About

Hailed as "one of the best acoustic guitarists in the world" by NPR's World Cafe, Tommy Emmanuel got his start at the age of six, when he first began touring his native Australia with his family's band. As a teenager, he earned a reputation as a highly sought after sideman and session player, and by his early twenties, Emmanuel was playing on chart-topping hits and performing with acts like Air Supply and Men at Work. Inspired in part by his hero, Chet Atkins (who would later become a friend, mentor, and collaborator), Emmanuel stepped out on his own as a solo artist in 1979, releasing the first in a string of acclaimed instrumental albums that would make him an unlikely celebrity in his home country and beyond. In the decades that followed, he would go on to headline everywhere from the Sydney Opera House to Carnegie Hall; tour with luminaries like Eric Clapton and John Denver; win a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement; perform for a televised audience of more than two billion at the Sydney Olympics; and collaborate with a who's who of fellow guitar greats, including Les Paul, Mark Knopfler, Joe Walsh, Richard Thompson, Jason Isbell, and Billy Strings.

Recorded in just four days, Emmanuel's latest album, Living In The Light, stands as the most daring--and most rewarding--collection in the globetrotting fingerpicker's remarkable catalog, fusing his pop, jazz, classical, and roots influences into a virtuosic masterwork as exhilarating as it is intimate.

  • Tommy Emmanuel is astounding!

by SimplyAmazed on 9/21/09The Norva - NorfolkRating: 5 out of 5

I'm not much of a concert-goer and certainly not a gushing cheerleader type, but I was astounded by what I saw of Tommy Emmanuel online via youTube clips and just had to see him in person. I figured I was seeing the highlights on youTube, and that there was no way he could keep up that level of intensity through a full two hour concert... boy was I wrong! This guy is, quite simply, a force of nature - not to be missed by anybody who loves really great guitar music or just great music in general. Can't wait to see him again.

  • Tommy Emmanuel was incredible as always!

by fanoftommy on 9/21/09The Norva - NorfolkRating: 5 out of 5

There is no one who puts on a show like Tommy! His unequaled guitar talent is amazing enough, but that's not enough for him! You can tell he wants everyone to have a great time, even if you don't especially like the guitar! He is one of the greatest musicians and performers I have ever seen. If you breathe, you need to go to at least one Tommy Emmanuel concert! Then, of course you will want to go again! Tommy always introduces his fans to new talent as well. Rick Price is an excellent singer/songwriter; his songs and the songs he performed with Tommy added much to the show.

  • Fun family frendly fantastic

Tommy is a juggernaught of non stop entertanment. A true talent and wonder to behold on the guitar. Playing everything from the clasics to blue grass he just leaves you in awe. A unique and unforgetable performance. Tommy gives his all during the performance a must see performer.

  • Tommy Emmanuel better than ever

by alvarez on 9/20/09The Norva - NorfolkRating: 5 out of 5

I saw Tommy and Rick Price in Richmond earlier this year. Both shows were GREAT, but the venue at the NORVA is far superior.

  • Tommyfest was the BEST

by linnywv on 9/20/09The Norva - NorfolkRating: 5 out of 5

I came away from this concert in AWE of this man's talents! He is the finest guitarist I have ever known and had the pleasure of viewing LIVE!!! The Norva's venue was comfortable and inviting. I would and WILL return each year as long as this excellent musician and showman returns!

  • amazing as ALWAYS! Rick Price was also fantastic!

by longtimefanoftommy on 9/20/09The Norva - NorfolkRating: 5 out of 5

The show opened with Rick Price. I had heard his name but never heard him play or sing! What a beautiful voice to go along with the great playing. I became an instant fan! Tommy, as usual, did not disappoint. He has the most amazing fingers.....on fire! Just don't know how he does it! I absolutely LOVED the duets!!! Especially the Doobie Brothers and Everly Brothers songs! The sound guy came up and provided some vocals on one song and he was quite good too! SOOO worth the money! I highly recommend seeing this incredible muscian and entertainer!!!

  • Tommy Emmanuel - Powerful & inspiring

by ronehall on 9/20/09The Norva - NorfolkRating: 5 out of 5

This is the first time I felt the need to review any concert that I have attended. I have most of Tommy's more recent CDs and all of his concert videos, yet what I experienced was so far beyond what was expecting. The joke about fastening your seatbelt is quit accurate. What I have always heard was that Tommy will give 110% to every show - this night was no exception. I drove 300 miles to see him and it was well worth it. I cannot wait to see him again.

  • Tommy Emmanuel was unbelieveable!

Wow! This is the third time that I've seen Tommy and he keeps getting better and better. I wish he'd come around monthly!!

Tommy Emmanuel is one of the best entertainers in the world. This is the first time I have seen him live, and I will say that I have never seen anything like it. Bar none, hands down, the best!! You owe it to yourself to go and see Tommy at any cost!!!

  • Un-FREAKING-Believable!!!!

Tommy Emmanuel is hands down the most gifted guitarist alive today. In addition to being a virtuoso, he clearly loves performing, and loves his audience.

  • Tommy is the MAN!

    by Merlin2 on 9/19/09Showcase Live - FoxboroRating: 5 out of 5

This was the most incredible and enjoyable show I have ever attended. Tommy's musical talent and ability to entertain is unmatched. No one, and I mean no one, could ever make you actually feel the music quite like Tommy Emmanuel does. If you went to this show and weren't screaming with amazement and joy the entire time.... please go see a doctor.

  • Seeing is believing

by musicdiva on 9/18/09Showcase Live - FoxboroRating: 5 out of 5

OMG. Can you say this is by far the best acoustic guitar player around??? Uses one instrument but makes it sound like an entire band. Aborigine song displays these talents to a whole new level. High energy, fun, exciting, hoot and hollerin' good time. Should not be missed by anyone with an appreciation for music. Also, weaved great stories into the evening, sharing moments spent with Chet Atkins, a guy from the Netherlands that gave him a 1934 Gibson Kalamazoo that sounded incredible and some backstory on why he chose to play some of the songs he chose -- gave it great context. Closed with Beatles medley, which is probably most searched on You Tube.

  • Tommy Emmanuel is a "must see"!

by JrzyBoy on 9/18/09Showcase Live - FoxboroRating: 5 out of 5

Tommy Emmanuel was fantastic! His skill as a musician, his total mastery of the guitar, his energy and ability to connect with the audience made this a fantastic show. Rick Price opened for Tommy and then joined him near the end of the show. Rick has an excellent style, a very good voice, and was an excellent compliment to Tommy's high energy that followed. You won't believe the sounds coming out of Tommy's guitar! Tommy paid homage to his mentors Les Paul and Chet Atkins, then closed the show with Rick singing songs by Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, the Everly Brothers, The Doobie Brothers, and The Beatles. You won't go wrong spending 2+ hours to see this show.

  • Tommy was Awesome!!!!!

by GuitarCarrier on 9/18/09Showcase Live - FoxboroRating: 5 out of 5

This was our first trip to the venue and seeing Tommy. We had great seats, service was fabulous and Tommy was AMAZING!!!!!!!! What a guitar player/entertainer. The "looks" he makes while playing seem to say..... "i'm having a blast. Hope you are too". Well trust me we were!!!! Looking forward to other events at this venue and DEFINITELY seeing Tommy again!

  • Tommy Emmanuel....UNBELIEVABLE!!!!

by cosmicjoe on 9/18/09Showcase Live - FoxboroRating: 5 out of 5

I have waited a long time for Tommy to do a show in New England and it was definitely worth the wait. The venue was great, the food-very good (although they could expand the menu a little bit, not many choices), the service excellent, the show...........AWESOME. Tommy is, by far, the most accomplished guitarist I have ever seen. He is the heir to Chet Atkins throne in the guitar kingdom. Ever the comsumate showman, his show was a thrilling, non-stop roller coaster ride of tones, licks, tunes, humor and sensitivity. The opener, Rick Price, has a beautiful voice set to heartfelt songs that he has crafted from years of living the human experience. He too was worth the price of admission by himself. I recommend Tommy & Rick's music and showmanship to anyone with an ear for true musical expression.

  • TOMMY EMMANUEL - BEST GUITARIST IN THE WORLD

by BobTRS on 9/18/09Showcase Live - FoxboroRating: 5 out of 5

I knew what to expect, and I was still blown away. I never thought I could call anybody the 'best guitarist in the world' - partly because there are so many different styles and each has its own masters - but I've found it fitting to call Tommy Emmanuel the best. Here's why: 1) Amazing fingerpicking technique - and equally capable with a flat pick 2) Great single note runs/riffs, be they bluesy, jazzy, or country 3) Great songwriting 4) Appropriate use of harmonic complexity 5) Aggressive approach to playing the instrument 6) Every note, every song infused with passion 7) Extreme rhythmic and percussive capability on the instrument 8) Enjoys himself immensely and makes it all seem effortless 9) A consummate showman GET TOMMY"S CENTER STAGE DVD - SEE FOR YOURSELF. BETTER YET - GO TO A SHOW - YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.
