The Slutcracker at Somerville Theatre
Ballet-parody masterpiece The Slutcracker has been delivering raunchy, ribald revelry and erotic good vibrations to Somerville Theatre audiences since 2008. Based on Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's famed 1890s ballet The Nutcracker, it combines high culture with burlesque tradition and gathers together local ballet dancers, strippers, belly dancers, pole performers, hula-hoopers, acrobats, plus other eccentric and exotic dancers.
In The Slutcracker, sequins and glitter meet fleshy natural beauty with an emphasis on diversity, individuality and an adults-only approach to sexual freedom. "Classic" female-gendered performers share the stage with male and trans performers. Risqué costumes and blush-inducing props assure that this is not a Nutcracker for kids — so 18 and over only, please.
About The Slutcracker
The Slutcracker was created by choreographer-director Vanessa White, a former Nutcracker dancer who still performs as the Sugar Dish Fairy in this saucy adaptation featuring her Lipstick Criminals troupe. "Like all art, people will take away what it means to them," she once explained to The Tufts Daily. "All I ever wanted to do was make a beautiful show — and funny, and sexy." Her work is set to Tchaikovsky's score as recorded by the Czech Republic's Brno Philharmonic Orchestra.
White's major modification of the E. T. A. Hoffmann short story that inspired the original was to transform the ballet's youthful sibling protagonists, Clara and Fritz, into a dissatisfied engaged couple.
Clara and Fritz explore a garden of previously forbidden sexual delights in the work's dreamlike second act, when The Slutcracker cuts loose with a wide variety of titillating capers featuring Russian dominatrixes, the erotic Dance of the Reed Pole, and a troupe of sexually indeterminate clowns. Other set pieces include "Waltz of the Flowers and Wet-Spot Fairy," a Busby Berkeley take-off, and a Bacchanalia involving both the onstage performers and a team of "Fluffers" working among the audience. Suffice to say that The Slutcracker contains everything audiences love about the original holiday perennial – and a whole lot more.
This was one of the best burlesque shows my wife and i have been to. Completely entertaining...
After years of seeing this advertised, we decided to go. And we are so glad we did. It’s not for the prudish or faint of heart. No, the Slutcracker is mature audiences only for a reason. It started slow, a bit clunky even. But we were overwhelmed (in a good way) from the moment a “magic wand” lit up until the curtain fell. Go see this. You’ll love it.
It's been 12-Years of SLUTMAS and every year is better and better! This is THE holiday show for New England and the best time ever! The dancers are all fantastic, every show is a thrilling experience and it is the absolute best holiday tradition.
The Slutcracker is worth seeing. It's fun, witty, and playful. A perfectly raunchy spin on a classic production.
i didn’t know what to expect. honestly, i thought it was just going to be ok, but it turned out to be a really great show. i would definitely see it again.
This is the 4th year my group has gone- We’ve grown from 4 to 15 and intend to keep going! The show is well done and thoughtfully cast with a diverse talent pool. Great job, Sugar Dish! We love the Cracker, its truly become one of the favorite parts of our holiday season
The cast was so diverse and the costumes alternately extravagant and sexy -- sometimes transitioning perfectly from one to another. Some lovely ballet, a few bits of comic relief here and there, lovely dancing, and of course that classic score. 💯
Slutcracker is a cultural experience that is as accessible to the common man, as it is entertaining.
The slutcracker was totally not what I was expecting... but in the best way. I was thinking stripper dancing’s with bare boobage and no relevance to the actual nutcracker but instead it was a tastefully chorégraphed adult version of the nutcracker! Costumes were apppropriate and pretty, story line made more sense than actual nutcracker and I spent the entire time laughing and being awed by the awesome array of dancer of different shapes, sizes, genders and sexual orientation. It was a blast and I will definitely be returning next year!
Witty, funny and talented, Slutcracker is NOT for the whole family, but that is what made it so wonderful. Although the jokes and themes toed the line of “appropriate” it some how remained professional and fresh. Would see it again. I recommend getting there right when the doors open as it is general admission and some seats in the theater, particular the the balcony, have some hard to see areas. Our show was sold out and we were stretching our necks to see some parts of the stage, but the show was phenomenal :) :) Go see it. Worst case, you’ll have a great time!
The best experience you can have for the holidays.. only for the fun at heart, not the faint at heart.
A ballet for every type of dancer! Refreshing to see all races, sizes, gender orientation and preference with amazing different talents doing what they love. The hard work showed and the performers shined.
Such a fun and unique experience. The dancing was also amazing. Would definitely recommend!
Fun, hilarious, and just Beautiful! Just to sum it up.
Absolutely Amazing loved everything arc of it... My wife and I will definitely be back for next yr 2018 whoot whoot Happy 10th Anniversary
Me and my bf are in early 30s, like the majority of the audience at the show. Both of us didn't like it at all, there were only a couple of funny-ish moments in the 1st part. I noticed quite a few couples left the theater in the middle of the show and a couple sitting next to us was also quiet. The elderly women and mid aged women who were on their 2d (at least) glass of wine were much more excited about the show - so maybe the show was made for them... The only positive thing i can say is that they followed the story of the original Nutcracker. Not worth the money we spent, even though the txts were inexpensive.
Seen this production a few years now. Every time it’s the best show. Beautiful, fun and even some comedy all while performing classic ballet dance.
What a great show, fun and great for a girls night out
What a great show! Perfect for a girls night out. The performers were so expressive and funny!
