Following an acclaimed sell-out tour of the United Kingdom, Cameron Mackintosh's spectacular new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's phenomenal musical success, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, will make its premiere in Chicago as part of a brand new US National Tour.
Hailed as "Stunning, intense and spectacular" by the Sunday Express, this production features a brilliant new design by Paul Brown, costumes by the much missed Maria Björnson, a new staging by Laurence Connor — director of the recent acclaimed 25th anniversary celebration at the Royal Albert Hall — and new choreography by Scott Ambler. The production is overseen by Matthew Bourne and Cameron Mackintosh.
I was absolutely blown away by performance! The audience was caught up in the emotion and heartbreak of the characters. I would highly recommend!
An absolutely stunning show, fantastic music and staging--actually, everything, it all comes together well.
This was an excellent production. We loved the cast, stage sets, and special effects. I recommended that my Facebook connections attend this event.
The entire show was stunning from start to finish. The cast was superb and funny. The singing true to the original with only small variations tastefully done. The set engineering was incredible utilizing a mammoth structure that spun, open and closed to hold unending set surprises. The chandelier was of course present and fun and the effects and pyrotechnics were wondrous. Last but not least the orchestra was definitely on point and played beautifully. I could never recommend this cast and show enough!
I have been waiting to see this again for far too long & this performance did not disappoint.
The actors were amazing.... Their voices gave me goose bump. The set was incredible and amazingly made.... A must see
In the Friday evening show, the curtain shot just before the last scene in the First Act for a technical difficulty. As a comedic coincidence, the "real" technical difficulties came at the precise moment that the "fictional" story was closing the curtain for the ballet scene to keep the "fictional" audience from knowing the troubles that the Phantom caused at the end of Scene 9. Some people in the audience did not even realize that there were actual technical difficulties at the Cadillac Theater. Regardless, hard to give a show 4 or 5 stars when they do not have the staging figured out.
Show was just as good if not better than it was when I saw the original show 20 years ago
My best friend and I love Phantom so I bought her tickets for her birthday this year! We weren't upset enough to ask for my money back or anything but there were a few things that disappointed us. The phantom did not have a strong voice and there were some obvious mic issues. I figured out at intermission that he was the under study. I know that there are under studies for a reason but on a Friday night at 7:30p, I figured we'd get the real deal or maybe an under study that was better suited for the role. There was a "technical difficulty" in the middle of the performance which lasted for about 10 minutes. Again, I know stuff like that happens but it was just disappointing in the middle of a show. That being said, the music was fabulous as always. The orchestra and conductor were phenomenal along with Carlotta and Raoul. I'd recommend seeing it because I'm sure the technical difficulty and phantom issues will be nonexistent at further shows. I was disappointed that that happened at the show I attended.
The interruption threw everything off. I'd rather have know what was happening then to sit in a darkened theater not knowing what was wrong. The staging and scenerary was good.
I was not expected to be blown away, but Cooper was amazing and the special effects were fun, too! It's been 20+ years since I've seen it in Chicago and I was thrilled I went again! The singing was amazing!
We went to the performance on the second night the Phantom opened. It looked more as if it was the Dress rehearsal. The production had a major curtain close during the last act in the first part. In addition some of the special effects did not work, such as lighting flames, not all of the cans were lit up. It was disappointing to have $100 seating that blocked the entire stage view. We did not get the full effect of the chandler or see the performance taking place on the second level of the set. The Phantom was under study and at times it was unclear what the words were to the song. It was not a good value for the money we spent.
Overall, this show was horrid. Singing was excellent, set great. But the plot and theme were convoluted. We didn't care about the characters - basically a murderer/kidnapper/wanna be rapist is the lead/Phantom. Really felt no sympathy for any of the characters. And what was the deal with the girl's dead dad? Did he set it up so the Phantom would own her? Had to start making up my own plot line since this one was so convoluted. I know we are supposed to suspend disbelief when going to theater but this was all too yucky for us to go along. DO NOT TAKE KIDS - multiple hangings, deaths just leave you feeling yucky. Made the mistake of taking my teen and she absolutely hated it. Can't believe this show has lasted so long. One amazing, awesome song - that is it and it is truly a beautiful song. The operas within opera were tiresome and irritating. Stay home for this one. I've never written a review before, but had to do so tonight as soon as I got home.
Went opening night. The first thing I noticed was that the person that played the phantom was not there. Heard a rumor he had been replaced. Also heard that the staging had been reworked and yes, it was. There were some things about the staging that I thought were better and some things I missed. For example, they handle the chandelier differently and I liked the original was better. Also, the final confrontation with the phantom was different. I seemed to remember liking the old way better. I have seen this play about ten times and I would rate this phantom's performance somewhere in the middle. I gave this performance 5 stars and was very thankful to see it again.
The Phantom of the Opera was wonderful! My daughter said it was the best show she's ever seen.
The seats. The performances . The moment was exactly what you hope for!
First of all, I am a musician and approach music a bit differently than non-musicians. I'm far more critical of the music and hear errors almost instantly. The music was performed exactly as it is on the CD with no noticeable errors. Secondly, the play was excellent. All performers sang wonderfully and were very good. The only negative, if it is a negative, was the role of the Phantom. I cant put my finger on it but something was off with his singing. It was still very good but it caught my ear at the play.
The show was stunning. Great set, vocals, choreography and effects. Some staging was awkward, but, it was fabulous for an opening night!
I saw Phantom of the Opera the first time in 1990. I thought that production was brilliant, but the recent production of the Phantom by Cameron MacIntosh was absolutely superior in every way. The scenery and singing was superb, unsurpassable. In my opinion, "Phantom" is Andrew Lloyd Webber's winning musical in every way. The songs are unforgettable---they stick in your head like no others. I have seen "Cats" five times when I lived in London; I've seen "Evita" "Aspects of Love" and "Les Miserables" but somehow, "Phantom of the Opera" is the most memorable of modern musicals. I think it's already a classic. Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical genius shines through. I would recommend this musical to anyone who loves beautiful music and a great storyline as well.
Great time and the third time I've seen this in three cities
