About

Hailed as "one of the best acoustic guitarists in the world" by NPR's World Cafe, Tommy Emmanuel got his start at the age of six, when he first began touring his native Australia with his family's band. As a teenager, he earned a reputation as a highly sought after sideman and session player, and by his early twenties, Emmanuel was playing on chart-topping hits and performing with acts like Air Supply and Men at Work. Inspired in part by his hero, Chet Atkins (who would later become a friend, mentor, and collaborator), Emmanuel stepped out on his own as a solo artist in 1979, releasing the first in a string of acclaimed instrumental albums that would make him an unlikely celebrity in his home country and beyond. In the decades that followed, he would go on to headline everywhere from the Sydney Opera House to Carnegie Hall; tour with luminaries like Eric Clapton and John Denver; win a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement; perform for a televised audience of more than two billion at the Sydney Olympics; and collaborate with a who's who of fellow guitar greats, including Les Paul, Mark Knopfler, Joe Walsh, Richard Thompson, Jason Isbell, and Billy Strings.

Recorded in just four days, Emmanuel's latest album, Living In The Light, stands as the most daring--and most rewarding--collection in the globetrotting fingerpicker's remarkable catalog, fusing his pop, jazz, classical, and roots influences into a virtuosic masterwork as exhilarating as it is intimate.

never been to a tommy emmanuel concert before so i was not exactly sure what to expect. i had front row seat directly infront of him so i got the maximum impact from this extremely talented artist. i was in awe for the entire show. he is absolutely one with his guitar, and he gets all that can be gotten from the guitar. thank you tommy for allowing photography becasue i now have an iphone full of your live performance. i listened to it several times on the way home (70 miles back to Costa Mesa). when you perform it is obvious that you put an intense amount of emotion into your music. ie., the song about your father, and angelina were inspiring. thank you for an exceptional evening of music. i'm looking forward to seeing your next concert. Hurry back.

You have to see this man live. There is nothing on cd or on the internet that can capture his ability. He is an AMAZING show, and his guitar playing is otherworldly! No matter what you like - metal, country, classic rock, jazz, bluegrass, classical, singer/songwriter - he appeals to EVERYONE! It is not possible to watch him play and not get completely swept up into his world of melody and toe-tapping genius!

Most amazing! If you closed your eyes you were sure there were at least two guitars in play. Or maybe a harp, or a drum, but it was always just Tommy. Really fantastic energy and beautiful guitar.

  • WOW!!!!

Tommy Emmanuel was fabulous! His virtuosity sparkled as he played over 2 hours of music to thrill the ears! Don't miss seeing him if you ever get the chance! He's a once in a million guitar player. He uses the guitar as an instrument like you've never heard before - bass, rhythm, lead, AND percussion all in one!

Tommy is truly a guitar player's - guitar player. He epitomizes how instrument can be manipulated. Strings, precussive, preciseness, clarity, and tunings came with great mastering. His stage presence in very imformal and comfortable. He incorporates some of his humor into guitar moves. Very humble, very talented and very down to earth.

I first "stumbled in" to Tommy in 2002 while in New York. My youngest son and I had tickets to David Letterman, but the called and cancelled the Labor Day taping and aired a re-run. I got on my laptop and discovered that Les Paul was, then 87 years old was play every Monday night at the Iridium Jazz Club about two blocks North of the Ed Sullivan theatre, close to our Mid Town Manhattan hotel, so I made a reservation for the early show. Tommy showed up as a guest that night. WOW! We were so impressed, we stayed for the late show, paid another $50 per head cover and enjoyed it twice. Got to talk with Tommy between shows, had my picture taken with Les and swore if Tommy ever came within 200 miles of my home town (Fort Wayne, IN) we would go! We did and were NOT disappointed! As a sometime guitar picker/songwriter, I wanted to go home and trash my beloved 1932 Martin C2, along with my Ovation, Epiphone and colector ancient Washburn! He does things on a guitar that should not even be thought of, much less attempted nor accomplished! His rapid harmonics alone are worth price of admission. When he played "Classical Gas" I whispered to my older son, "Mason Willimans, Eat your Heart out!"

  • Still in a state of AMAZEMENT!!!

by wjfisk on 10/2/09Ball State University Pruis Hall - MuncieRating: 5 out of 5

Tommy Emmanuel did things with a guitar that I have never seen before. Sometimes, with a soloist, you are left feeling like there was something missing in the performance. With Tommy Emmanuel, anyone else on stage with him would mostly have been a distraction. He doesn't need any additional musicians. He is a whole band unto himself. That's not to say it wasn't enjoyable when Rick Price joined him at the end, but it was almost like giving the audience a chance to catch its breath after the nearly 3 hours that Tommy performed solo. Tommy showed no signs of fatigue and appeared he could have played another 3 hours, no problem. However, most of the audience felt tired for him because of his incredible velocity and, at times, frenetic pace with which he played. His sheer joy and enthusiasm in his craft was infectious to everyone there. I would absolutely and eagerly go back the very next night and sit in amazement for another 3 hours if it were possible!!!

  • Jaw Dropping !!

I have seen Tommy Emmanuel several times and he never ceases to amaze me. Besides his undeniable talent, his passion and energy is completely infectious. If you are a guitarist like me, you will gain mounds of inspiration from Tommy while at the same time feeling strangely insignificant when matched against his playing. BB King is a good venue as far as supper clubs go, although this time it was so crowded, we almost didnt get a table.

  • OMG!!! Can this guy play guitar or what!!

by bearhuntinbabe on 9/30/09State Theatre, Kalamazoo - KalamazooRating: 5 out of 5

This show was absolutely amazing. I bought the tickets because I knew my husband is a fan and, while I've seen video clips of Tommy Emmanuel on YouTube, they don't even come close to what this guy is like in person. I would go again in a heartbeat!!

  • pretty amazing evening

by guitarlover on 9/29/09State Theatre, Kalamazoo - KalamazooRating: 5 out of 5

I really enjoyed the concert by Tommy Emmanuel. Overall it was what I had anticipated knowing the quality of this guitar player. The venue and perhaps my seat placement - down front far right - led to a bit too much bass in the sound system. I would suggest that mixers (the people) place themselves in various spots around the auditorium to hear what people are going to actually be exposed to.
