About

The Lonely Island on Tour

Though The Lonely Island exploded into pop culture in 2005, it took the music and comedy trio 14 years — plus seven Saturday Night Live seasons, three uproarious LPs, and two movies — to get around to touring. Chalk that up to the successful careers of actor-writer-producers Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone, who have as a group been nominated for multiple Grammys, an Oscar, and a Creative Arts Emmy (which they won).

They earned all that by writing and performing such absurd yet undeniable rap anthems as "Dick in a Box" (featuring Justin Timberlake), "Lazy Sunday" (about going to see a Chronicles of Narnia movie), and "I Just Had Sex," in which autotune hook-master Akon coos those titular words with believable enthusiasm.

That they hadn't previously taken that act on the road is equally silly when you consider their talent and chemistry, honed over decades of friendship and collaborative work, not to mention their love of performance, props, ridiculous outfits, and surprising guest cameos. To wit, a 2018 warm-up show featured Michael Bolton in a pirate hat, singing along to "Jack Sparrow."

The Lonely Island Background

Friends since their junior high days in Berkeley, California, the three men who make up The Lonely Island moved into a cheap Los Angeles apartment in 2000 with plans to work in film. Between dead-end gigs, they managed to become pioneers in sharing comedic video shorts online and stumbled upon their true gift while recording joke rap songs with their musician roommate after-hours.

In 2005, the guys parlayed budding Internet stardom into a writing gig for the MTV Movie Awards and, as a result, a role on SNL where they'd head up their own Digital Shorts department.

Their run on the show was legendary, expanding SNL's reach into both viral clips and radio hits, while The Lonely Island created a series of star-studded music videos and LPs — from 2009's Incredibad (featuring T-Pain, Natalie Portman, and Jack Black, among others), to 2011's Turtleneck & Chain (Nicki Minaj, Snoop Dogg, Lady Gaga), to 2013's The Wack Album (Pharrell Williams, Kendrick Lamar, Hugh Jackman). The Lonely Island also eventually made it to Hollywood with 2016's Judd Apatow–produced mockumentary Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, which poked fun at the music industry they unwittingly found themselves within.

    Never Stop Never Stopping

by C. Jenn on 6/27/19Rockland Trust Bank Pavilion - Boston

The Lonely Island put on a fantastic performance for their first ever tour. They sounded great live, and definitely knew how to keep their guests laughing! There was a great selection of songs, and it wasn't super over done. I liked the replacements they used for some of their guest performers and they threw in a new song or two so that was awesome. I would definitely recommend seeing them if you get the chance! I drove 6 hours to get to Boston for this concert and I don't regret it at all!

by Marandom on 6/27/19Rockland Trust Bank Pavilion - Boston

Was not disappointed. Wish the gaggle of drunk chicks that "loved them so much" would have shut up and enjoyed the show..... BUT The boys were amazing. Highly recommended seeing.

Simply Amazing. They covered ever era of their career. The video presentation was great it even included the lyrics so if you did not know the song it was easy to sing along. I hope they continue to tour, but who knows if they will. So glad I was able to see them.

    Great show, but too short.

by Adam on 6/26/19Kings Theatre - Brooklyn

Let's start by saying that this show was pretty amazing, that said, let's nitpick. The start time was listed at 8 p.m. Nothing got started until almost 8:30 p.m. Mike Birbiglia came out and did about 20 minutes, which was nice surprise. He's a good comedian. Then we just sat there for another 20 - 25 minutes. Once The Lonely Island actually took the stage, it was a fantastic experience. Not one single person was sitting for the duration of the show. Unfortunately, that was at 10 p.m.The show was spectacular, but I personally ended up feeling a little short changed, the tickets were an anniversary gift to my wife, and I expected the show to be a little longer. Once it ended, a bunch of fans went around to the rear of the theatre in the hopes that the group would come out and sign some autographs. About 20 people waited for a couple of hours and eventually, we saw Andy Samberg exit the building. Everyone cheered, but he just got in the car. I personally, didn't see Jorma, and Akiva came out and waved to the crowd. He looked like he was going to come over and at least say hi, but I guess he thought better of it. This was kind of a bummer, and some people from the group were pretty upset, but this shouldn't take away from how entertaining the show actually was.

They are as funny and entertaining as expected! It was only an hour long, would have loved it to be longer.

    Unbelievable show

    by K. C. on 6/25/19The Met Philadelphia - Philadelphia

I could not believe that the Lonely Island was going on tour and they completely lived up to the hype I set up in my head!!! Usually by the end of a show, I'm ready to leave and I was so upset when they left the stage - I couldn't believe how fast it went by!!!

    Lonely Island concerts are amazing!

    by J. R. on 6/25/19Kings Theatre - Brooklyn

This concert was SO fun. Apart from the songs, there was stand-up sketches, little bits that I wouldn't really classify as either of those. It was WONDERFUL. My friend who isn't that big of a fan had such a fun time too.

    Great Performance

by StyleBoy4LifeNY on 6/24/19The Rooftop at Pier 17 - New York

The performance was awesome and memorable. My only critique would be if they could have added some songs to the set list like Equal Rights, HUGS, Go Kindergarten, Oakland Nights, Natalie's Rap 2.0, IHOP, F*#k Off, Incredibad & Spring Break. I would have left Rasta Trent & Reba off, but I understand why some of the songs I mentioned were omitted. Regardless, the 20 plus tracks they performed were on point. Highlights were Finest Girl, Jose & Mark, Jorma's NY Giants performance, Lazy Sunday, The Golden Rule & Like A Boss. The Lonely Island is the greatest. Hope to see you back in NYC soon. Guys really know how to put on a show!

by Kuriko on 6/24/19The Rooftop at Pier 17 - New York

Best show I think I've ever been too. It was the perfect combination of our favorite hits and their iconic comedy. Special guests blew me away each time and it genuinely looked like everyine was enjoying every second of being on stage. Also the venue was perfect, great sound and it was very intimate which made it an even greater experience. I'll definitely be going if they decide to tour again.
