The Last Ship
by TeresaMariaCoico on 1/27/15Neil Simon theatre - NYCI was lucky enough to be able to see the Last Ship 12 times, both shows yesterday, and would have seen it alot more had it stayed open. Stings speech Saturday night was very heartfelt and you could see how much this show meant to him and that it was his baby. I adored this show and it was my favorite new musical of the season!! Sting wrote an absolutely gorgeous haunting score!! It is such a shame that it didn't resonate with audiences, that they couldn't appreciate something new and fresh. It seems like Broadway audiences only want the familiar, meaning something from Disney or a show that was a movie as quite a few of the new shows coming in will attest. The cast was absoluting riveting and amazing, night after night. Rachel Tucker, Michael Esper, Fred Applegate, Collin Kelly-Sordelet, Aaron Lazer and of course Sting himself, and Jimmy Nails before him, were all extraordinary. I was especially mesmerized by Michael Esper. He gave a beautifully poignant performance night after night. He was breathtaking and it was a joy to see him in this show. I cried thru quite a bit of it. I hope when Tony time comes around that he is remembered as well as the others in the cast and Sting himself. If Sting doesn't win the Tony for this show that will really be a miscarriage of justice. I applaud them all and will miss this show so much!!
