The Nutcracker On Tour

Every adaptation of The Nutcracker is the same, yet each The Nutcracker is different from all others. Although it premiered in Saint Petersburg's Mariinsky Theatre on December 18, 1892, composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker wouldn't become the dependably magical holiday-season reaffirmation of Christmas joy we know and love until decades later.

Marius Petipa, who commissioned Tchaikovsky's music, and Lev Ivanov originally choreographed the world's most popular ballet. It was loosely based on Alexandre Dumas' The Story of a Nutcracker, the French writer's adaptation of The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, which was a fantastical story by German author E.T.A. Hoffmann. Mourning the recent death of his sister, Tchaikovsky was often unhappy while composing the work, which he nonetheless imbued with some of his most enduringly gorgeous music. (The descending melody in the adagio section of the "Grand Pas de Deux" is said to reflect his feelings.)

Russian ballet was flourishing at the time The Nutcracker debuted, and no expense was spared. In Petipa's production, 60 snowflakes wore long white tutus and matching crowns adorned with fluff balls. The battle scene's soldiers, meanwhile, were recruited from a military academy rather than ballet school, leading to a less-than-elegant confrontation.

The Nutcracker was fated to become more popular abroad than in its birthplace, and was subsequently tailored to suit its new audiences. Encouraged by local Russian émigrés, Willam Christensen mounted the first full American production in San Francisco in 1944. Ten years later, George Balanchine choreographed a landmark version for the New York City Ballet, imbuing it with what Nutcracker Nation author Jennifer Fisher calls its "familial feeling." Balanchine's version was broadcast on national television a few years later with narration by June Lockhart (of Lassie fame).

While nearly every subsequent version of The Nutcracker contains falling snow, fighting mice, dancing candy, and a growing tree (asked to produce it without the tree, Balanchine reportedly replied, "No, the ballet is the tree"), some intriguing mutations have emerged. These include Nutcrackers on ice, the animated adaptation Walt Disney included in the 1940 movie Fantasia, and The Harlem Nutcracker, a swinging jazz revision by choreographer Donald Byrd.

A remarkably resilient blend of complex classical ballet, popular imagery, and holiday nostalgia, The Nutcracker has taken on a life of its own since it first appeared one cold Russian winter over 100 years ago.

  • Not a professional show

by Badminton9 on 12/23/15Tilles Center Concert Hall - BrookvilleRating: 1 out of 5

This may have been my mistake, but I was expecting to see the Nutcracker with all the pomp and circumstance. This was really just a dance school recital. No orchestra and no professional dancers. Some of the lead dancers were very good, but it just didn't seem real without the live music. And it didn't seem like they opened the curtains all the way. I was sitting in the first seat on the aisle in the side section and couldn't see the Christmas tree at all.

  • Disappointed in the Nutcracker

Disappointing. Amateurish. Looked like a school play.

  • Beautiful and mesmerizing, 'The Nutcracker'

Delightful to watch and the music is unforgettable! It would be extra nice if only youngsters were encouraged instead of the opposite.

  • Marvelous

The revamped show was more colorful, faster-moving, and the dancing was much improved. My granddaughter could not keep her eyes off the stage!

  • Ballet Idaho Nutcracker is Worth Seeing

by Boiseartsyes on 12/23/15Morrison Center for the Performing Arts - BoiseRating: 5 out of 5

Great costumes, sets and a playful and dramatic take on the mostly traditional choreography and story. The Boise Philharmonic played beautifully - very special experience. Great dancing... The first time I saw this production I was impressed with how well it measured up to big city ballet productions of the Nutcracker.

  • Seen one amazing talent. All the rest was good.

by Grzegorz on 12/23/15Tilles Center Concert Hall - BrookvilleRating: 3 out of 5

The overall spectacle was good. I would take my kids to such one again, but I was expecting - probably misled by the Russian last name - something on a much higher level. There was an Asian looking small girl that was moving with such grace, that she was taking whole spotlight on herself. I was speaking with others after the performance, and all were mesmerized by her. A star is being born!

Great way to celebrate the Christmas season. The show was amazing and having front row seats was the best. Great way to have a nice evening with my daughter.

Beautifully done! I did wonder if in the past the music to the bakers was a little more upbeat?

  • Affordable and beautiful Nutcracker!

by Pia112 on 12/23/15Tilles Center Concert Hall - BrookvilleRating: 5 out of 5

My daughters love the Nutcracker story. We checked for tickets at the NYC ballet and could not afford, thus looked into other venues and we were lucky enough to find The Nutcracker by the Eglevsky ballet. What a wonderful performance! We loved it! Stage, customs, choreography, performance... Just wonderful! Will attend it again next 2016 holiday season

The show was great and seeing the expressions of my 7 years old daughter was priceless! We live in SI and wouldn't go anywhere else bcz this theater is beautiful and the Nutcracker was nicely played . I loved the custums and choreography was just great! The best for me was the high performance of the ballerina and her partner.

  • A Nutcracker for the family

by TeddyFamily4 on 12/23/15Westchester County Center - White PlainsRating: 3 out of 5

Lovely sets particularly the snowy forest with the beautiful swans, and excellent dancing performed with energy and passion. A couple of things made our afternoon less then perfect and they were as follows: 1.There was no live orchestra, though the taped music did work well overall. 2. We sat close to a hyper 5 year old girl who was tantruming and shifting around constantly during the show, annoying audience members in her immediate vicinity. This show is an good introduction for young kids to the Nutcracker ballet and dance in general, it is excellent value for the money. Kudos to the wonderful dance troupe.

  • Ballet for kids

by nomadwolf59 on 12/23/15Tilles Center Concert Hall - BrookvilleRating: 4 out of 5

This is a great introduction to ballet for children who take ballet or any dance class. It's not live music and the stage isn't huge but it's a darn good way to see a classic and not pay for something that isn't essential for a 8 year to 11 year old.

  • Good Show

by StefanC on 12/22/15Royce Hall - UCLA - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

This was a good show with talented dancers. I was expecting a little more. The ensemble dances were not synchronized but the partner dances were on point. The price was on the high side considering it did not have a live orchestra. I would still recommend it to a friend.

  • Outstanding performance

by Carolyngk on 12/22/15Westchester County Center - White PlainsRating: 5 out of 5

The nutcracker was fantastic. I have seen it done in several theaters even in NYC and this was comparable. The dancers were very professional the show was outstanding. Even my toddler was mesmerized.

The whole cast of The Nutcracker did a really amazing job. The choreography, the grace and posture of the dancers and most especially the costume (wardrobe) of all the dancers. Not to mention the production design is truly eye-catching! Bravo!! Two thumbs up!!!

  • Simply Stunning

As always, Ballet Idaho has done a marvelous job with their interpretation of this classic. Each time I've seen it there was a slightly different interpretation. I enjoyed it immensely and brought my 86 year old mother-in-law who had never seen a Ballet Idaho performance of any kind. She wants to come again next year. Bravo.
