitar, and what new ways he comes up with to get all the different sounds out of the guitar that he can get.

  • Tommy Emmanuel was amazing

by Fretjob on 8/1/09TN Perf Arts Ctr James K Polk Theater - NashvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Well, the score is settled and the verdict is in: Tommy Emmanuel is the most gifted guitarist on planet earth. I'm sure this is not news to a lot of folks. I have seen Tommy once before, back in the nineties at the old Ace of Clubs. He was great then, but it was nothing close to the show he put on last night at TPAC. From the rollicking uptempos to the beautiful ballads, he sounded like at least three pickers, with his right hand hitting the top of the guitar, sounding like a kick drum in accompaniment. And at times he sounded like the love child of Chet Atkins on steroids and Joe Pass on acid, scratching out a brushed snare sound, all the while flawlessly executing the most effortless lightening fast runs mingled with amazing chordal and bass line counterpoint. I don't think there was one square inch of the guitar that he didn't get some sound effect from. His pithy one liners in between songs had the crowd in stitches as well. And for the entire two hour plus performance, he exuded nothing but a palpable joy for his art that was infectious throughout the house.

  • Tommy Emmanuel-not from this planet!!!

by skydog2 on 8/1/09TN Perf Arts Ctr James K Polk Theater - NashvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Concert was awesome and overwhelming! Not only is Emmanuel a master musician but a madman entertainer. More joy, love and energy than any guitarist I've ever heard. The guy is a virtual time machine. Somebody should put a set of drums on stage for him to attack! Having been a pro guitar player for 42 years I would salute Tommy as one of the greatest of all time!

  • Brilliant guitarist. "Certified" by Chet Atkins.

Entertaining, and unassuming. Splendid musician, and astounding technique. Highly recommended from someone who knows the guitar.

  • Tommy Emmanuel was simply amazing

by BigTommyFan on 8/1/09TN Perf Arts Ctr James K Polk Theater - NashvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Anyone who has ever seen Tommy Emmanuel play live would have to agree that he is not just an amazing guitarist but one of the best all around entertainers performing today. He exudes the joy he has for music. He never uses a set list and actually played a few requests from the audience. (I've been playing guitar since 1986 and I do well to remember titles of songs, let alone how to play them!) He wove in various stories about his association with the late great Chet Atkins. He had guest artists play with him as well; Pam Rose, fellow CGP John Knowles, and opening act fellow Aussie Rick Price. All in all it was one of the most memorable performances I have seen in quite a while.

Unbelievable!!!! Rick Price along would have been worth the admission price, he is remarkable!!! But, to get to see them both on the same night, is simply incredible. There is no one in the world that performs like Tommy. Best money we ever spent!!! When can I go again???

Tommy is not only a phenomenal talent on the guitar, he is an incredible entertainer. His personality and story telling connect with the audience and bring the story behind the talent to life. He was attentive to the audience throughout the performance and made everyone feel a part of the night. Fantastic performance.

  • Unbelievable!

I have attended concerts and events by a wide variety of artists and groups from many different genres from California to Tennessee! As we left Tommy's performance last night, I told my husband this was by far the most excellent display of musicianship I have ever experienced! Tommy is phenomenal, and at the same time humble, genuine and delightfully entertaining. We both appreciated his generosity in sharing the stage with his guests. Rick Price was awesome! We would go to a Rick Price concert at TPAC too! My husband also noted that the acoustics of the Polk Theater were the best he had ever heard. That was a special blessing to me because he is hard of hearing, and the concert was his Father's Day gift from me! We would definitely take advantage of another opportunity to attend a Tommy Emmanuel concert. And, we look forward to returning to TPAC! Thank you so much for a fantastic evening!

  • awesome! inspired! incredibly talented!

by christmascat on 8/1/09Variety Playhouse - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

One of the most exceptionally gifted, skilled and mesmerizing musicians I have had the privelidge to watch. An extraordinary performer with an engaging, relaxed and funny manner in that quintessiantly dry, self-depricating Aussie style. At times, I laughed till I wept but throughout, my senses were riveted in childish delight and awestruck fascination. Emmanuel live is one thousand times better than youtube or video or even on his wonderful recordings; treat yourself and your friends to this must-see performer.

  • Simply Amazing

by SomeNickname on 8/1/09TN Perf Arts Ctr James K Polk Theater - NashvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Tommy Emmanuel says that Chet Atkins was his idol while growing up, but it seems a bit of Jimmy Hendrix has crept in as well. I have never heard so much music coming from one guitar! As nearly as I can tell the man only has 5 fingers on each of two hands, but at times i was sure some extra ones came out to help! It's always a pleasure to watch a musician who's both a master of his craft and who loves to play. Tommy has both traits big time! Wonderful show! Not expensive either. The Polk theatre is just the right size house for this kind of venue. If you can catch one of his shows you MUST do it. If fact, if you see one I'll wager you'll be in line for tickets the next time he is around!!

  • Just absorb....

What can you say about Tommy Emmaunuel. When you see him play, you are in the presence of GIANTS!!!! He is by far one of the GREATEST players to walk this earth. Watching him play is an inspirational moment and depressing at the same time. You are moved by his masterful playing, all the while realizing you will never be able to play like that in your life!!! LOL. This was my second time seeing him. If i'm lucky, i'll be blessed to see him a 100 more!!!! Thanks for calling Nashville home. We welcome you with open arms!!!

  • Indescribable!

by danfanatic on 8/1/09TN Perf Arts Ctr James K Polk Theater - NashvilleRating: 5 out of 5

There are no adjectives that are appropriate to describe Tommy Emmanuel's performance. Suffice it to say, he is in a class by himself, not only with his guitar playing, but with the percussion he also performs with his guitar! On top of that, he is an absolute showman, yet very humble and spiritual. If you want to be entertained to the hilt, I can't recommend him enough.
