About

Don't buy a gift; give an experience. This year, The Washington Ballet celebrates 15 years of its very-DC version of The Nutcracker, through December 28 at the historic Warner Theatre in downtown Washington DC.

Set to Tchaikovsky's magical score, this celebrated production set in 1882 early Georgetown has become the signature Nutcracker in our nation's capital. The curtain rises and the audience is transported back in time to a Georgetown mansion, where party guests include Frederick Douglass, John Paul Jones, Harriet Tubman, Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. The Washington Ballet's iconic version is equal parts history lesson, mischief and humor. With General Washington as the heroic Nutcracker and George III as the Rat King, the story comes to life with over 100 dancers, intricate, stunning set designs and original custom costumes. Audiences will be captivated by stunning duets by Anacostia Native Americans and a springtime on the banks of the Potomac. Waltzing cherry blossoms, dancing cardinals and dancing sugar plums plus other enchanting adaptations make this unique production at the majestic Warner Theatre a special treat that continues to captivate audiences of all ages.

  • Beautiful Performance

by Kledger on 12/11/23Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Beautiful show, great performance, but ushers were very loud and distracting during show as well as glow from people checking phones, taking pictures and expensive popcorn was stale. So great show but disappointing venue.

Taking my daughter to see the Nutcracker is a Christmas tradition we’ve enjoyed in previous places where we have lived. This year was the first time seeing the Washington Ballet perform at the Warner Theatre. This proved to be our favorite performance of all. The talent, set and costumes were spectacular. The theatre provided a beautiful setting with comfortable seating. Parking in the attached garage was convenient. We will return next year.

This was a spectacular show! Went during the Military Appreciation Night showing. My family has been attending this specific night for several years now. I was so happy that they added a few new items to the performance this year.

Everything was wonderful, a real holiday classic with a little Washington DC flare. I would absolutely recommend this for all ages.

  • Beautiful but Parents, Shush!

Absolutely lovely but someone needs to tell friends/families of the performers opening day isn’t a rehearsal! SO much chattering during the performance (mainly excited fam/friends) which was disrespectful to all, including the amazing young performers. Otherwise, lovely and magical. Bravo!

  • Classic Performance but attendants shouldn

by Melissa on 12/6/23Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 3 out of 5

The Warner Theater is classic and the Nutcracker Performance was well done. I enjoyed all of the local children in the production. The sets were gorgeous. The theater said that it doesn't allow oversized bags into the theater like backpacks. They didn't mention you could reserve a locker outside of security. As we had explored around DC all day, knowing there was a locker would have really helped us with our planning. My theater seat (Orchestra Section Row G; Seat 16) was beyond uncomfortable. Narrow, back was stiff and my seat leaned forward. The man next to me was equally uncomfortable. I understand these are classic seats and you're trying to pack folks in but my seat was a torture device for 2 hours. Finally, the security attendant sitting near the exit door near me played on her phone the entire performance. Starting in the second act, she actually started to watch Instagram and other videos not muting the sound (no headphones). When enough people stared at her, she muted her phone or got rid of the video. Not sure what the point of employing her is as she played on her phone the entire time (which was distracting as she was loud typing, etc).

  • A Blast.

    by M.A. on 12/6/23Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 3 out of 5

The first scene of Victorian costumes flitting about in a parlor made one wish for energy and heightened precision from the dancers who lacked starch in their gestures which we got later from the solo European danceuse who also partnered with an apt European. If there were programs I couldn’t find one. All in all a lively circus that thrilled the children.

I had a great time at the Nutcracker :) the dance performance was dynamic and friendly for all ages, with creative DC twists and great set and costuming!

  • Magical experience!

    by RetiredBallerina00 on 1/4/23Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

This is the 3rd time I have retuned to this magical ballet, this time bringing my mom. It was everything I expected, and just as magical and beautiful as times 1 and 2. Dancing is spectacular, sets are all immersive, and the presentation of this Nutcracker is just so unique and tailored to the Washington Ballet in the D.C. area. I won't give away all of the surprises, but just know that it is an experience you do not want to miss. Thank you for the beauty!

  • Holiday Treat at the Warner Theater

by Murty on 1/2/23Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

I went with a group of friends to see "The Nutcracker" at the Warner Theater in Washington, DC, on December 30, 2022. It was a dazzling production and we enjoyed it very much. The theater was packed for it seems to be a DC tradition. The ticket purchase, and the receipt and transfer of electronic tickets all worked very well. My only complaint is that the spacings between the rows was too small for six footers like me.

  • High energy and interesting choreography

by SSKAMAL on 12/30/22Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 3 out of 5

The DNA of this specific ballet is for children and by children. So, by definition the fledgling aptitude of the ballet corp is heavily biased by amateur execution. Very enjoyable choreography despite the large crowd onstage in several scenes. Well done.

  • The Washington Ballet Nutcracker

by Quincy on 12/29/22Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

The performance was beautiful and entertaining. I enjoyed how the storyline fit into the Washington area geography. The performers, their costumes, props, and backgrounds were all stunning! The only not so positive critique is that It would have been nice to have had a Programme available for those who requested one.

  • Unexpected?

by Did not expect that on 12/29/22Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 3 out of 5

The show was nice, the pacing was a little slow, there were very cute little mice in one scene and then the cultural acts came on and it was so confusing. The countries weren’t obvious and they weren’t played by the correct actors. They need to work on costumes and casting choices. Some of the dances lasted too long with nothing intriguing going on in the background or anything special.
