About

THE LAST SHIP is a new musical with an original score by 16-time Grammy Award® winner Sting. Inspired by Sting’s own childhood experiences, this World Premiere production features direction by two-time Tony Award® winner Joe Mantello (Wicked), a book by Tony Award® winner John Logan(Red) and Pulitzer Prize winner Brian Yorkey (Next to Normal), and choreography by Olivier Award winner Steven Hoggett (Once). THE LAST SHIP is set in the English seafaring town of Wallsend, a close-knit community where life has always revolved around the local shipyard and the hardworking men who construct magnificent vessels with tremendous pride. It is a portrait of a community so bound together by passion, faith and tradition, they'll stop at nothing to preserve the only life they've ever known.

    Sting at his best!

by Hrb555 on 10/28/14Neil Simon Theatre - New York

If you have a modest amount of Sting's past music in your memory bank, this show's music is immediately recognizable as Sting's. The melodic lines, phrasings and tempos are unmistakably Sting. The lead actors have beautiful voices and a stage presence that is mesmerizing. I, personally, am not a particular fan of Broadway musicals; this show, however, was fabulously entertaining and enjoyable. I wholeheartedly recommend it.

The best new Musical on Broadway!

by Number1Mouse on 10/28/14Neil Simon Theatre - New York

This story is well told through the wonderful music written by Sting. The cast is really well in tune with this dramatic tale that takes place in a Ship building town in England in the 80's. I would recommend you get tickets now before the Tony's because this is going to be a hit.

The Last Ship was a Broadway musical just like I remember years ago...simple, non controversial, beautiful music, great set, good choreography, etc. It's a feel good show. You'll leave with a smile!

A Great Experience in the Theater

by Anonymous on 10/28/14Neil Simon Theatre - New York

The Last Ship presented a gripping combination of community determination to overcome adverse changes in the economic environment and and sensititve exporation of basic human relationships--man and woman, father and son etc. The music and lyrics by Sting were wonderful. The choreography was exciting.

    Mixed but worth it

by ShellNell on 10/28/14Neil Simon Theatre - New York

Most of the music was great (for me, the exception was Arthur's long dirge-like song; way too tedious). The cast was great. The choreography was lively, energetic, and authentic-feeling--very well done. The stagecraft was amazing. The problem is the book: the premise is waffly, and, more problematical than that, the main character (Gideon) is someone the audience doesn't know enough to root for. Big problem there. I think this is fixable but it is a little late now!

My wife and I attended The Last Ship preview last Saturday before it opened on Sunday. It was our twentieth wedding anniversary and what a gift we received. This is the best show that we have seen in our 20 years of marriage. We are bring our children back to NYC to see it again over Christmas break.
