About

Don't buy a gift; give an experience. This year, The Washington Ballet celebrates 15 years of its very-DC version of The Nutcracker, through December 28 at the historic Warner Theatre in downtown Washington DC.

Set to Tchaikovsky's magical score, this celebrated production set in 1882 early Georgetown has become the signature Nutcracker in our nation's capital. The curtain rises and the audience is transported back in time to a Georgetown mansion, where party guests include Frederick Douglass, John Paul Jones, Harriet Tubman, Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. The Washington Ballet's iconic version is equal parts history lesson, mischief and humor. With General Washington as the heroic Nutcracker and George III as the Rat King, the story comes to life with over 100 dancers, intricate, stunning set designs and original custom costumes. Audiences will be captivated by stunning duets by Anacostia Native Americans and a springtime on the banks of the Potomac. Waltzing cherry blossoms, dancing cardinals and dancing sugar plums plus other enchanting adaptations make this unique production at the majestic Warner Theatre a special treat that continues to captivate audiences of all ages.

  • Very good

by Grant on 12/8/24Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

The show was one of the best Nutcracker ballets we have seen. The venue allowed us a great view even from the less expensive seats😃. Really great night out

  • Just beautiful and so DC

by Emily on 12/3/24Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

From the set, to the company dancers, to all of the Washington Ballet students, this show was magical. Highly recommend!

  • The BEST Nutcracker in DC!

by Redfordfan on 12/3/24Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

What a wonderful performance!! From beginning to the VERY END—the ballerinas were amazing, the costumes were splendid, the diversity was refreshing, and the integration of Washington, DC into the storyline was clever and surprising! Run, don’t walk, for this amazing experience!

  • Loved the performance

The venue was magical especially at Christmas time. The sound was great, performance fantastic. Something needs to be done about loud snacks and people. Concessions shouldn’t sell bags that crinkle and people need to learn to not talk in performances.

  • Incredible Performance

The Nutcracker at Warner Theater was exceptional. I take my girls every year, and this is by far our favorite. This year (Dec 2023) was the best yet! Bravo to all the performers, parents, and teachers who put this together. It’s wonderful.

  • Is not the real Nutcracker

by Kike on 1/2/24Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 3 out of 5

They change the history and the characters. Disappointing

First time ever seeing the Nutcracker. Still not sure if I know what was going on. 😕 she got a Nutcracker for Xmas and fell asleep and was dreaming the rest of the time?

  • Nutcracker was awesome!

by Marie on 1/1/24Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

I loved dancing in the Nutcracker and I hope to continue doing this. It is a beautiful show.

  • Visually beautiful

by Lori on 12/31/23Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

This Nutcracker is magical in bringing the community together in a lush, classical setting with many talented dancers. A feast for the eyes. Unfortunately there’s no orchestra, and recorded music is just not the same as the real thing.

  • Not a ballet!

by Mikhail on 12/31/23Rating: 1 out of 5

Was extremely disappointed, because I expected actual ballet. Instead it was some experimental stuff with a few mediocre ballet elements. Probably the only ballet in the world where one can find fat ballerinas mixed in with Shen Yun dance imitators and other obviously non ballet elements. Call it a performance- fine, it’s cute. Call it ballet - it’s a false advertisement.

  • Awful

    by Anon613 on 12/31/23Rating: 1 out of 5

It was an okay performance but it was not great ballet at all. There was some previous obvious mistakes, and most of the moves were basic. Also, there was not a lot of ballet. The actual ballet was not there for a lot of the performance and they missed a lot of the classical things that should be in the Nutcracker. Also, not there fault but nobody in the audience could be quiet and clapped at random times.

  • Best Nutcracker Yet!

by ViolaMama on 12/30/23Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Having seen so many Nutcrackers, this is the best production yet. Dancing is superb, and the sets are magical. A must see!

  • Gorgeous experience

by Hannah on 12/30/23Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

The set was so endearing and realistic! The best costumes I've ever seen at a Nutcracker performance. Amazingly talented dancers, and I LOVED the choreography of the party around the Christmas tree in the first act.

  • Cool show...Dated venue

by Tony on 12/30/23Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 3 out of 5

This interpretation of the Nutcracker was interesting. A little hard to follow. Used to understanding immediately who the cast of characters are but that kind of gets lost in this one. I did love how all the different nationalities and peoples of color were represented. The theatre was packed and swelteringly so. It was so uncomfortable and with how close you were to other viewers, if they were talking or just inching towards each other you couldn't see the play at all. The theatre just needs a complete OVERHAUL

  • Best Ever Nutcracker

by LSRnDC on 12/27/23Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

I have been attending the Washington Ballet’s Nutcracker regularly for over 40 years, three of which one of my daughters performed, and this was the best ever. In all honesty I have been less fond of the Septime Weber production, but this year blew my mind. Everything about the show has been elevated and hit the perfect mark. The dancing was exquisite and the choreography beautiful. The younger kids had meaningful rather than silly roles and actually added to the performance. I was ecstatic at the end. Bravo to the Washington Ballet!

  • Beautiful

by FabricAndScissors on 12/27/23Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

I love this version of The Nutcracker, I find it very interesting all the George Washington and the Revolution era references. This year the costumes and the scenography are specially beautiful, and the performances were on point. However, I took a star off because of the absence of a live orchestra, and the low quality sound of the recorded music. That makes me sad, because it took some of the brightness from a otherwise wonderful experience.

  • Terrific Christmas family event

by Batmom on 12/27/23Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

My adult daughter and I have a long tradition of attending a play or concert during the holiday season. I am so glad that this year we chose the Nutcracker performed by Washington Ballet. Not only was the ballet top rate but it had a DC influence. The venue staff were outstanding; very professional and yet out-going. We went to the 11 am performance, so there were a lot of kids (some too young for the performance which resulted in numerous persons leaving the theatre and then returning to their seats). We will go again!!!

  • So so

by Ju on 12/27/23Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 3 out of 5

The performance was okay. Appeared to me to be amateur performers. The last was small & between the ages of 3-20. The main performers seem at stage where they are developing their art - developing their interpretative skills. The scenery was basic no wow factor. The audience was enthusiastic the theater itself is old and small. The event staff were impatient. Herding you out like cattle. I've seen 3 other renditions of the Nutcracker. Overall This lacked the lustre & polish id expected
