The Nutcracker On Tour

Every adaptation of The Nutcracker is the same, yet each The Nutcracker is different from all others. Although it premiered in Saint Petersburg's Mariinsky Theatre on December 18, 1892, composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker wouldn't become the dependably magical holiday-season reaffirmation of Christmas joy we know and love until decades later.

Marius Petipa, who commissioned Tchaikovsky's music, and Lev Ivanov originally choreographed the world's most popular ballet. It was loosely based on Alexandre Dumas' The Story of a Nutcracker, the French writer's adaptation of The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, which was a fantastical story by German author E.T.A. Hoffmann. Mourning the recent death of his sister, Tchaikovsky was often unhappy while composing the work, which he nonetheless imbued with some of his most enduringly gorgeous music. (The descending melody in the adagio section of the "Grand Pas de Deux" is said to reflect his feelings.)

Russian ballet was flourishing at the time The Nutcracker debuted, and no expense was spared. In Petipa's production, 60 snowflakes wore long white tutus and matching crowns adorned with fluff balls. The battle scene's soldiers, meanwhile, were recruited from a military academy rather than ballet school, leading to a less-than-elegant confrontation.

The Nutcracker was fated to become more popular abroad than in its birthplace, and was subsequently tailored to suit its new audiences. Encouraged by local Russian émigrés, Willam Christensen mounted the first full American production in San Francisco in 1944. Ten years later, George Balanchine choreographed a landmark version for the New York City Ballet, imbuing it with what Nutcracker Nation author Jennifer Fisher calls its "familial feeling." Balanchine's version was broadcast on national television a few years later with narration by June Lockhart (of Lassie fame).

While nearly every subsequent version of The Nutcracker contains falling snow, fighting mice, dancing candy, and a growing tree (asked to produce it without the tree, Balanchine reportedly replied, "No, the ballet is the tree"), some intriguing mutations have emerged. These include Nutcrackers on ice, the animated adaptation Walt Disney included in the 1940 movie Fantasia, and The Harlem Nutcracker, a swinging jazz revision by choreographer Donald Byrd.

A remarkably resilient blend of complex classical ballet, popular imagery, and holiday nostalgia, The Nutcracker has taken on a life of its own since it first appeared one cold Russian winter over 100 years ago.

  • Nutcracker experience was fabulous

by RKJB on 12/22/15Morrison Center for the Performing Arts - BoiseRating: 5 out of 5

This was my first ballet experience and I was absolutely amazed by the performers, stage settings and costumes. I found the whole experience very enjoyable and will certainly be back for more performances in the future. Besides the performance itself, the children in the audience were delightful, all dressed up and what a wonderful cultural experience for them at this time of year.

  • The Nutcracker was so amazing!

Everything about the performance was just splendid (not a word I use frequently)! We had seats close to the stage so we could see the expressions on the childrens' faces which added to the beauty of the production. The sets were grand, the costumes beautiful, and, of course, the music...the Boise Philharmonic was wonderful!

Great show, took my 6 year old and she loved it as well!

  • The Nutcracker | A Great Holiday Kick-off

by dogsarelucky on 12/22/15Morrison Center for the Performing Arts - BoiseRating: 5 out of 5

I've performed in and watched a LOT of holiday ballets, thinking I had my fill of the Nutcracker, I stepped up and bought tickets to The Nutcracker by Idaho Ballet. Surprise! Artistic Director/Choreographer Peter Anastos trumped my reluctance with a performance full of twisty turns to the story. Yeah! Mr. Anastos is known for subtle winks and nods that he adds to tradition, knowing just how to perk up even the novice ballet goer AND the ballet veteran. The company dancers executed a well danced program. Cleanly executed and professional. Love all the creative solos, but MY eye and heart goes to the Corps de ballet. The Corps is a star in it's own unique way and this Corps nailed their every which way patterns in the Snowflake and Flower sections. Kudos to the rehearsal masters. Intricate work for an evolving company! And the children were spot on delightful and appropriate in their scenes. I chose seats center and farther back from the stage so we could take it ALL in and see the stage patterns. When you see a classic ballet, don't think sitting stage front improves your experience. Sit back in the venue and ABSORB the entire vision. Loving this company. So looking forward to their Sinatra | Twyla Tharp event. It's perfect for them.

Loved the Nutcracker. My first experience with the Morrison center and the ballet of Idaho. Great dancers.

The Nutcracker was amazing! The dancing was beautiful, and the live orchestra music was superb. We wanted to see more!

  • Excellent performance

by NuttyCrackerton on 12/22/15Tilles Center Concert Hall - BrookvilleRating: 4 out of 5

I really enjoyed myself! The performances were excellent and you could tell a tremendous amount of effort went into the set and ballet performances. I was slightly disappointed with the Christmas tree as it wasn't a really traditional Christmas color, was overwhelmed with blue lights. The hanging circle trapeze act was really unique. Something straight out of Cirque du Solei. Amazing. I was also somewhat disappointed that there was no live orchestra. Besides that, it was a great performance!

The efforts at comedy were less than successful. Too hard to pull off in a Ballet format. Stick to the story line. Get some more male dancers. Really need more than (1) Cossack.

I took my mother to see the show and we felt the show was very amateuris for the money. It was more like watching a local performance.

  • Magical!

The wonderful use of children and professionals together on stage was amazing.

  • New tradition every year- incredible.

We've seen the Nutcracker performed by other groups, but this was the first time we saw Ballet Idaho perform it. The staging, costumes and dancing were exceptional. The Philharmonic did not disappoint. The choreography was great. We will be back every year from now on!

  • Great Show!

    by MDS56 on 12/21/15Royce Hall - UCLA - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

Let me state first, I am not a Ballet person, and I went because my date asked to go...that being said, I actually really had a great time. I could tell from the beginning, the way the crowd came in buzzed with excitment that it would be an interesting performance. It was! Though not educated in Ballet, I could find nothing out of synch, and after awhile I actually forgot I was watching a show and got lost in the story. I have been to other performance of the Nutcracker, and really didn't like them...the music yes, but I had thought ballet was not my cup of tea...well either I have grown older and wiser, or these performers were great...I think the second. Why not 5 stars? I'm sorry, I wish there had been live music, it would have made it into one of those life long memories.

The Birmingham Ballet did an excellent job with this Christmas classic. Music, actors, costumes, and props were really nice. Thanks for bringing such great performances to my home town.

  • not impressed

by RepatriatedSouthernMom on 12/16/15BJCC Concert Hall - BirminghamRating: 3 out of 5

I have seen the Nutcracker Ballet one time, and it was performed by the Russian Ballet Company when they were touring in the USA. I don't know much about ballet, so I didn't think to see what company was creating this performance. It was probably average for a local ballet company, but very very poor compared to the Nutcracker at its full potential. The cost of m tickets to the Russian Ballet was not too much more than these tickets so I assumed it would be a similar level of quality. But I was wrong. It seems like the cheapest tickets should have been $7-8, but instead we paid almot $100 for three tickets plus fees for the cheapest tickets they had available. Whether or not I would recommend this would depend on what your expectations are and what level of quality you are wanting to see. My seven year old son (who has never seen another Nutcracker) loved the performance. I just couldn't stop thinking about how much I paid for the tickets compared to the Russian Ballet. . . .

  • Community Nutcracker delightful as always!!!

    by myem1 on 12/16/15Florida Theatre Jacksonville - JacksonvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Community Nutcracker Jacksonville puts on an unforgettable show that is utterly delightful! It's so wonderful I see it every year and it is a surefire way to get into the Christmas season earlier in December than the other area nutcracker ballets. I love that they work with Dreams Come True and also make sure that they have a "community service night" for area disabled children, the elderly, foster kids and more, what a special memorable night for these individuals, it means the world to them to be able to attend! This was also my daughter's first year participating in the show, she was cast a mouse and it was amazing seeing my child, one of so many area talented kids up on that Florida Theatre stage delighting people of all ages! I volunteered backstage and met so many lovely people while having a great time, this was my favorite part of this holiday season, giving back to this wonderful community!

I would see it again. Couldn't make to Atlanta to see it there, this was an acceptable substitute. It was a community production that many people spent time and effort on, it was good.

  • meh...

    by Wolf1971 on 12/16/15BJCC Concert Hall - BirminghamRating: 2 out of 5

Took my six year old to see it. He loves the music and we thought it would be entertaining for him to see a live performance. Knowing that their audience is primarily parents with small children, they should really attempt to start on time. The introductory remarks didn't start until 2:20, then there was a nonsensical 20 minute intro to provide the "backstory." By the time the actual performance of the Nutcracker started, it was almost 3 PM. We had been sitting in our seats for well over an hour. We left after the first act at 3:20. Additionally, the Birmingham Ballet really ought to consider hiring the Alabama Symphony Orchestra to perform the music. The piped-in track was disappointing, and really not loud enough to fill the concert hall. Considering the cost of the tickets, they could do better.

  • Outstanding

    by JaxMom2014 on 12/16/15Florida Theatre Jacksonville - JacksonvilleRating: 5 out of 5

A great performance with beautiful costumes, sets and dancers! (My only suggestion is to have the Friday night performance earlier at 7 or 7:30 - it's too late for a younger-geared audience (and cast!).

  • The Magic of the Nutcracker

    by tmagic2 on 12/16/15BJCC Concert Hall - BirminghamRating: 5 out of 5

I have loved the Nutcracker since I was a kid and I love this version. The Birmingham Ballet truly captured the magic, beauty, and romance of the beloved story

  • Not worth the time or money

    by Cbrown3468 on 12/16/15BJCC Concert Hall - BirminghamRating: 3 out of 5

This was a very low budget watered down version of The Nutcracker. I have attended The Nutcracker Ballet every other year since elementary school. This was by far NOT a good spin on the classic. The fact that it ran during the same time as the performance at the Samford Wright Center didn't help as I have attended that one and was NEVER disappointed. I know I was not the only one who felt this way. I heard many others murmuring about the poor quality. There was even a patron yelling at a staff member about how bad she felt the show was in her opinion. Not that I agree with that behavior. But I do agree with her sentiments. Will never attend again!!
