About

Hailed as "one of the best acoustic guitarists in the world" by NPR's World Cafe, Tommy Emmanuel got his start at the age of six, when he first began touring his native Australia with his family's band. As a teenager, he earned a reputation as a highly sought after sideman and session player, and by his early twenties, Emmanuel was playing on chart-topping hits and performing with acts like Air Supply and Men at Work. Inspired in part by his hero, Chet Atkins (who would later become a friend, mentor, and collaborator), Emmanuel stepped out on his own as a solo artist in 1979, releasing the first in a string of acclaimed instrumental albums that would make him an unlikely celebrity in his home country and beyond. In the decades that followed, he would go on to headline everywhere from the Sydney Opera House to Carnegie Hall; tour with luminaries like Eric Clapton and John Denver; win a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement; perform for a televised audience of more than two billion at the Sydney Olympics; and collaborate with a who's who of fellow guitar greats, including Les Paul, Mark Knopfler, Joe Walsh, Richard Thompson, Jason Isbell, and Billy Strings.

Recorded in just four days, Emmanuel's latest album, Living In The Light, stands as the most daring--and most rewarding--collection in the globetrotting fingerpicker's remarkable catalog, fusing his pop, jazz, classical, and roots influences into a virtuosic masterwork as exhilarating as it is intimate.

  • Unforgettable show - great venue

    by Love2Fret on 9/18/09Showcase Live - FoxboroRating: 5 out of 5

Tommy Emmanuel is a genius and a master entertainer. The show, the acoustics, and the pace were top-notch. Even non-guitarists were astounded. Tommy took us on a delerious musical ride that was "inclusive", funny, and totally Ninja. No one should miss an opportunity to see him perform. Please come back to Boston soon!

  • Words can't describe.

by teldario on 9/18/09Showcase Live - FoxboroRating: 5 out of 5

As much as I'd heard and seen from Tommy Emmanuel through recordings and Youtube videos, nothing could have prepared me for what I experienced. It's shocking how much that man gets out of his instrument. I've seen many guitarists who seem to have a gift from god, but this guy is in a class by himself. Do yourself a favor and go see him next time he's in your area, especially if you're a guitar player; however, this is not just a concert for guitarists, this man puts on a show that anyone can enjoy, no matter what age or musical preference. The venue was wonderful and the crowd was fantastic. One of the best concerts I'll ever see.

  • What an amazing show

by Josephj on 9/18/09Showcase Live - FoxboroRating: 5 out of 5

This was my first time seeing an Event at Showcase live, nice venue great sound, though a bit tight to get a wheelchair through. Also my first time seeing Tommy Emmanuel. By far the best guitarist I have ever seen. The range of musical styles and techniques is incredible. He really looks like he enjoys his craft. An amazing inspirational player. Thank you for a a wonderful show

  • Tommy Emmanuel is truly amazing!

by Gflat on 9/18/09Showcase Live - FoxboroRating: 5 out of 5

Our first time seeing TE live. He is truly amongst the best guitarists....maybe ever! And an added plus was the opening performer, Rick Price, who has a great voice. Later, the two sang a couple of duets which were outstanding. The only negative was the sound system at Showcase Live, which was too loud and had too much lingering bass which seemed to "smudge" and overpower the notes. I'm listening to TE's CD "Live One", as I write this, with my home system cranked and TE's finger picking is crisp and clear - fantastic. Just let him play! I'm already looking to see TE again at a different venue to see if this artifact is fixed. Nevertheless, TE is a "don't miss" performer.

  • Tommy Emmanuel at Foxboro

by BruceA on 9/18/09Showcase Live - FoxboroRating: 5 out of 5

Tommy's performance was simply the best, most inspired, most animated, joyful, amazingly skilled display of a master guitarist/percussionist/entertainer that I've ever seen. His charm and touching stories of friends and influences plus the apparent ease with which he delivers beautifully intricate pieces was dumbfounding. I can't praise him enough. Once in your life, see Tommy Emmanuel..

  • Tommy is the Master of the Guitar!!

by Storystu on 9/18/09Showcase Live - FoxboroRating: 5 out of 5

Wow!! NO one play the guitar the way Tommy Emmanuel does, and no one ever will! Watching him is like watching a true Master working at triple speed! Then when he use the guitar as a set of drums, while still playing it and keeping it in tune, you know he has no need for a band! - Just looking at his guitars, which are worn down to the bare wood, you can see how much energy and passion he puts into his playing. Then when he does slow down, he tells wonderful stories of friends who have touched his life and who are no longer around. He then play a heart breaking song that shows you just how much he cares about them and everyone listening to him. If there ever was anyone who earn the rank of Certified Guitar Player, it is Tommy Emmanuel!!!

  • It's hard to believe the man only has 2 hands!!!!

by ladyconcertjunkie on 9/18/09Showcase Live - FoxboroRating: 5 out of 5

The way Tommy brings his guitar to life it's hard to believe he only has 2 hands and 10 digits - I found myself shaking my head and saying "How does he do that" on just about every song. Not only that, Tommy's connection to the audience makes it clear that he loves his fans and what he does. This concert is a gift!!!!! On another note... I did NOT like the venue at all and I am not likely to go there again

  • Tommy Emmanuel - there's no one better

by Bartholomew on 9/18/09Showcase Live - FoxboroRating: 5 out of 5

I've been a Youtube fan of Tommy Emmanuel for years but never thought I'd get a chance to see him live. He finally came to the Boston area and did not disappoint. He was fantastic, as was his friend and opening act, Rick Price. They played for 3 hours, it was a great show!

  • One of the virtuosos of our age

by SeagullPicker on 9/18/09Showcase Live - FoxboroRating: 5 out of 5

This was the second time I saw Tommy, and he was in absolute top form! He nailed his signature songs like Tall Fiddler, Classical Gas, Angelina, Beatles medley and the Aboriginal song, and was fully of energy and perfection throughout the show. And his newest works are even better than the classics! I particularly liked his opening act Rick Price, who kindly signed my guitar after his set. I would have given a lot to have Tommy sign it, too, but I understood that their aggressive travel schedule and his prior cardiac health concerns mean he needs to rest after the show... Maybe I'll get there early next time and catch him on the side! If you have any appreciation and respect for guitar virtuosity, this is the man to see. A humble legend in his own time, and for every right reason.

  • best guitarist on the planet

  • Tommy is King!

by DSkye on 9/17/09B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Incredible artist, incredible show! Tommy Emanuel is the preeminent accoustic guitarist of our time ... hand's down. A master artist and showman, he makes sure a good time is had by all. A wide range of songs, beautiful soaring melodies and a nonstop assault of mind-blowing riffs (that will leave even the most jaded guitar afficianao's jaws dropping) . The BB King club was a great venue. We ordered tickets from Ticketmaster a couple months before the show ... and were amazed when we arrived and they proceeded to march us down into the VIP section ... front row, center table! The tickets included an artist meet-and-greet (another welcome surprise) ... we got to talk with him afterward, get his autograph and even a picture. All around great night!!!

  • Tommy Emmanuel never fails to wow the audience!!

by mardler on 9/17/09B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

I took three people who had never heard of Tommy with me to BBKing last night. They became his fans before the end of the first set. He is a truly amazing artist who loves to entertain the audience with his musical talents. I just wish that he would perform on a Friday or Saturday so that my teenagers who love to play guitar could come and enjoy him too. Once a year is not enough for New York. Come on Tommy do I have to start flying over to Europe to see you?

  • Tommy Emmanuel is truly AMAZING!!

Great performance! He is a truly remarkable entertainer. Sounds come out of his guitar that you would not expect to hear!! Great accompaniments! All around amazing show.

  • Astounding, incredible guitar player!

by peteinnj on 9/17/09B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Tommy Emmanuel is simply the best acoustic player, and one of the very best guitar players period. Anywhere. Eric Clapton said that Tommy was the best guitar player he had ever heard. I concur. He is primarily a fingerstyle player, but he is blazing fast with a pick as well. Last night he played a half hour of jazz guitar with a noted New York guitarist, and it was one of the best performances I have ever heard. Overall he played for about 2 hours, non stop. Tommy only comes to New York about once a year; make it a point to see him live. He is better live than on YouTube, trust me. As far as BB King's, I preferred the Highline Ballroom, where he came last year. BB's is packed very, very tight, the service is good but slow, and the food while good was very expensive for basic fare. A double Absolut is 20 bucks. So bring lots of money.

  • WOW! More more more!!!!

by Swarch on 9/17/09B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

I bought these tickets for my boyfriend's birthday. He happens to be a musician. He plays guitar. I went along because I wanted to watch him enjoy the show. I really didn't know if I would enjoy it.... But I was blown away!!! I cannot express how much I enjoyed Tommy Emmanuel and his guests. I am buying tickets for another event, featuring Tommy E. for February 2010. I don't want to miss it. My boyfriend had a grin on his face the entire time the show was on. By the way, we are both in our 60's. This show was for all ages. Whether or not you are a musician or just love music, this is a must see show!

  • Tommy Emmanuel - WOW!

by dwardjava on 9/17/09B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

This was my first Tommy Emmanuel show, and I will absolutely see him many more times. First introduced to him through youtube and being a musician I was certainly impressed and expected quite a show. His performance exceeded all expectations. He is not only an extraordinary musician, he has the pulse of the crowd and venue completely under control. He was a showman, virtuoso and a mentor to his guest artists. His program was diverse, interesting and well balanced. I have never seen an audiances emotions range from excitement, awe, laughter and appreciation the way I saw last night. His pure joy in performing is clearly communicated to an audiance and returned in kind.
