About

Hailed as "one of the best acoustic guitarists in the world" by NPR's World Cafe, Tommy Emmanuel got his start at the age of six, when he first began touring his native Australia with his family's band. As a teenager, he earned a reputation as a highly sought after sideman and session player, and by his early twenties, Emmanuel was playing on chart-topping hits and performing with acts like Air Supply and Men at Work. Inspired in part by his hero, Chet Atkins (who would later become a friend, mentor, and collaborator), Emmanuel stepped out on his own as a solo artist in 1979, releasing the first in a string of acclaimed instrumental albums that would make him an unlikely celebrity in his home country and beyond. In the decades that followed, he would go on to headline everywhere from the Sydney Opera House to Carnegie Hall; tour with luminaries like Eric Clapton and John Denver; win a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement; perform for a televised audience of more than two billion at the Sydney Olympics; and collaborate with a who's who of fellow guitar greats, including Les Paul, Mark Knopfler, Joe Walsh, Richard Thompson, Jason Isbell, and Billy Strings.

Recorded in just four days, Emmanuel's latest album, Living In The Light, stands as the most daring--and most rewarding--collection in the globetrotting fingerpicker's remarkable catalog, fusing his pop, jazz, classical, and roots influences into a virtuosic masterwork as exhilarating as it is intimate.

  • Masterful

There are a handful of people in the world that possess the mastery of the guitar that Tommy Emmanuel has. At times it is as if he has more than the normal human compliment of fingers to produce the sounds of the music he plays. Every performance of his that I have seen has been filled with high energy and an evident true love for what he does. Youu WILL NOT be disaapointed!!

Amazing show! Have never seen an acoustic guitar played like that before! An absolute must see. I've been listening to his music on pandora for the past few months ... but the live performance blew me away!

  • Tommy Emmanuel was great, sound was HORRIBLE

    by geo0guy on 7/24/10Showcase Live - FoxboroRating: 3 out of 5

I don't know why the soundman chose to use such punishing bass (or sub-bass) for an acoustic guitar. It really detracted from Tommy's remarkable skill as a guitarist & entertainer. Even delicate, melodic passages resulted in chest-thumping bass. At one point I thought, "so this is what a heart attack feels like". After the show, I asked the soundman (the board was right next to our so-called VIP booth, so he heard what we heard) if this type of mix was the trend in live music nowadays. He bristled & responded defensively that it was HIS taste, loud bass was fun, & I had to get with it. I'll continue to buy Tommy's music, but I'm not likely to attend another of his live shows. We recently attended an Albert Lee concert at the same venue (Showcase Live in Foxboro), & that was the most fun I've had in an audience, in my 50-something years on this earth. So, the venue's sound system is fine, but the guy mixing Tommy's sound should be fired, in my opinion.

  • AMAZING SHOW!!!

by TommyFan1010 on 7/21/10B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

I've seen Tommy Emmanuel perform at least three times before this, but I keep coming back because it is ALWAYS a great show! He adds something different each time! Tommy is simply my favorite guitarist - quite possibly the best out there. Even if you don't play guitar yourself, you can still get swept away by Tommy's amazing talents. He's a truly gifted performer. More than that, he's charismatic! He tells a few stories and cracks some jokes. Very personable, and quite a nice guy. What are you waiting for?!?! See Tommy's show as aoon as you can! =)

  • Tommy Emmanuel is incredible

by cmakely on 7/19/10B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Tommy Emmanuel is the most talented guitar player on the planet. If you play guitar you must see him. If you don't play guitar you must see him. Besides his incredible talent he is funny and very entertaining. The only issue I had was the VIP booth at BB Kings. Waiters and watresses were waliking in front of us all night. It was very annoying. He travels the world all year long, don't miss the chance of seeing the world's greates guitarist if he is in town.

  • Tommy is a guitar god!!

Best Tommy show yet. We've been to 3 now. They just keep getting better and better!

  • Tommy Emmanuel is a magician on guitar

When one's expectations are high, it's easy to be disappointed, but Tommy E delivered the goods. He is simply brilliant. The greatest acoustic guitarist in the world. He plays with such emotion -- mostly pure joy -- and with incomprehensiblly fast, independent fingers. And he's funny to boot. Great entertainment. I'd see him any and every time he's in town.

  • Tommy Emmanuel: None Better

Going in with high expectations usually leads to a let-down. Tommy exceeded my expectations. High energy and virtuoso playing.

  • Tommy Emmanuel, greatest guitarist I've ever seen!

by Saltinecracker on 7/19/10B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

I have been playing guitar for 32 years, and I have been told I am a very good player. You know how when you keep hearing things like this you can feel like, "hey, I am a very good guitar player." Well... after seeing Tommy Emmanuel perform this past Saturday night @ BB Kings, I was ready to sell 'em all and take up gardening!! The show was opened by a SUPER talent, also from Australia, named Troy Cassar-Daley. His vocals, guitar playing, and amazing songwriting ability prompted me to rush upstairs and buy a disc the minute he finished playing!! It was easy to see why he has received so many awards for his music! A great start to what would be a VERY unforgettable evening.... I had never seen Tommy Emmanuel perform live, but had only seen him on youtube. I knew this guy was good but... well lets just say he is the GREATEST guitar player I have ever seen in all my life! There simply is NO EQUAL. What this man can do with an acoustic guitar MUST BE SEEN TO BE BELIEVED. To top it off he seems to be a very likeable, funny guy, getting genuine laughter out of the entire audience many times during his performance. Listen, if you play guitar you MUST make it a point to see this man perform in person, and if you don't I promise that you will still be awestruck by his show! I was amazed and at some points almost moved to tears... his playing is filled with emotion and it is evident that this man loves the guitar. To close.... GO SEE HIM!!!!

  • Amazing Tommy Emmanuel the real guitar hero

by Matteauot on 7/18/10B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Tommy Emmanuel proves why he is considered one of the best guitarists in the world. The man brings unbelievable technique and graciousness to the stage. His obvious love for what he does translates to the audience. Not only are you blown away by his playing but Tommy connects on a personal level with his audience. Any guitar player that is not familiar with Tommy Emmanuel needs to attend a show to be amazed and overwhelmed. You will find yourself shaking your head with delight wondering how the hell he's doing what he's doing. The best part of the show for me was Tommy and 19 year old Chase Foster playing Classical Gas together. It was sublime. If you aren't aware of Tommy Emmanuel go to one of his shows or check out you tube for the best guitar experience around.

  • Amazing!

by peteinnj on 7/18/10B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Tommy is (in my opinion) simply the best all around guitar player on the planet. His basic style stems from Merle Travis, but he incorporates blues, jazz, percussion, and classical into a perfect mix. His technique is without peer, and the energy is boundless from the first note to the last. And this time around, we got a real bonus. His opening act was a country singer/player from Australia named Tory Cassar-Daley. What a voice! He fits right in with Toby Keith, George Strait, and so on, and picks a pretty good guitar himself. In addition, the young man who won "Australia's Got Talent" with his guitar picking skills played a bit, both solo and with Tommy (who obviously influenced his style), and an excellent local player who has played with Tommy before joined Tommy for a couple of songs. The sound is excellent, the food is pricey but very good (and HUGE portions). Mr. Emmanuel only hits NYC on average 2 nights per year, and I never miss it. Invariably I am seated with other musicians who, like myself, just sit with mouths open and remark, "what? You can't do that! How...." You get the idea. Peteinnj

If you're not a rabid guitar-nerd, Tommy's shows are beautiful and magical. If you are a rabid guitar-nerd, Tommy's shows are filled with the impossible. His skill is truly unparalleled and his arrangements are so amazing that you can't help but laugh, cry, and feel a general sense of wonderment. He is one of this planet's most prized gifts and to see how much fun he has playing for his audience make's Tommy one of the greatest performer's alive.

Excellent and fun!!!!! Chet Atkins on speed meets English music hall!

  • Tommy Emmanuel was brilliant

by Awesomeness123 on 7/18/10B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

It was amazing to see Tommy Emmanuel play guitar. Not only was his skills obviously good, his character shows as well. He brought up on stage two other guitarists/singers on stage and another guitarist from New York. I loved that fact that when Tommy was doing a duet, when it was his turn to solo, he would go all out, but then when it was the other person's turn to solo, he would play just as well as he always does but gives others the spotlight.

  • God played the guitar

There is only one word that describes Tommy Emmanuel as a guitar player and an all around entertainer "DEVINE". His playing will take you through the full range of human emotion in one show You will laugh and cry and everything inbetween. So, buckle up and enjoy the ride.

  • Tommy Emmanuel, BBKing's, July 17th 2010

by Genewarper on 7/18/10B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

I had some mixed feelings going into this concert by the Australian virtuoso jazz form acoustic guitarist. On the one hand, years ago I had been sent a recording from my sister in Australia and hadn't been too impressed (although my elder son had absolutely loved it), and on the other, I've seen recent performances on TV and was simply blown away so.... The concert itself was overall great fun and Mr Emmanuel's playing was extremely good - quite mesmerising at times and worth every penny of the admission fee. I honestly wish I was returning to see him tonight also. He's a natural performer, completely at ease with his audience, totally sincere and without pretensions and needing to prove nothing at all about his remarkable talent, technical skill and wonderful musicality. When he was playing it was wonderful. My only criticism is that the flow of the concert was broken up too often by changes in tempo, and guests - this is a minor criticism overall, but it's consequence was that the performance did not come to a natural emotional peak and left me feeling slightly empty. However, this is what one might expect of a performer whose heart is open for everyone to see and who structures his performances exactly as he might do if he were playing in your living room. I'd go back to hear Mr Emmanuel, but I'd think twice about the VENUE - it took two whole hours for hours to get any food, the wait staff were let down by the kitchen, whose food was basic at best and prices simply ridiculous, even by NYC standards. Seventy dollars per head with neither starters nor wine (but seven pints of beer), is only acceptable if people enjoy it.

We thoroughly enjoyed this show! My son is 16 and plays guitar & I bought him, myself & his dad the tickets as a surprise based on someone suggesting we go. When we left they could not stop talking about it. We actually cant wait to hear that he is coming again. We have told several people about the show & how good it was. Thanks.
