About

Hailed as "one of the best acoustic guitarists in the world" by NPR's World Cafe, Tommy Emmanuel got his start at the age of six, when he first began touring his native Australia with his family's band. As a teenager, he earned a reputation as a highly sought after sideman and session player, and by his early twenties, Emmanuel was playing on chart-topping hits and performing with acts like Air Supply and Men at Work. Inspired in part by his hero, Chet Atkins (who would later become a friend, mentor, and collaborator), Emmanuel stepped out on his own as a solo artist in 1979, releasing the first in a string of acclaimed instrumental albums that would make him an unlikely celebrity in his home country and beyond. In the decades that followed, he would go on to headline everywhere from the Sydney Opera House to Carnegie Hall; tour with luminaries like Eric Clapton and John Denver; win a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement; perform for a televised audience of more than two billion at the Sydney Olympics; and collaborate with a who's who of fellow guitar greats, including Les Paul, Mark Knopfler, Joe Walsh, Richard Thompson, Jason Isbell, and Billy Strings.

Recorded in just four days, Emmanuel's latest album, Living In The Light, stands as the most daring--and most rewarding--collection in the globetrotting fingerpicker's remarkable catalog, fusing his pop, jazz, classical, and roots influences into a virtuosic masterwork as exhilarating as it is intimate.

  • An Evening with a Master

by Canoe on 9/27/09State Theatre, Kalamazoo - KalamazooRating: 5 out of 5

Tommy Emmanuel is an incredible guitarist! He brings a tremendous energy to the stage. If you weren't watching you would think 2 or 3 guitars were playing along with a percussion section. I have never seen someone get more music out of their guitar than Tommy. He is a real showman and regular guy. Truly an enjoyable evening!

I saw Tommy Emmanuel at the State Theater in Kalamazoo, MI. He is an incredible guitarist and an amazing entertainer. He is probably the greatest "unknown" performers in the states. I would highly recommend his show to anyone.

Having never heard him before and going with my family, I had no idea what I was getting in to. His performance was THE BEST I've ever seen. Never in my wildest dreams could I imagine someone being able to play an acoustic guitar the way he does. Being a fan of music I can't believe I hadn't heard of him until just a few weeks ago. This man is easily the most talented guitarist on Earth. Not only that, but his stage presence was energetic and humble. Tommy seemed genuinely grateful for his fans and being able to play for us. It was easy to see he was actually ENJOYING what he was doing rather than it being a routine. Great talent and great personality... a complete win. I'd see him again in a heartbeat.

  • Tommy Emmanuel is beyond belief!

by JonnyJ on 9/27/09Showcase Live - FoxboroRating: 5 out of 5

I have gone to concerts for over 35 years and seen bands like the original Led Zepplin and the original Who but I have never seen a more dynamic or compelling performance than Tommy Emmanuel. Tommy had the audience laughing, clapping, even crying and all done with just his magic connection to the guitar. Throughout the night you could see members of the crowd shaking their heads in disbelief that a performer could coax such a range of sounds out of an acoustic guitar and do it in such an entertaining way and for over two hours. You must see Tommy Emmanuel whether you are a fan of guitar or not. It will stay with you a very long time.

Awesome show. Nick Price was an added perk that added to the show more than one could hope. Tommy is one of the finest acoustic guitar players in the world and his love of what he does comes shining through each and every song he plays.

  • Tommy E at The Ark was fantastic!

by markwirth on 9/27/09The Ark - Ann ArborRating: 5 out of 5

First of all, let me say that the venue was very nice. Small and intimate. Not a bad seat in the house. Now the performer . . . WOW!!! Tommy E has to be the best or at least Top 5 best guitarists in the world. His style of guitar playing as well as his carisma with the crowd was top notch. Also, Rick Price opened his show and was also very good.

  • Tommy was phenomenal

Tommy's show was a family affair for us. I took my wife and two grown (20+) children to see him-- we all enjoyed the show.

  • Tommy Makes God Blush

by Dadzzo on 9/25/09Showcase Live - FoxboroRating: 5 out of 5

I "discovered" Tommy Emmanuel only a few months ago, thanks to Pandora. Having heard only a handful of his songs, I was unprepared for the explosion that occurred on the stage. The virtuosity of his playing was just astounding, but that's not all. The guy is a fantastic showman! He didn't merely play the guitar, he truly "played", like an energetic kid on a jungle gym. I sat with a bunch of guitar players, and several times we just burst out laughing at what he was doing, because the skill and creativity were just outrageous -- there was no other response. He seemed to laugh right along with us. I mean, this show was just so much fun for the audience, and for Tommy. He moved smoothly from raucous boogie and blues to sweet jazz and a delightful rendition of "Walking my Baby Back Home". He turned Classical Gas into a rock anthem and did an arrangement of "Over the Rainbow" that just about brought tears to my eyes. And then there's his "Aboriginal Song", an epic of drumming, scraping, plucking, and picking that is like nothing I've ever heard come from a guitar. Oh, and just when you think it's over, he flies off into a medley of incredibly arranged Beatles standards. If you have any interest in acoustic guitar music, you have to experience a Tommy Emmanuel show.

  • Tommy is ... well he's Tommy that's all I can say.

Tommyfest was incredible. His playing was unbelievable as always. His stage presence is unparalleled. He was funny, engaging, and just amazing. His tribute to Les Paul was extremely powerful. It was an unforgettable experience.

  • Tommy Emmanuel at Showcase Live Foxboro, Ma

by SteveArg on 9/21/09Showcase Live - FoxboroRating: 5 out of 5

I've been a semi-professional musician for over 40+ years. Seeing Tommy Emmanuel live at showcase Live in Foxboro, Ma was a real treat. Mr. Emmanuel is a musician's musician. He is one of the few instrumentalist’s who can pull off a one man show. He basically sound’s like a one man band. His showmanship, technique and musical presentation is extraordinary. The venue at Showcase Live was perfect for his performance with an excellent sound system and professional lighting. The concert hall is small enough to allow an intimate feeling like your right in the show. However, it is large enough to maintain the professional concert feel. Seating is based on first come first seated, so depending what section you have purchased, it is better to arrive early. Most seat are excellent with a good view of the stage. It was clean, with good security friendly waitresses and the food there was very good.

Tommy Emmanuel is absolutely exceptional. His technique is flawless and his composing is top tier as well. He plays the crowd very well too. Always entertaining. I see him every time he's in NYC.

That's what Tommy does as he performs, and that's what all who see him do in response to his AMAZIZING performances--this one no exception.

  • Spectacular!

by chesbaycruiser on 9/21/09The Norva - NorfolkRating: 5 out of 5

Tommy Emmanuel is beyond amazing! My brain had trouble reconciling what I was seeing (one man with a guitar) with what I was hearing (a "perfect storm" of notes--layer-upon-layer of blazing fast, crystal clear, music.) The opening medely of songs lasted about 20 minutes and included Classical Gas, Go to Rio and more. My 15 year old son, himself a budding guitarist, remarked that he didn't think he could physically play that fast for that long without his arms turning to rubber. Of course part of the beauty of a Tommy concert is that it doesn't matter if he's burning up the strings or he slows it down, it's always amazing, and he does it all wearing a "cat-ate-the-canary" grin, clearly happy in his element. If you've never been, go. You won't be disappointed.

  • Tommy Emmanuel "CGP"

by CGPFan on 9/21/09The Norva - NorfolkRating: 5 out of 5

CGP -- Certified Guitar Player -- is a label given to Tommy Emmanuel by the late Chet Atkins. I would just call him the best guitar player on the planet. If you don't know who Tommy Emmanuel is, check him out on YouTube. ( That's where I discovered him.) If you sincerely love the guitar, I promise, you'll love Tommy. I've been to two of Tommy's concerts now and I'll keep going as long as he keeps playing.
