About

Hailed as "one of the best acoustic guitarists in the world" by NPR's World Cafe, Tommy Emmanuel got his start at the age of six, when he first began touring his native Australia with his family's band. As a teenager, he earned a reputation as a highly sought after sideman and session player, and by his early twenties, Emmanuel was playing on chart-topping hits and performing with acts like Air Supply and Men at Work. Inspired in part by his hero, Chet Atkins (who would later become a friend, mentor, and collaborator), Emmanuel stepped out on his own as a solo artist in 1979, releasing the first in a string of acclaimed instrumental albums that would make him an unlikely celebrity in his home country and beyond. In the decades that followed, he would go on to headline everywhere from the Sydney Opera House to Carnegie Hall; tour with luminaries like Eric Clapton and John Denver; win a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement; perform for a televised audience of more than two billion at the Sydney Olympics; and collaborate with a who's who of fellow guitar greats, including Les Paul, Mark Knopfler, Joe Walsh, Richard Thompson, Jason Isbell, and Billy Strings.

Recorded in just four days, Emmanuel's latest album, Living In The Light, stands as the most daring--and most rewarding--collection in the globetrotting fingerpicker's remarkable catalog, fusing his pop, jazz, classical, and roots influences into a virtuosic masterwork as exhilarating as it is intimate.

Unbelievable artist and entertainer. Our group was blown away by him. Had seen him on PBS and have many of his CDs, but to see him LIVE was special. Will see him again in concert if he comes back to lower Michigan. This man is ONE WITH HIS GUITARS.

The concert was unforgetable. Tommy Emmanuel is hands down the best guitar player I have ever heard. He can make sounds come out of a guitar that you never thought possible. His personality, and character were both "top notch", and you could really see how much he loves, and enjoys entertaining for his audiance!

If you play acoustic guitar or think you know what an acoustic guitar can do or sound like you need to see Tommy while he is still out there doing his shows. It's the next level of acoustic entertainment.

  • Amazing Guitarist!

    by ACE46 on 9/28/09State Theatre, Kalamazoo - KalamazooRating: 5 out of 5

Outstanding performance! Had the crowd captivated from the get go. Liked the fact that the venue was small and the acoustics were good. Being a smaller place gave the show more of a one to one connection with the artist. Loved it. Audience reaction to the songs was overwhelming which I think Tommy appreciated very much. The crowd loved the show and it showed. When Tommy mentioned the Gibson Kalamazoo acoustic guitar and then played it . The crowd was impressed. All in all a very good concert , by an incredible musician. Kudos!!

Always highly entertaining and great vaule for money,he played for over 2hours and the sounds he can get from his gituar is unbelievable. Loved the way he stopped and showed the children in the audience how he got his gituar to make some of the sounds, and answered the questions yelled out by some of the audience. He also played requests from the audience. Also really loved his support act Rick Price.

  • Tommy was spectacular!

by trhunter on 9/28/09State Theatre, Kalamazoo - KalamazooRating: 5 out of 5

Kalamazoo we were blessed! If you're already into an appreciation of the great guitarists, then you probably know that Tommy is a world-renowned and award-winning member of that elite group. But after Saturday night I would place him at the top of that list. The stratospheric level of dexterity and inventiveness that he has been gifted is nothing but spectacular. Tommy Emmanuel is inarguably one of the best guitar stylists on planet Earth.

  • Amazing!!!

by Jimthefrustratedguiter on 9/28/09State Theatre, Kalamazoo - KalamazooRating: 5 out of 5

Absolutely the best guiter player I have ever heard. I attended with 5 friends who all play guiter, and we spent most of the night on our feet. Everyone was thrilled to have had the opportunity to hear this wonderful performance. The theatre is a fantastic venue and we were very happy with the price of the tickets and our seats.

  • Tommy is fantastically fun!

by Zbztster on 9/28/09State Theatre, Kalamazoo - KalamazooRating: 5 out of 5

Tommy Emmanuel has to be the best one man guitar show I've ever seen. His hands fly on the neckboard as he coaxes his guitars to sing and shout, they almost come alive. This was a truely fantastic, fun show for the whole family.

  • A Peak concert experience!

    by Elderly1 on 9/28/09State Theatre, Kalamazoo - KalamazooRating: 5 out of 5

What a great show at an equally great venue! Tommy is a terrific showman and a wide open vessel for the guitar--Hendrix, Chet Atkins, Lenny Breau and Clapton combined. The kind of show that almost anyone would love, regardless of knowledge of guitar and etc. Great sound, appreciative audience, beautiful theatre and especially touching that Tommy brought the Gibson Kalamazoo home to Kalamazoo! One of the single best concerts I've been to in 50 years. Thanks, State Theatre and Tommy!

  • Tommy Emmanual "Wow!"

by BoscoBoy on 9/27/09State Theatre, Kalamazoo - KalamazooRating: 5 out of 5

From the warm-up set to the final standing ovation this was a tremendous show. What this man can do with an acoustic guitar absolutely amazes. Probably the best show I have been to in many, many years. If Tommy Emmanual comes anywhere near you, run, don't walk and get tickets. You will be very, very happy you allowed yourself to be treated to such a beautiful performer. Thank you Tommy!!

  • Tommy Emmanuel and Rick Price - A perfect night

by Bluzwitch on 9/27/09State Theatre, Kalamazoo - KalamazooRating: 5 out of 5

What a perfect pair. Rick Price is a great opener for Tommy. Rick's voice was enchanting and he is a talent to be reckoned with. We will see him again. Tommy was not a disappointment for sure. His talent is incredible. His music brings you through an array of emotions. It's obvious that he loves what he does and feels the music. I could close my eyes and be transported to another world. What a night! The two of them on stage together was a real treat. The State Theater offers the most wonderful venue. The sound was incredible.

  • Emmanuel Catches Eye

    by cork50 on 9/27/09State Theatre, Kalamazoo - KalamazooRating: 4 out of 5

Tommy Emmanuel's show is as entertaining for the eyes as the ears. His ability with creating numerous sounds from his guitar, which go beyond simply his strings, will entertain all, regardless of their appreciation for the guitar.

  • Tommy Emmanuel is beyond cool

    by always4lions on 9/27/09State Theatre, Kalamazoo - KalamazooRating: 5 out of 5

Tommy E is more than just a phenomenal guitarist. His use of electronics makes the concert unforgettable. You feel like you are in his front room as you are blown away by his playing skills and creativity. If you are into finger style guitar, you'll love his show. If you want "Classical style" guitar, this won't be for you. If you go, be prepared to be simply blown away with amazing sounds emanating from a guitar.

  • Blown away by Tommy!

by VickyF on 9/27/09State Theatre, Kalamazoo - KalamazooRating: 5 out of 5

Both my husband and I were amazed at the skill and showmanship of Tommy Emmanuel. Even his "slower" numbers were great. We have seen Chet Atkins live at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp a few years ago, and you can see the influence of Chet on Tommy. If you like acoustic guitar you will love Tommy.

  • Tommy Emmanuel

by Bottledbravado on 9/27/09State Theatre, Kalamazoo - KalamazooRating: 5 out of 5

Aside from the theatre's exceptional acoustic qualities, this event was mind-blowing! After seeing and hearing what he played on the unforgiving acoustic guitar, I realize anything or any sound is possible on the guitar. He is also exceptionally humorous entertaining. His gestures, facial expressions, and stories made me smile. His playing is extremely dynamic for a solo-acoutic guitar player. My wife even enjoyed the show, which says a lot. This is a performer I will see again and again as long as he tours. I know mind-blowing is a cliche phase, but it really left me and others around me in awe. Several people would just spontaneously blurt things out in disbelief. It was just that unbelievable., and standing ovations occurred regularly.
