About

Hailed as "one of the best acoustic guitarists in the world" by NPR's World Cafe, Tommy Emmanuel got his start at the age of six, when he first began touring his native Australia with his family's band. As a teenager, he earned a reputation as a highly sought after sideman and session player, and by his early twenties, Emmanuel was playing on chart-topping hits and performing with acts like Air Supply and Men at Work. Inspired in part by his hero, Chet Atkins (who would later become a friend, mentor, and collaborator), Emmanuel stepped out on his own as a solo artist in 1979, releasing the first in a string of acclaimed instrumental albums that would make him an unlikely celebrity in his home country and beyond. In the decades that followed, he would go on to headline everywhere from the Sydney Opera House to Carnegie Hall; tour with luminaries like Eric Clapton and John Denver; win a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement; perform for a televised audience of more than two billion at the Sydney Olympics; and collaborate with a who's who of fellow guitar greats, including Les Paul, Mark Knopfler, Joe Walsh, Richard Thompson, Jason Isbell, and Billy Strings.

Recorded in just four days, Emmanuel's latest album, Living In The Light, stands as the most daring--and most rewarding--collection in the globetrotting fingerpicker's remarkable catalog, fusing his pop, jazz, classical, and roots influences into a virtuosic masterwork as exhilarating as it is intimate.

This was my first exposure to Tommy Emmanuel. This man is a true artist and entertainer quite difficult to describe. If you ever have the chance to see him Live you should make every attempt to do so. He is passionate and unforgettable. It is extraordinary to see how he connects with his guitar.

  • Tommy Emmanuel - Awesome Again !

by GuitarFan03 on 6/28/10Carpenter Theatre at Richmond CenterStage - RichmondRating: 5 out of 5

Tommy is probably the finest guitarist ever. This is a bold staement, but he certainly has the skills of Stevie Ray Vaughan, Leo Kottke, Grant Geissman and other true artists, but also is a consumate showman. It is obvious that he truly loves what he does, and the fact that he does it better than anyone else is just a bonus. Once you've seen him, all other, far more famous guitarists, are relegated to second-tier status. He is even better in person than on disc. After seeing him, you will be amazed at what he can do.

  • Tommy is a gift from God!

by FrankWarnecki on 6/26/10Carpenter Theatre at Richmond CenterStage - RichmondRating: 5 out of 5

I knew a lot about Tommy, saw his video's! Also aware of his standing in the guitar world. Whar we saw in person was unbelievable .. he is truly amazing! The crowd was in awe of his stage presence and his domination of the guitar can not be described, anyone that loves this instrument as I do should experience Tommy live. A truly unforgetable evening! Any youngster interested in guitar should see Tommy live, they will be forever inspired! I own seven guitars .. I hope someday to have them speak for me as they do for Tommy! Anyone that has ever touched a guitar or wishes they had, go see Tommy and revel in the power of this instrument! Tommy we salute you! An anniversary present we will never forget!

  • Best guitar player in the world

by jerkicd on 6/26/10Carpenter Theatre at Richmond CenterStage - RichmondRating: 4 out of 5

Everything was great. I go to see him every time he comes to Richmond. The sound last night, however, could have been better. There was too much bass in the mix and it was too loud. Thats why I gave it a 4 instead of 5, otherwise, its perfect.

  • the ultimate guitarist

by revonav on 6/26/10Carpenter Theatre at Richmond CenterStage - RichmondRating: 5 out of 5

i've been wanting to catch Tommy in concert for quite some time now, and i was not disappointed. A true musician and perfectionist on stage , he truly gives all he has and it shows in his music. i grew up listening to my dad play the thumb and finger style guitar of Chet Atkins and Merl Travis , but i really did not appreciate the difficulty involved in this style until i heard Tommy's take on it. If you are fortunate enough to see him in concert , you will leave with one thought , where does the guitar stop and the man begin, they are one. Thank again Tommy you are the greatest!! (next to my dad)

  • Tommy Rocks!

by chesbaycruiser on 6/26/10Carpenter Theatre at Richmond CenterStage - RichmondRating: 5 out of 5

As always, Tommy blew the doors off the place! A great showman and entertainer with fingers that clearly move somewhere near the speed of light. At one moment your faced with a titanic wall of sound, unbelievably eminating from from a lone gutarist on the stage, and the next you are swaddled in gentle, crystal-clear, peircingly beautiful notes. The only negative was some technical issues (way too much bass/distortion) early on, but they seemed to get a handle on it. If you've never seen him play before, and get the opportunity....DON'T pass it up. If you have seen him before, I don't have to tell you anything.

Just hearing him is not enough, you have to see him and all the things he does with a guitar. I think he has more fun playing than the audience has watching.

  • Tommy Emmanuel, CGP, AM never disappoints!

by randall13 on 6/26/10Carpenter Theatre at Richmond CenterStage - RichmondRating: 5 out of 5

Tommy Emmanuel is such a consummate entertainer that he touches everyone that hears him every time he picks up a guitar. His talent is legendary as you would expect of someone anointed by none other than the late great Chet Atkins. I always leave his shows with a sense that Tommy has given me a little bit of himself to me, not just a flawless performance, jaw dropping technique and complete command of his instrument, which he does but there is a special gift just for me. I’m sure it manifests itself on different levels for different people but there is something that passes between the artist and the audience that transcends a normal performance. You feel you are a part of the show and Tommy knows it. He treats every performance as if it could not happen without you being there. When an artist can make the worshipers feel like the worshiped that is a true gift. I submit that Tommy Emmanuel posses just such a gift and shares it with us all. Thank You Tommy Emmanuel, for sharing your gifts and making us all fell so special!

Everytime I see him play, I walk away in shock! He is amazing. One quesiton: Where does he get all of that energy? I was exhausted just by watching him! He can make a guitar do things a guitar was never meant to do. Absolutely amazing!

  • Great - Unique show and enjoyable experience

by DBandG on 6/26/10Carpenter Theatre at Richmond CenterStage - RichmondRating: 5 out of 5

I sent my parents for Fathers Day and this is what they said..."Wow! It was something you had to be there to see. Tommy is an amazing showman, a fantastic musician, extremely creative, and really puts on a show. He came on stage by jumping over a piece of equipment while holding his very beat-up guitar. I think he's in his 50's, approaching 60. Check out the You-Tube video of "Over the Rainbow" if there is one. He can make a guitar sound like a harp. If you have ever heard an orchestra play that song, with all the very intricate chord changes, he incorporates all the notes you would hear. I can hear them in my head - please make it go away! He plays sort of like Chet Atkins, who was his mentor, but goes way past that. Several different types of music, and he can sound like a whole band - just him. Most of it is very loud. He had 4 acoustic guitars there and used each for different effects. One was extremely electronic, which was done using a very special type of amplifier like the ones rock musicians use. The guitar was beat up because he uses it for a drum, and makes all kinds of sounds by rubbing the pick on the scarred surface of the wood, etc. There was another guy on for the first hour, with another guitar player, and he was pretty good too. At the end - his first name is Chase - also came out and played amplified violin, with Tommy on guitar. He also writes music and sings - writes songs. He is only 19, but plays both guitar and violin very well, and sings well too. He specializes in pop-jazz - in the Eric Clapton mode."

  • Emmanuel is spectacular!

by Terj on 6/26/10Carpenter Theatre at Richmond CenterStage - RichmondRating: 5 out of 5

When Tommy Emmanuel opened last night's show with "Classical Gas" at the Carpenter Center, I was reminded of the last time I saw a show on that very stage: Chet Atkins in 1989 or 1990. Chet played that song, too, but jokingly cursed Mason Williams for writing a song with all "those darn 16th notes!" As much as I loved Chet Atkins, Tommy blew Chet away with his version. Just an unbelievable show! And the kid that opened for him, Chase Foster, is going to be a huge start

  • Incredible performance by Tommy!

by pegnog on 6/26/10Carpenter Theatre at Richmond CenterStage - RichmondRating: 5 out of 5

I have never seen another guitar player use every square inch of the guitar to make sound. Incredible!! Thoroughly enjoyed the performance and bought two of his CDs. I would go see him again. Just amazing!!

  • I've ever smiled so much at a concert before!

by juanba on 6/26/10Carpenter Theatre at Richmond CenterStage - RichmondRating: 5 out of 5

I saw an interview with Tommy Emmanuel where he said that his purpose as an artist is simply to bring joy to people... it's not to be the most popular or make the most money... he said that if he focuses on his mission of bringing joy - everything else in his life always falls into place. Mission accomplished Tommy! The entire theater last night was full of laughs and smiles and the shared joy of this great entertainer... unforgettable and a MUST SEE!!
