About

THE LAST SHIP is a new musical with an original score by 16-time Grammy Award® winner Sting. Inspired by Sting’s own childhood experiences, this World Premiere production features direction by two-time Tony Award® winner Joe Mantello (Wicked), a book by Tony Award® winner John Logan(Red) and Pulitzer Prize winner Brian Yorkey (Next to Normal), and choreography by Olivier Award winner Steven Hoggett (Once). THE LAST SHIP is set in the English seafaring town of Wallsend, a close-knit community where life has always revolved around the local shipyard and the hardworking men who construct magnificent vessels with tremendous pride. It is a portrait of a community so bound together by passion, faith and tradition, they'll stop at nothing to preserve the only life they've ever known.

    The Last Ship

by TeresaMariaCoico on 1/27/15Neil Simon theatre - NYC

I was lucky enough to be able to see the Last Ship 12 times, both shows yesterday, and would have seen it alot more had it stayed open. Stings speech Saturday night was very heartfelt and you could see how much this show meant to him and that it was his baby. I adored this show and it was my favorite new musical of the season!! Sting wrote an absolutely gorgeous haunting score!! It is such a shame that it didn't resonate with audiences, that they couldn't appreciate something new and fresh. It seems like Broadway audiences only want the familiar, meaning something from Disney or a show that was a movie as quite a few of the new shows coming in will attest. The cast was absoluting riveting and amazing, night after night. Rachel Tucker, Michael Esper, Fred Applegate, Collin Kelly-Sordelet, Aaron Lazer and of course Sting himself, and Jimmy Nails before him, were all extraordinary. I was especially mesmerized by Michael Esper. He gave a beautifully poignant performance night after night. He was breathtaking and it was a joy to see him in this show. I cried thru quite a bit of it. I hope when Tony time comes around that he is remembered as well as the others in the cast and Sting himself. If Sting doesn't win the Tony for this show that will really be a miscarriage of justice. I applaud them all and will miss this show so much!!

    A Masterpiece

by Indianna on 1/27/15Neil Simon Theatre - New York

The Last Ship was one of the musicals shows I have ever seen. A beautiful story with a stunning score. The cast was outstanding. It was so deeply moving with a score that gets under your skin and touches you at your core. It gets even better when you listen to the CD and pay attention to the poetic lyrics. The acting is sensational. Michael Esper's performance is heart breaking. Rachel Tucker is fierce. Fred Applegate is played with such ease and understated perfection. One of the greatests highlights was the young actor, Collin Kelly-Sordelet making his Broadway debut. He is charming, sincere, sings like an angel and moves like a gazelle. The ensemble is committed and engaging. This show is WAY underrated. It is original, unique and bold. We finally have someone taking real risks. It is deserving of a best Score Tony, as well as several of the actors getting recognized as well.

    Tremendous Theater Experience

by ClassicalGuitarplayer on 1/27/15Neil Simon Theatre - New York

One of the best shows I've seen on Broadway. I teared and choked up during a couple of scenes. What a shame it had to close, but the touring cast should bring this fabulous show to nationwide audiences with raves of appreciation.

    The Last Ship was captivating

by Armydoc4 on 1/27/15Neil Simon Theatre - New York

This play deserved to have a long run on Broadway. Although not the most amazing B-Way play, The cast is exceptional, the story is compelling and the music is authentic. Great performances by Michael Esper, Rachel Tucker, and especially Fred Applegate.

The story was very relevant. Jobs going away to cheaper overseas. Moving love story. Gideon and Meg were unbelievably amazing. Sting was a bonus.! I would have loved it anyway but he was the icing on the cake. The music was really fantastic

Too Bad It Closed, The Last Ship a great time

by Eliz59 on 1/26/15Neil Simon Theatre - New York

This is a musical/drama about ordinary, working people in a small Northeast English town and how they cope with the closing of the main source of income for the community. Sting's music, both new for the show and old stand bys that fit into the story seamlessly, enhanced the story and the experience.

The Last Ship, A Shame it Was The Last

by Noodle98 on 1/26/15Neil Simon Theatre - New York

I loved this show!! It had multiple story lines, with emotional pull and, of course, great music. Added bonus that Sting joined the cast for a month! I don't understand why it has not done as well as I think it should have but I am SO glad that I went to see it. A labor of love for Sting that I believe lived up to expectations, for me at least.
