About

Hailed as "one of the best acoustic guitarists in the world" by NPR's World Cafe, Tommy Emmanuel got his start at the age of six, when he first began touring his native Australia with his family's band. As a teenager, he earned a reputation as a highly sought after sideman and session player, and by his early twenties, Emmanuel was playing on chart-topping hits and performing with acts like Air Supply and Men at Work. Inspired in part by his hero, Chet Atkins (who would later become a friend, mentor, and collaborator), Emmanuel stepped out on his own as a solo artist in 1979, releasing the first in a string of acclaimed instrumental albums that would make him an unlikely celebrity in his home country and beyond. In the decades that followed, he would go on to headline everywhere from the Sydney Opera House to Carnegie Hall; tour with luminaries like Eric Clapton and John Denver; win a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement; perform for a televised audience of more than two billion at the Sydney Olympics; and collaborate with a who's who of fellow guitar greats, including Les Paul, Mark Knopfler, Joe Walsh, Richard Thompson, Jason Isbell, and Billy Strings.

Recorded in just four days, Emmanuel's latest album, Living In The Light, stands as the most daring--and most rewarding--collection in the globetrotting fingerpicker's remarkable catalog, fusing his pop, jazz, classical, and roots influences into a virtuosic masterwork as exhilarating as it is intimate.

Emmanuel goot more sounds out of an old Gibson parlor tthan I thought possible. Also, he was completely entertaining, obviously enjoying life on stage. His enjoyment was infectious for the audience.

If you ever get the chance to see Tommy in person, especially in a wonderful venue like the Keswick, do it!!! I love his music and seeing him on You Tube, but in person, he was amazing. I have never seen a musician / guitarist of his caliber!

  • A Stunning Show!

We were truly amazed by Tommy's gift. A wonderful selection of styles from smooth melodies to honky tonk, to playing the guitar like a drum, making unbelievable sounds your ears have never heard and are amazed by. We think he is a guitar genious.

  • Tommy is amazing!!!

    by hschaefer1 on 6/25/10Keswick Theatre - GlensideRating: 5 out of 5

I'm a HUGE Tommy fan. I also went to the workshop the night before in Paoli. The show was great, as always. Tommy seemed more engaged with the audience than in previous shows, and I enjoyed him talking to the audience, telling a few jokes, etc. I love his guitar playing, and although I appreciate his percussion selections, they are not my favorite.

  • amazing energy!

by KristinRae on 6/25/10Keswick Theatre - GlensideRating: 5 out of 5

The energy he generates on stage is absolutely amazing. He "milks" the guitar of every ounce of music to convey a depth of feeling that is unsurpassed. Truly an artist!

  • Tommy Emmanuel is a guitar Super Hero.

by Rikc on 6/25/10Keswick Theatre - GlensideRating: 5 out of 5

I didn't know one man was capable of getting that much sound out of one instrument. Especially the guitar. Tommy Emmanuel's talent, and his willingness to share and enjoy it with us is an inspiration to all who have have seen his performance. The Keswick Theatre is the perfect place. Easy access in a quaint location offering lots of amenities. I looking forward the next event hosted at the Keswick. The experience was totally enjoyable.

  • He Just keeps getting better

by Ekimisme on 6/25/10Keswick Theatre - GlensideRating: 5 out of 5

Tommy is one of the worlds best finger stylist guitar players. Each time I see him in concert he just gets better and better. Last night was no exception. He played for about 2 hours. Even songs that I have heard him play before had a fresh sound and sometimes a new approach. What can I say --- if you have the opportunity to see him, and love guitar, don't miss him.

  • Emmanuel takes guitar playing to another level

by johnfesp on 6/18/10House of Blues New Orleans - New OrleansRating: 5 out of 5

Finding words to convey the experience of a Tommy Emmanuel concert is difficult. If you have any interest whatsoever in Tommy or in guitarists, go see him. He is a living breathing example of talent, commitment, dedication, musicality, and love of guitar playing. But it is not just guitar, he is so good that you realize the level of accomplishment humans can reach when living their dreams and passions. I have seen him perform live twice and look forward to the next time.

  • Tommy Emmanuel at House of Blues, New Orleans

by tarceneaux1 on 6/15/10House of Blues New Orleans - New OrleansRating: 5 out of 5

Tommy takes acoustic guitar playing to a different level. He is a master of the instrument. He is also a fantastic showman. His show was non-stop for 2 hours. He must have played 30 songs. My all time favorite was "Somewhere over the rainbow". Its magical how he plays the harmonics. I believe he is the greatest acoustic guitarist anywhere today. It was one of the best concerts I ever went to and I'm glad House of Blues added some seats instead of it being standing only. good job HOB.

  • Tommy Emmanuel is AWESOME!!

NO ONE plays the guitar like this man. This wasn't a concert, it was an "experience". My son gave this to me as a Father's Day gift. He is awesome as well.

Totally unbelievable that one man and a guitar can produce this symphony of music.. You must see in person to believe it. I knew Tommy Emmanuel had the reputation as the best guitarist in the world. I now believe it.

  • Like No Other Show On Earth!

by JaJireh on 6/11/10House of Blues New Orleans - New OrleansRating: 5 out of 5

The creative endeavor of Tommy Emmanuel is a full body experience! His showmanship isn't staged, but rather an extension of the music he feels as he plays ~ the intensity of which extends to his audience both in sound and energy! I was unprepared for the fullness this artist brought to the stage, yet it was easy to get involved. Tommy truly is one of a kind, and the master, on top of his game. Also, his opening show: Chase Foster. That young man has a talent for creative lyric that resonates with all ages. His sound was unique and refreshing, a perfect complementary accompaniment to Tommy's gig! BRAVO!!

  • Tommy Emmanuel is amazing

by TEfan on 2/19/10Pepperdine University - MalibuRating: 5 out of 5

My first time seeing TE live. My first time at the venue (Pepperdine - Smothers Theater) too. It was terrific. Reasonably large, but still intimate. My seat was near the front but looking around, there didn't seem to be a bad seat in the house. Parking was a bit of a mess as the attendant was not on duty when I arrived about an hour before the show. Attendant at lower kiosk was no help. Tommy played two sets with an intermission in between. I wasn't keeping track of time, but it was pretty near 2 hours of music. I don't know how he can play that long and that clean. Although he does occasionally employ a bit of electronic wizardry, it's hard to believe the sounds he produces while playing one guitar. Truly a gifted musician. Along the way he shared some stories and insights that made the evening even more enjoyable.

by mnardo on 2/11/10Pepperdine University - MalibuRating: 5 out of 5

Tommy's show is the most amazing, entertaining thing to watch. His talent is incredible. He plays with so much passion and soul, it is hard to describe. I've been to several of his shows and he always amazes me. He is a very approachable down to earth person with a God given talent and passion for what he does. Will never get tired of watching him perfom.

Absolutely incredible, wonderful performer and guitar player

  • Tommy never fails to provide!

by Soonar on 2/11/10Pepperdine University - MalibuRating: 5 out of 5

If you have seen him play before you got your money's worth. If you had not seen him perform before you were blown away. Don't know when he will be back but I'll be there! If you don't believe me search YouTube for any example of his playing and you will kick yourself for missing it!
